  • Making Phone Calls in Puerto Vallarta

    Smooth Operator

    Things just got easier for making phone calls in Puerto Vallarta. Taking effect in August of this year, dialing all numbers will be a lot more efficient. This is one of the most often asked questions we have from visitors and new residents in Puerto Vallarta, with a lot of frustrated comments about how to call a restaurant in Mexico City, a connection in the US or Canada, and simple calls, from land line to cellular and vice versa.

    According to the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT), all calls will be made in the future with the use of ten digits and a whole lot less confusion. It’s been a long time coming, with a plan that was initiated nearly two years ago. Phasing out 01 for all national long distance calls, 044 for calls made to cellular numbers and 045 for long distance from land line to cellular will be cause for celebration for people who have made contact only after much trial and error. In some cases, whether in Puerto Vallarta on elsewhere, it’s been easier to simply send an email but there times that only a phone connection will do.

    Part of what takes so long to get the system up and running is allowing time for service providers to make all the necessary changes on networks, websites, etc. We personally will also need to make changes in our own telephones for contacts we have on autodial. If it’s time consuming for us, imagine what it’s like when literally thousands of adjustments need to be made at much higher levels.

    The icing on the cake is calls made to Puerto Vallarta and all of Mexico will no longer require dialing the pesky extra number 1 when calling a cellular number. All phone numbers will be re-created equal…ten digits for everyone; land lines and cellular. As with the rest of the globe, Mexico will retain their country code, which is 52, so calling into the country will still require 12 digits.

    It’s important to keep in mind that some operations won’t change, for example 911 for local emergencies in Puerto Vallarta. This number is applied for all of Mexico.

    According to the IFT, these changes will officially take place on August 3rd, 2019. We can check with Telmex, Telcel and other carriers to make sure this expectation is met.

    The Underground Railroad to Mexico

    Slavery of Africans is a uniquely American story in many ways and without exception; there are intriguing tales of escape to accompany this tragic stretch of history. Mexico, now a place known for sunny vacations, was a desired safe harbor for many slaves escaping from far reaches of the United States. Texas was still a part of Mexico when the Mexican government abolished slavery in 1829. Once the Republic of Texas was formed in 1836, separate from Mexico, slavery was made legal again, which stayed consistent beyond the time Texas joined the Union in 1945.

    Canada was the destination for many slaves who struck out for chilly northern parts, often thwarted, sent back in miserable conditions, or to save time and money, executed by lynching or other means. Those were destinies facing slaves who attempted escape to the south, as well, but there was very safe refuge in Mexico. There is strong evidence of tejanos (Mexicans in Texas) being the conductors of this southern route of the Underground Railroad. Many historical accounts have been recorded of brave people who were of great assistance to escapees.

    Matilda Hicks, herself a former slave, married Nathaniel Jackson, the son of the owner of the plantation of which Matilda was kept. As a family, Matilda and Nathaniel were known to have moved from Alabama and settled near the Rio Grande in Texas, where they helped people cross the border. There’s also evidence of a black woman and two white men who worked diligently to find homes for these southern bound refugees. A famous slave of Sam Houston, who was at the time president of the Republic of Texas, escaped to Mexico and joined the Mexican military to fight against Houston. Tom, as this slave was known, was one of the few escaped slaves where records exist of his journey, whereas few accounts were ever written down. Due to the high risk of being caught, sent back, or killed, secrecy was the order of the times. Studies verify support of slaves coming to Mexico not only from Texas, but also North Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama.

    It’s clear that anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 people were freed from bondage by taking the route to Mexico; due to the lack of written statistics, the true figure is likely much higher. It is certainly an indication how censuses can result in incorrect statistics.

    When the Fugitive Slave Act of 1950 was enacted to return slaves from northern states to their owners, the U.S. wanted Mexico to sign a similar treaty. Mexico, with their insistence that enslaved people were free once they crossed the border, refused to agree or sign any such document.

  • Vallarta: The Blue Footed Booby

    The Blue-Footed Booby: Did you know Puerto Vallarta is one of the few places in the world you can see the Blue-footed booby? Half of all Blue-footed boobies are found in the Galápagos Islands. The remainder is scattered along the Pacific Ocean coastline from Mexico to Peru, and Blue Footed Boobies seem to be very selective about their habitats. A midsize water bird, males are slightly smaller than females, both weighing from 3 to 5 pounds. Males are distinguishable by their bright blue feet, which figure largely in mating rituals. The male Blue-footed booby does a dance of sorts to attract his mate, lifting his feet as high as possible. The females are attracted to the density and brightness of color and the male Blue-footed booby’s personal choreography, which can be quite comical.

    Besides the males’ blue feet, another trait that distinguishes the booby is their egg laying practice, which causes a lot of sibling rivalry in the nest, cause for great study. Not all eggs are laid at once, which results in different sized hatchlings, who all vie for the same meals and attention. This asynchronous hatching, which differs from other species whose incubation period doesn’t begin until all eggs have been laid, keeps male and female blue-footed busy and easy for bird watchers to spy on.

    To see the Blue-footed booby in Puerto Vallarta, we suggest taking a panga (open skiff boat) from one of the small ports such as Mismaloya, Punta de Mita, or Sayulita. The rock formation Los Arcos in the south end of the bay is a sure spot for sighting these funny birds or for a longer trip, the Marieta Islands. You can snorkel there, too. Beautiful fish species abound in these waters; angel fish, clownfish (Nemo) and yellow tangs.

    Visitors to Puerto Vallarta often ask how the Blue-footed booby got his name. The feet are a dead giveaway, but what about the booby part, which makes children and some affable adults laugh. The Spanish word bobo means clumsy, foolish, silly. Unrelated to the color of the bird’s feet, but still associated with these vibrant appendages, the name sticks because of the difficulty the booby finds when walking on solid ground. Imagine being an awkward dancer and being forced to find a romantic match by overcoming this disadvantage. We could learn much from the Blue-footed booby.

    This bird is an amazing fisher with its long pointed beak and deep diving skills and is able to feed their hungry children with great skill and proficiency.

  • Cruising the Water in Puerto Vallarta

    Cruising the Water in Puerto Vallarta: There are many options for sailing and boating in Puerto Vallarta with a lot to see and do. You might choose a small panga (open skiff) or a large luxury motor or sailboat, decide to go fishing or snorkeling, see a sunset, visit the Marieta Islands, go on an eco-tour?the choices are abundant. We have a couple recommendations but online searches are the best way to go.
    In the winter you?re bound to see whale, dolphin and manta ray, all thrilling for those who primarily live on the land. If you?re lucky enough to catch a fish, there are restaurants where you can have your quarry cooked along with selections of vegetables and rice; a great memory-maker for all ages.

    Several tours leave from the Puerto Vallarta Marina, a location you can reach easily by bus, taxi or private car. Customize your trip by telling your captain what your preferences are; he?ll have suggestions, too. Depending on your initial direction, you?ll usually head south and have a views of the shoreline, Malec¢n, and Romantic Zone. Destinations will depend on how much time you want to spend on the water and this is a good time to throw the rods out to see if you can snag your lunch. Yelapa is the furthest most but there are stops at Quimixto and Las Animas, too. These small villages are reached only by boat, though we no longer consider them remote. If you?re offered the chance to visit a secluded beach, be aware that several other tourists have also been enticed by the suggestion of seclusion; it?s often very busy.
    Most of these trips are suitable for children and there are some wonderful places to drop anchor for swimming in shallow water. Los Arcos, where the big rocks jut out of the water to the south of Puerto Vallarta, is a great place for snorkeling and all passengers are provided with life vests and equipment.

    Arrive early; we recommend starting at 9 a.m. If the heat of the day becomes a problem you can always head back or you may want to make it an all day event. Have cash ready for extra expenses. You may want to buy souvenirs, t-shirts, pie from the pie-lady. Don?t forget to tip; we suggest 15% of your total cost for the day. You will be responsible for your own food at these locations but your boat will offer drinks and water, and often snacks.

    A Five Star trip can be had with La Vida Bella Boat Tours for as little as $50 per person for a three hour tour. You can always extend your trip; check with the captain to make sure he doesn?t have an afternoon trip booked.
    Gay cruises are popular and we recommend Diana?s. She has been offering gay and lesbian cruises in Puerto Vallarta for 20 years and sells out in advance. Book online. For $110 USD, you get continental breakfast, snacks, unlimited drinks (though we also advise sensible limitations), and your lunch is included on shore with a beverage. You?ll be able to snorkel, feed the fish and swim. This trip leaves the pier at Los Muertos Beach at 9 a.m.

  • Getting to Know the Jungle Around Puerto Vallarta

    Every outing we have ever gone on with botanist Miguel Cházaro has been an adventure. One day our friend took us to visit a cloud forest of maple trees and giant ferns, not far from Talpa, Jalisco. The next morning we had planned to return to Guadalajara, but Cházaro said, “There’s a botanical garden near here you really must see. It was started by an American and it’s unique.”

     

    Well, “near here” took six hours to get to plus six hours back  and we ended up reaching home at midnight. But I must admit the eminent botanist was right: the Vallarta Botanical Gardens are a must-see, no matter where you find yourself in Mexico. The place is located 24 kilometers south of Puerto Vallarta, right on Palms-to-Pines coastal highway 200.

     

    Step out of your car and you’re in the jungle. We were visiting in July and everywhere we went, hundreds of “skippers” fluttered all around us. These, explained a sign in English and Spanish, are Hisperiidae butterflies, smaller than most and given to skipping, flitting, darting and zig-zagging, from which they get their popular name. Clouds of them danced all around us as we began our tour of the Botanical Gardens, which cover an area of eight hectares, criss-crossed by pathways with exotic names like The Vanilla Trail, Jaguar Trail and Guacamaya Trail, leading to even more exotic-sounding places like The Jungle Overlook, The Swinging Bridge, Tree Fern Grotto, The Garden of Memories and The Giant Strangler Fig Tree.

    And everywhere you go, every step of the way, there is lush vegetation: sensuous tropical flowers, bizarre, creeping vines and gargantuan trees which soar to amazing heights in this tropical climate. Here you will find orchids—an amazing multitude of orchids. There are even orchids that resemble anything but orchids, plus a few that (to our great surprise) exude alluring perfumes. And of course, there was the tastiest of all orchids, Vanilla planifolia, whose vines grow abundantly there (and you can buy the beans or extract in their store).

    Here, too, are cocoa pods growing before your very eyes and attached directly to the tree trunk. Each pod holds 20 to sixty seeds, the main ingredient in chocolate. There are also rare cacti of every sort, exotic Nymphaea ‘islamorada (“Purple Island” waterlilies), Red Ginger, once exclusively reserved for Hawaiian royalty and such a huge collection of anthuriums that we wondered whether they had found all 1901 types. Along that line, the gardens have so many thousands of species that no one has even tried to count them.

    All of this is thanks to Robert Price, founder of this marvelous project, who kindly took out time to chat with me at the gardens’ Hacienda de Oro Restaurant over frosty glasses of incredibly refreshing and delicious drinks. One of these contained chaya and chía, while the other was a combination of iced lemon-grass tea, tapioca and ginger, sweetened with agave nectar. “Some of our visitors suspect we have spiked these two drinks with frog’s eggs,” quipped the curator of these gardens.

    Robert Price, who was born in Savannah, Georgia, told me he came to Puerto Vallarta in 2004, planning to stay for only six months. Fortunately for us and for Mexico, someone knocked on Price’s door one day, selling orchids. “Those orchids were absolutely incredible, gorgeous, says Price, and I asked the man where he had found them. ‘In the mountains,’ he told me…and eventually he brought me to this very place. I took one look and said to myself, ‘This is where I want to stay!’ ”

    Now all Price needed to do was to figure out how to make a living in the middle of a jungle. “Well,” he says, “I noticed there were no botanical gardens along the coast and that seemed surprising to me. But I love nature and the idea of starting my own botanical garden came into my head. So I researched the internet to find out how to do it. And this is the result. I think this is what I was sent here to do.”

    Price’s enthusiasm may be infectious. For one thing, he has managed to convince the citizens of Puerto Vallarta to beautify the place by turning it into “The City of Bougainvilleas” and at present over 300 of these flowers have been planted by the PV Garden Club toward that end. In addition to that, it seems the gardens he created in the coastal mountains south of Puerto Vallarta have inspired a much larger and truly ambitious project called The Banderas Bay Initiative, which aims at preserving and protecting the biodiversity of 10,000 square kilometers of ocean, jungle and mountains, stretching from 2000 meters below sea level in Banderas Bay to 2260 meters above sea level at the peak of Ceboruco Volcano. This huge project is being run by Price’s friend, entomologist Rick Main and Dr. Max Greig, Rector of the UDG Coastal University.

    According to Main, the Banderas Bay Initiative has, in turn, inspired an even greater challenge and—in my opinion a truly Herculean task: the cleanup of the watersheds that pollute Lake Chapala and the Santiago River.

    All of this demonstrates that a little idea can go a long way, and Bob Price’s dream may ultimately reach far beyond the boundaries of his botanical sanctuary. After all, says Price, “Gardens are a Civilizing Force and are perceived as places of culture.”

     

    The Vallarta Botanical Gardens website is vbgardens.org and the phone number is (322) 223-6182. It’s open daily from December to April but closed on Mondays between May and November and the entrance fee is only 60 pesos.

    Vallarta Botanical Gardens is a non-profit organization “dedicated to those who work to preserve the beauty of the Earth, and who labor to teach others the value and wonder of their environment.”

    This is for the gents who want to experience luxury and pampering for a very small price. For less than $10 USD, you can get a hot towel, traditional facial shave in Puerto Vallarta. It’s an experience that might change your attitude about indulgence.

    Why get a hot towel shave in Puerto Vallarta? Primarily, as far as we’re concerned, it’s about relaxation and doing something for you! A shave at home in the morning usually takes about three to five minutes, depending on trimming of beards and moustaches. Nicks are common, blades are often dulled from use and after-shave tenderness is normal. Using inferior products, soaps, and aftershave is just not smart. It’s your face; the only one you have. Give it some love. We recommend at least once a week.

    When you get a hot towel shave in Puerto Vallarta, the beard is softened, you get a closer shave and the pores open up, leaving less irritation.

    Some shops in Puerto Vallarta use traditional straight razors, while others use safety razors, with disposable blades. These edges are extremely sharp, making it possible to get very close. Disposable razors, the kind you usually have when traveling, are lightweight and the quality of the blade is lacking. A straight razor shave is going to be much closer, and make you face feel like a newborn baby; it will be smooth and last longer.

    Barbers sanitize hair clippers, scissors, blades and other tools, which is something we don’t do at home. Bacteria can occur on the skin at anytime and even the smallest abrasion can cause an infection, which explains some of the skin eruptions you get when you do quick shaves at home.

    Barbers in Puerto Vallarta are known for their great hairstyling; the cost of a shave and haircut is usually in the vicinity of $15 USD. These artists are great at styling moustaches, beards, and for a small added cost will clean up those bushy eyebrows, too.

    Walking down the streets of anywhere in Puerto Vallarta… Old Town, El Centro, Pitillal, or at one of the modern malls, you’re sure to find excellent barbershops, both modern and very traditional.

    You’ll find that barbershops in Puerto Vallarta offer complimentary cold beer or full bar. Nothing like a gin and tonic to go with your shave and haircut!

    Puerto Bazar at Biblioteca Los Mangos

    In an old mango orchard in Puerto Vallarta, on Avenida Francisco Villa a dream came true when the library was built with the help of community support. Opened in November of 1996 and host to guests of many countries, there are books in English, Spanish and other languages. Audio and visual services are also available. Free to the public and those who live in Puerto Vallarta (even short-timers) can get a library card. Your passport and a copy of a utility bill is all you need.

    We pass along our used books to the library once we find we have a bit of a pile, and they always receive them with gratefulness and a big smile. If you have books gathering dust and at risk of mildew, get them to the biblioteca, where they will lovingly lend and take care of them. They accept books in all languages.

    You’ll find other things happening in and around this rustic building. Ballet classes, piano, yoga, sculpture and painting classes; all very affordable. Cultural activities, art shows and community events take place inside and out on the expansive lawn.

    This weekend, March 16th and 17th, you won’t want to miss the Third Annual Puerto Bazar at Biblioteca Los Mangos! Here is a chance to get some Mexican coolture. There will be entrepreneurs from Puerto Vallarta and surrounding areas, showing off art, design, music, dance and a diversity of many talents. Some contributors will include Sandy Ideas; Peekabow Mx; Je Suis; JUST-Alma PV; Little Maravillas; Sunflower Beuaty Care; Hilo & el Mar; ZARU Catering & Eventos, plus many more.

    Entrance is free, with a selection of delicious food and drinks for sale. There will be family workshops, continual shows throughout the day, and something for everyone. It’s a relaxing place to be on the weekend, away from the crowds and hubbub. You can bring dogs, too, but please keep them on leash.

    The Library is located at Avenida Francisco Villa 1000, Colonia Los Mangos. Busses, taxis and Uber will all know this destination, just south of Costco.

    Normal open hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 9 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 6 pm. Closed Sundays.

    Meet You at the Movies

    Puerto Vallarta has always been big on movies, for locals, expats and tourists alike. From the old Bahia in the middle of town (now sadly gone), to the huge multiplexes in the malls, there has never been a shortage of places to catch up on a film. We’ve had a couple of fabulous film festivals over the years, with both English and Spanish language, and an occasional nod to the French. Democrats Abroad have been putting on their own series for eleven years to date, and they are excited to start a new season for 2019 – 20.

    Incanto, the charming cabaret in Puerto Vallarta at Calle Insurgentes 109, right next to the Rio Cuale, will be hosting the Democrats Abroad’s movies this year. With a 3:00 pm film time on Wednesdays, there should be no conflicts with evening events. This time slot also gives patrons a chance to dine before or after. Big pluses are the bar service at Incanto, serving beer, wine and mixed drinks to movie-goers, as well as their nice comfy seating.

    The list of films is very appealing, starting on December 4th with White Crow, the story of the incredible Russian ballet dancer, Rudolf Nureyev and his daring defection to the United States. Following through the season you won’t want to miss Boy Erased, Apollo 11, they Shall Not Grow Old, Divide and Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes, The Wife, Echo in the Canyon, If Beale Street Could Talk, The River and the Wall, Cold War, Free Solo, On the Basis of Sex, The Biggest Little Farm, and tying up with major hit dramedy, The Farewell.

    The above list is a very diverse selection of great films that have been released in the past year; nothing stale here. The variety runs everything from deep drama to hilarious comedy, some claiming both of these attributes in the same movie, hence the moniker dramedy. There’s politics, documentary, fiction and non, religion, literature, adventure, war, environmental, music, several Academy Award winners and many fine actors.

    For a quiet relaxing afternoon in Puerto Vallarta, away from the beach, tourists, and heat, make your way to Incanto on Wednesday afternoons. Tickets are available at the box office at Incanto. For 100 pesos, you can’t beat the price.

  • Puerto Vallarta Inspired Living News: Christmas

    Christmas Starts Early in Puerto Vallarta

    The first twelve days of December in Puerto Vallarta are busy with streets filled with people walking long distance pilgrimages to the church in the center of the city. These walks, sometimes done barefoot, are called peregrinations, which comes from the Latin peregrinari, meaning to travel abroad, invariably with no other mode of transportation than walking. They do so to honor the Virgin, Our Lady of Guadalupe, in which peregrination defines their sojourn.

    The Días de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe bring parades and fiestas, with the main grand celebration taking place on December 12th, with no shortage of music, food, drink, and merriment in the streets of Puerto Vallarta.

    In 1943, Reverend Don Parra Castillo took over the vicarship in Puerto Vallarta. Reverend Parra Castillo was responsible for many church associated actions, including the construction of the cathedral, surrounding walls and plazas. Reverend Parra installed a dedicated generator for continual electric power to the church; assigned the sculptures for the Stations of the Cross, carved by a renowned Mexico City artist, Jesús Ramirez; restored the fading painting of the Lady of Guadalupe, which he then had properly blessed; added the christening chapel; and remodeled the parish offices, among many other accomplishments. His major undertaking was the famous church tower and clock, to which the elaborate crown was added later. Reverend Parra began annual peregrinations, pulling the community together to contribute to the less fortunate.

    There are few organizations in Puerto Vallarta who do not participate in these holidays. Hotels, supermarkets, schools, hospitals, and every fraternal group get involved. These moving displays depict the famous meeting of the peasant Juan Diego and the appearance of the virgin. Those who join the peregrinations arrive at the top of the cathedral steps and, if able, humbly finish the journey on their knees to travel the remaining few meters to the altar.

    From the first day of December until the 12th, pilgrimages fill the streets, observed by tens of thousands who come to join in the festivities and make their own personal peregrination. Amazing amounts of food and gifts are offered by those who march, often carrying heavily laden baskets. Truckloads and carts with fruits, vegetables, grains and assorted groceries and household goods are unloaded each day and distributed throughout the community.

    This tradition is a marvelous event, even if only viewing from a convenient balcony or on the sidelines from the sidewalk. The pageantry and ceremony are wonderful presentations of how Christmas is celebrated in Puerto Vallarta.
