  • Puerto Vallarta – Mexico Takes Hollywood by Storm

    Mexico Takes Hollywood

    As we watched from our cozy home in Puerto Vallarta, it was a thrill to see this year’s Academy Awards from Los Angeles, California, where several Oscars were handed out to Mexicans! Alfonso Cuarón accepted the honor for Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Foreign Film for his film Roma!

    Congratulations are also in order for Spider-Man: A New Universe for walking away with the best Animated Film, of which twenty-four Mexicans participated in the development. Mexico has been endowed with some of the finest people to develop, produce, direct and star in award-winning movies.

    Diego Luna, who sported a pin of the flag of Mexico (and it was the day of Día de la Bandera – Day of the Flag in Mexico) on his lapel, spoke of how ignored he felt at his first Academy Awards ceremony, five years ago. No one was interested in interviewing him, or actor, Gael García Bernal. Luna, actor, director, producer, appeared in the Oscar winning film If Beale Street Could Talk, and this year he had a turnaround experience. He was delighted to hear Spanish being spoken everywhere on the Red Carpet, microphones thrust in his face, interviewers competing for his attention. This year the Academy Awards were presented with so much Spanish language, there were subtitles! Luna joined the famous Spanish chef José Andrés to present a clip from Roma and opened with a statement in Spanish about how we can now speak Spanish at the Oscars! The Spanish actor, Javier Bardem stated (in Spanish) “There are no borders, there are no walls, that can stop ingenuity and talent” referring to this global gathering, where many countries were represented.

    Adding to Bardem’s inspiration was Alfonso Cuarón’s quote from the famous French director, Claude Chabrol, when he spoke of New Wave, “there are no waves, there is only the ocean. I think that the nominees tonight have proven we are a part of the same ocean.”

    The wave is one of change; the past few years Mexico has dominated the category of Best Director; not just Alfonso Cuarón on the Red Carpet, but also Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water) and Alejandro Iñárritu (The Revenant and Birdman). A veritable explosion of Mexican talent!

    Seeing Yalitza Aparcio, nominated for Best Actress, in the front row with her mother, both indigenous women of Mexico indicates how far we have come, validating Andrés’ statement of how film gives voice to the voiceless and moves humanity forward.

    The Puerto Vallarta International Film Festival (FICPV) will take place for twelve days in March. Puerto Vallarta will honor several films in a festival that draws talent from around the world. There will be forty films presented and the Golden Iguana will be awarded in several categories, international and nationally.   • Puerto Vallarta – Benito Juarez

    Benito Juárez

    Benito Juárez is a significant figure in Mexican history and we see his name in many places in Puerto Vallarta. There are streets named for him, an entire colonia (neighborhood), schools, businesses. Born on March 21, 1806, the birthday of Benito Juárez is celebrated every year in Mexico on the third Monday in March. Banks will be closed and many workers will have the day off.

    Benito Juárez is probably the most important representation of Mexican nationalism. He stands for resistance to foreign intervention. He is the premier model of a leader who would not allow meddling from outside his territory and will always be revered for this reason. We can only hope that Andrés Manuel López Obrador will follow the example of Benito Juárez.

    Benito Juárez came from very humble roots, a poor boy raised in the mountains of Oaxaca, born to Zapotec peasants who both died from natural causes when Benito was only three years old. Benito Juárez was raised by an uncle after his grandparents also died; he worked until he was twelve years old, picking corn and herding sheep. Though he could only speak the indigenous language of Zapotec, he took off on his own, walking to Oaxaca City to find his sister, who worked as a cook in the home of Antonio Maza, and was lucky at the time to be hired in the same household. Recognized for his intelligence and quest for knowledge, Benito was accepted to a seminary where he completed studies in record time. Too young to be ordained, he continued his schooling at the Oaxaca Institute of Sciences and Arts and graduated in 1834 with a degree in law. His destiny was political office and he was elected to the city council of Oaxaca in 1831 before he even finished school. In 1841, he was appointed as a civil judge.

    Benito Juárez maintained his position against the United States in the Mexican American War but when he could see it was lost, he refused to assist Santa Anna, which caused the exile of Juárez to New Orleans. With a resistance group, he was able to return to Mexico and eventually structured La Reforma, which after many struggles led to his being acknowledged as the President of Mexico in January 1858. He was later elected in 1867 and again in 1871. He thwarted the invasions of both Prussia and France and has fondly been compared to Abraham Lincoln.

    Benito Juárez will always be known for his position as a progressive reformer, who was committed to democracy; his opposition to the Catholic church and organized religion; and his objective for equal rights for the indigenous natives of Mexico.

    This year, the third Thursday of March falls on the 21st. Puerto Vallarta will have many celebrations on this day for the beloved Benito Juárez.

  • Puerto Vallarta Inspired Living News: Arriving In PV

    Airport Arrivals Just Got Better!

    Few things excite us as much as arriving in Puerto Vallarta. Coming in over the mountains from the north, with an approach toward the sea, where Lic. Gustavo Díaz International Airport has been receiving visitors since November 1954, when Mexicana Airlines landed their first plane in Puerto Vallarta. It’s always a thrill to land and feel the excitement in the air of both tourists and those returning home. Nearly thirty years after the first airplane landed here, we would make our first ascent into Puerto Vallarta, standing in the hot sun, waiting to check through immigration and enter the terminal to find our luggage. Over the years, as we’ve seen the airport expand and watched the many changes and expansions; Lic. Gustavo Díaz International Airport has become very similar to ports all over the world and has lost its back-to-nature charm. We are happy to have restrooms with flushing toilets and air conditioning but we do miss the old days, even if the inconveniences were annoying.

    Since those early days, coming through immigration has become a long and arduous process. Even though the lines move quickly, it seems there are more people in the queue every year. Some have trouble with the forms they’ve been given to fill out while still in flight; others can’t find their passport; many are confused about where to go and how the columns are expected to file through. Delighted to be in Puerto Vallarta, they are anxious for an icy cold beer or margarita.

    Exactly sixty-five years after that first landing in Puerto Vallarta, news has reached us that major improvements for entering the country are under way. There will be an increase of fourteen new customs officers, which is nearly double, during high volume times in December through the duration of high season. Music to our ears is commitment for the acquisition of new equipment for baggage inspection, similar to that used by TSA, higher tech and more efficient. We understand this is temporary until a review will be done to establish service standards, which will expedite arrivals moving through the customs area, as well. Current equipment is archaic compared to many airports of which tourists are departing from, and to where they will return.

    In the discovery that some arriving tourists stand in lines for hours, the Director of the General Customs Administration vowed to make things better by partnering with the government, business sector and airport administration. He is determined to see that moving people around and exercising expediency so that they can get to the beach, will be high on his priority list.

  • Puerto Vallarta – Charros & Such

    Charros

    Horses were not indigenous animals to the Americas. They were brought by the Spaniards and caused great shock and fear among the natives, who were confused by these centaur-looking creatures. Word spread quickly of the monsters, who were slaughtering villages; men, women, and children. The Europeans had a great advantage and Mexico never really recovered from the invasion. It took some time to realize there was a man sitting upon a four-legged, very fast, powerful beast. It is the opinion of many historians that these tactics by conquistadors created a subservient culture, intensifying a social order that remains today.

    It didn’t take a great deal of time for locals to adapt to horses. While the term vaquero applies to the working horseman, it is the charro who really shines in this role and culturally, there is definitely a difference. Charros have gone through different levels of respect and influence throughout the centuries. They began, like the working vaquero, as herders and errand runners but during the War of Independence in the early 1800’s, a charro was an esteemed soldier. After Independence was achieved in 1821, there was a division of marauders, and the respectable, law abiding charros. Bandits were often pitted against personal armies assembled by wealthy hacienda owners. Plateados, thieves who decorated themselves with stolen silver, set the charro fashions in motion and it wasn’t long before the civil Mexican cowboy was also decked out in colorful, rich costumes of their own making. Charros became the heroes of Mexico, as the government cracked down on outlaws by forming groups of militia, known as rurales, who brought law and order to the land. They wore a uniform of light grey with embroidery of silver, which remains popular today. The charro suit is completed with an impressive sombrero, tight fitting trousers for the men and elaborate full skirts for women, and a great deal of gorgeous embroidery on well tailored jackets.

    Today charros are celebrated with parades and competitions. The Campeonato Internacional Charro will be held in Puerto Vallarta from January 30 – February 3. This charreria (charro competition) will be held in El Colorado, which is about twenty minutes east of the airport.

    Public transportation is offered from Las Palmas. Take a blue city bus marked Las Palmas, and make sure it has Arena Vallarta posted in the window. You can save yourself the headache of parking and no risk getting lost.  The buses run from 10 am – 10 pm, daily during the competition. Don’t miss it!

  • 365 Fun Things to do in Puerto Vallarta – Go to the Zoo

    Puerto Vallarta ZooThe Puerto Vallarta Zoo is an experience completely different than going to the zoo in the United States or Canada.  In my opinion a visit is a must do fun thing.  The Puerto Vallarta zoo is located about thirty minutes from El Centro Vallarta by car or an easy forty five minute bus ride.  Located southshore across from Hotel Barcelo.  Once you arrive you can park and enjoy a walk to the front gates to begin your adventure or take a short detour and enjoy a relaxing horseback ride through the wilderness first.  When you get to the front gate of the zoo you will have the opportunity to buy snacks, water, etc. for your walk through the zoo.  The best part, you can buy snacks for the animals too.  If you choose you can buy a large bag of veggies and openly feed giraffes, monkeys, flamingos, and much, much more.  With the exception of a few animals where it would be unsafe, most animals in the Puerto Vallarta Zoo are in open cages and habitats.  Some even run free around the paths of the zoo like the peacocks.  Bring comfortable shoes so you can enjoy the hike throughout the entire zoo, it is quite large.

    With all the animals you can imagine, not only can you feed them, you can also play with some animals.  They often have baby tigers, lions, or jaguars.  As babies you can hold and feed them, when they are at least a couple of months old you can play with them and at about six months you can gently pet and take photos.  After about six months they will go into their habitat in the zoo and not have contact with guests.  The zoo in Puerto Vallarta is a great vacation experience or a must if you live here.  Enjoy!

  • Dental Work In Puerto Vallarta – Yes

    Now that we’ve determined it’s safe to go to Mexico, let’s discuss going there for what some might perceive a dreadful purpose. Many people (we won’t call them tourists, because touring is not really what they’re up to) come to Mexico from Canada and the Unites States for dental work. We’ve been delighted to hear stories that oppose the attitude of dread from our friends who’ve had extensive dental work done south of the border. Puerto Vallarta is an excellent destination for those seeking everything from teeth cleaning to implants.

    Though some opt for an entire mouth full of brand new teeth, taking as little time as a week, many visitors come for biannual visits and see a regular dentist, just as they would back in their hometown.

    We spoke with one patient who, after an estimate of over $50,000 in the US, decided to have a partial makeover for approximately $6,000. There’s a lot of appeal in paying a tenth of the price for virtually the same product. Toss an airfare on top of that and you can still afford to stay in a very nice hotel. If you do an online search from home, you will find companies who will arrange your trip, book your hotel and even plan side tours.

    Why is it so much cheaper to get dental work in Puerto Vallarta and other towns and cities in Mexico?

    The Mexican government subsidizes many dentists’ education so they aren’t burdened by a huge student loan debt to start out their career. Often if there’s a debt owed to the government by a student, it can be paid with a year of free service.

    Many dental clinics in Puerto Vallarta are state-of-the art but they tend to be simple environments with ordinary laminate counters, rather than the granite and marble receptions seen in the fancier counterparts of their neighbors to the north. North American cities have dental offices with inlaid floors, custom carpets, creative lighting and elaborate play areas for children. The décor in Mexico is plain, functional and doesn’t usually look like a high end hotel lobby, art gallery or law office.

    Dentists in Puerto Vallarta ordinarily work on their own without an assistant and will do your teeth cleaning, whereas in the States a hygienist, who can make as much as $65 per hour, not only cleans your teeth but also does your exam.

    Patient insurance doesn’t figure into the pricing system, which significantly raises prices to meet the market; malpractice insurance is non-existent.

    That said, we recommend you do your research before booking appointments. If you have friends who’ve had Mexican dental work, ask to look in their mouths, inquire how happy they are with everything from the cosmetics to their bite. You can get everything from Zoom cleaning to implants in Mexico at a great savings with complete peace of mind.

  • Vallarta Has The Best Side Trips: Melaque

    Melaque: Within short driving distances of Puerto Vallarta you will never run out of exciting and interesting places to visit. We love Melaque, just a stone’s throw north of Barra de Navidad, for so many great reasons. We have always loved this trip and discover something every time we travel this southern route. We recommend at least an overnight but once you arrive, we guarantee you’ll want to relax in this romantic setting for longer.

    We plan to stop around lunchtime in Careyes on our way. Though it’s considered a luxury community and some sadly mistake it for being off limits to the public, it’s a very welcoming settlement with fabulous restaurants and a smattering of lovely shops. Our personal favorite eatery is La Coscolina. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu is varied with choices for all appetites and their ice dream alone is worth a mini-layover.

    The village of your destination is actually San Patricio – Melaque, and Villa Obregon is also adjacent but we have found that everyone refers to this entire area as Melaque. It’s become a fairly modern town from the time we originally happened upon it years ago. Accommodations are easy to find these days and we recommend reserving at least one night before venturing forth; it’s best to inquire about availability of vacancies in the middle of high season, December to March.

    We have a short list of suggestions with enough gusto to share our opinion that the best Mexican restaurant in town is Ayala. There’s also an excellent French café in town that rivals anything you might find in Puerto Vallarta; give Bistro Gigi a try for a delightful surprise. Aside from Ayala, we’d send you to Estela’s for Chili rellenos; and if you love your chilaquiles for breakfast, check out The Frog, and stop into La Taza Negra first thing in the mornings for a cup of delicious java. La Oficina has great hamburgers for those seeking a break from local cuisine and they also serve a mean margarita. Head to Albatros Bar for Happy Hour and fab sunsets.

    Though Puerto Vallarta has some of the best swimming beaches we’ve seen on the west coast, we love getting in the water at Melaque. There’s super surfing and skimboarding at the main beach but the west end is best for those who simply want to get wet and have a good paddling around.

    Events take place in the main square, which has been carefully preserved over time; Mexicans have vacationed here for decades. If the locals love it, it must be good!

    Refugees: Though they won’t be traveling through Puerto Vallarta, and whether you’re sympathetic to the plight of droves of refugees seeking asylum in the United States, it’s beneficial to understand why they are heading in that direction. We are proud of the fact that Mexico, the country they are passing through, has given more aid and understanding than most expected, including the migrants. Mexico has taken on the task of asking the UN for support, and approaching this issue of tragic proportion with humanitarian and charitable actions. In a statement to the UN, the Mexican Foreign Ministry “seeks to guarantee the security and integrity of migrants, particularly minors, the elderly and women, and to avoid people being deceived by international criminal organizations dedicated to human trafficking, who put their lives in danger…”

    Most of these people are coming from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala, countries where the lives of so many are in danger as a direct result of meddling over the past few decades by the US government. The interference in elections, providing of arms to rebels and government sources, the presence of US armed forces, and the lack of assistance where it has been truly needed in these countries contribute to the mass movement of desperate human beings seeking survival.

    Problems began more than a century ago, with US based businesses taking over banking and infiltrating federal and local governments. Think banana and you’re off to a good start understanding the foundation of this dilemma. Very few people realize the US Dollar is the official currency of countries, of which the US has taken over financial systems, including El Salvador and Ecuador. During the 1980’s, the dominance of US politics in Central America was so effectual that tongue犀利士
    -in-cheek references were made to the Pentagon Republic. For a complete history lesson on US interference in Latin America, once can find some astounding revelations by researching Nicaragua, Reagan, and contra rebels. Where humanitarian aid was needed, all that was given was military aid. Arms dealers made millions during this period while citizens became nothing more than casualties.

    It was at this time that Central Americans embarked on serious migration efforts to North America by whatever means they could find. Central Americans have been seeking security in the United States for nearly half a century. Both Republican and Democrat administrations are responsible for abetting atrocities. Washington DC has long been willing to fail to notice the ongoing corruption of crooked regimes, in support of the ruling elite. A selected few continue to make the decisions and reap the returns, while families, single mothers with children, elderly, and the desperately unemployed seek refuge, banging on a glass door few are able to shatter. All that seems to matter is US economic gain to a handful or enormously wealthy individuals.

  • Puerto Vallarta – Turtles On The Move

    Sea Turtles

    The season for baby turtle release is coming to an end in Puerto Vallarta. If you haven’t had the opportunity, there are still many chances. Several locations exist up and down the coast, and the concierge in most hotels can guide you to the closest one. Not many places around the globe make it possible for tourists and locals alike to participate in this exciting activity. Sea turtles are a vital part of our ocean ecosystem. They contribute to keeping a balance of seagrass, sponge, and jellyfish populations. Sea turtles transport nutrients and support other sealife. In Puerto Vallarta, we can be turtle midwives and contribute to the health of our oceans.

    After the mother turtle makes her way to a nesting spot on the beach in Puerto Vallarta and the coast of Nayarit, the nests become vulnerable to predators of all kinds; iguanas, birds, dogs, and humans, to name a few. It is illegal to interfere with a turtle laying her eggs or the nest itself, while the eggs incubate. Most of us are aware of this problem, but animals have no idea there are laws to protect them and the defenseless turtles.

    Our first adventure saving baby turtles happened completely by chance. Having late lunch on the beach in Mismaloya, we were beckoned by friends who were local Mexicans. They were excited to tell us we had arrived in time to be part of a baby turtle release. We couldn’t have been more surprised. Or elated. We quickly finished our meal, paid the bill, and made our way to the north end of the beach. The thrill of holding a baby turtle, (which many operations no longer allow) was something we will never forget. Having baby turtles run over your bare toes on their path to the sea is more pleasurable than we ever imagined. Everyone with few exceptions, is sad to learn that less than 10% of the little critters actually make it to their destination. They need all the help they can get.

    Releases occur around the clock. Like humans, it’s hard to schedule birth. If you’re told that turtle release happens only in the dark, under the moonlight… book with another tour. We’ve also been told by unsuspecting people that this program can only be found on Tuesdays. Or Saturdays. Whatever. All nonsense.

    In most of the turtle camps in Puerto Vallarta, run by non-profits, and often importing volunteers from faraway places, you will be delighted to learn about the whole migration of sea turtles by people who have found a way to devote time to this cause. These volunteers, of all ages, are well educated and informative, sharing their knowledge. Some have been featured on Animal Planet and National Geographic.

    If you are so lucky as to happen upon a turtle nest while wandering on the beach, day or night, immediately contact the authorities. Bomberos (firemen and women) are trained to assist with all animal issues, from bees, to crocodiles, snakes and turtles.
