  • Back To My Beloved Puerto Vallarta

I recently returned to Puerto Vallarta to spend a 10-day Thanksgiving holiday with my partner and 4 other close friends. It had been a long seven-year hiatus since I last visited this beautiful vacation destination. It was great to be back!

What I love most about this Mexican seaport, besides its beautiful and remote beaches, are the people. The locals are friendly, informative, having a simple and authentic approach to life.

Taniel Chemsian of Timothy Real Estate Group recommended we stay at a villa named Villa Azul Celeste in Lower Conchas Chinas. His suggestion couldn’t have been a more perfect and ideal vacation property for me and my friends.

    View from Amapas Romantic Zone
    View from Amapas Romantic Zone

The property is about 2 miles south of downtown Puerto Vallarta and a few minutes taxi or bus ride to virtually anywhere you wanted to go. The villa was secluded and right on the water with its own pool and private beach. The staff was incredible; our private cook prepared delicious, Mexican specialties. Whatever we wanted we received. One thing to remember is if you want fresh cranberries for your Thanksgiving dinner, ask the staff to purchase them from the market early since they are imported and sell out fast.

A lot has changed over the seven years; there are more conveniences such as Costco and Wal-Mart, new shopping malls hosting prominent department stores, great new restaurants and incredible new condominium developments for someone wanting to purchase a home in this tropical paradise.

A fabulous new steak house in the Marina Vallarta recommended by Taniel Chemsian is a place called Sonora Grill. The ambiance was inviting, sophisticated and modern. The quality of the meat was incredible and the price point was reasonable.

The new Malecon, where only pedestrians are allowed to roam freely, now provides for a relaxing and comfortable venue for a little shopping and having a great lunch. The Malecon is now connected to the famous Playa Los Muertos by the new Rio Cuale pedestrian bridge.

Puerto Vallarta has developing nicely and has created a beautiful place to not only vacation but an ideal town at which to retire. During my stay I viewed a fine and affordable selection of condominium properties with Taniel. I was amazed at what your money can buy here vs. a property on any American coastline. There simply is no comparison.

I am 53 years old and definitely could see myself spending half my time in Puerto Vallarta and the other half in San Diego where I live. At these value prices, it can be easily done.

There is one more thing that I always do when I visit Puerto Vallarta and that is to take a private boat or water taxi to a more secluded beach. In the past I have been to Yelapa and love it because it is quiet and quaint with a beautiful old church and pleasant restaurants.

This time we went to a beach called Las Animas, which I highly recommend as well. The water is clear and pristine, with white sand stretching out. The beach is also dotted with 3-4 restaurants, which is just perfect. It is a wider and bigger beach than Yelapa with chase lounges and tables setup with white tablecloths.

There is nothing like spending a Sunday afternoon with great friends, sipping tequila, eating ceviche and listening to a guitar player singing old Latin pasillos and ballads. It was truly magical and a moment in time I will always remember.

Once again I thank Taniel Chemsian who has lived in Puerto Vallarta for 10 years serving the community for recommending that special day to me. Muchisimas Gracias!

  • The Story of Raicilla

Travelers along the western seaboard of Mexico in the vicinity of Puerto Vallarta occasionally happen onto roadside vendors of a moonshine mezcal called Raicilla (rye-see-ya). The name Raicilla was originally used to disguise this type of mezcal in order to escape restrictions on alcohol production and the related taxes. My experience has always been that the sale of Raicilla was somewhat clandestine; sales being made on side streets or in small palapas clinging to the mountainsides at the edge of town. Packaging was usually a screwtop Coke bottle or some other recyclable container and the quality of the beverage verged on the raw side. Behind the harsh flavor, there was always an interesting aftertaste that brought me back and fueled my search for a smoother more civilized Raicilla.

For the past ten years I have crisscrossed Mexico looking for new tequilas and mezcals and adding to my research notes, always searching and sampling. Recently, I discovered a legitimate producer of Raicilla, one who has combined the best of historic techniques with the advantages of modern technology. This is the “Destiladora del Real” located in the mountains above Puerto Vallarta. In the past, this area was famous for it’s mining, and the well-paid miners expected their liquor to be of the best quality.

The towns producing Raicilla are San Sebastian del Oeste, Hostotipaquillo, Talpa, Mascota, Atenguillo, Guachinango, and Etzatlan. A combination of reddish brown soils, sun, and rain in this part of western Jalisco created the perfect environment for the growth of the Agave Lechuguilla which is the sugar source for Raicilla. This agave is a member of the botanical Group Crenatae and is identified as Agave Inaequidens or Agave Maximiliana, commonly known as “Pata de Mula” (Mules Foot). Agave Lechugilla is somewhat smaller than the agaves that pulque and tequila are made from. As the agave matures it begins to put up a flowering stalk (quiote); this is cut off so that all of the plants sugars are directed to the heart. About the 8th to 10th year the plant matures and is harvested by “Jimadores” who cut away the spiny outer leaves with long handled knives (coas). The heart of the plant that remains looks like a pineapple and in fact is called a “piña”. These piñas, weighing about one hundred pounds, are taken from the fields to the “taberna” where Raicilla processing takes place.

Every step of this process is done completely by hand. The piñas are placed in large wood fired brick ovens (hornos) where they are cooked for 24 hours. After cooking they are chopped into chunks with machetes and beaten into a pulp with large wooden mallets (mazos) in a wooden tray called a”batea”.

The crushed agave and juice is placed in 100 liter wooden vats with copper bottoms (perols), or 55gal. drums, where it ferments with the natural plant yeasts for 7 – 9 days. After fermentation is complete, a cap is placed on the vat and sealed with adobe mud, this is connected to a copper distillation coil and the vat heated.

After distilling for about 8 hours, the resulting distillate is a high quality, 100% natural Raicilla known as “Las Raicillas del Real” or “La Punta”

To appreciate the efforts that go into a “boutique” Raicilla, consider that it takes 15 pounds of agave to produce 1 liter of Raicilla and that only 50 liters of distillate are made every 24 hours.

Traditionally, the first few drops of distillate that emerge are tossed in the air, if it evaporates before landing, the brew is good.

Raicilla can be consumed straight in a “Caballito” (tequila shot glass), but is more commonly served chilled in a wineglass, over the rocks, or with Squirt or some type of grapefruit soda.

A popular saying of the Mexican people is: “Para Todo Mal, Mezcal y Para Todo Bien Tambien” (For everything bad, Mezcal and for everything good too)

  • Puerto Vallarta A Community That Stands with Love in Adversity

A Community That Stands with Love in Adversity

Timothy Real Estate Group wants our staff, friends and clients know that Puerto Vallarta has been through hurricanes, torrential storms, and even a little flooding with no problem.  We made it through the global economic downturn in 2008, and we will make it through this strenuous period as well.

    How do we know this?

Because Puerto Vallarta is full of residents who love their home.  Both the locals & people from all over the world have moved to this beautiful town after falling in love with it.  Vallarta’s beauty, great weather, wonderful culture and friends from all nations is a beautiful place to call home and the heart of this destination is now and will always be the people who love this place.   And we know and believe in the power of love in the face of adversity.

For myself, I moved to Puerto Vallarta because I fell in love with the residents, and because I have always dreamed of living near the ocean.  When I moved from Los Angeles, I comforted myself by saying “If I don’t like it, I can always move back”.  I had a private office in Beverly Hills with a wonderful realty company that had been holding my office for me for a year. One day they called to see if I was coming back to work.  That was a pivotal moment for me because I had no hesitation in responding:  no.   I have never regretted that decision for a moment and I am more committed than ever to helping my adopted community.

It is comforting that our community is full of giving and caring neighbors.  We know that many of our friends and neighbors may be having a difficult time right now and we want to help.  Many of the local businesses may be starting to suffer and we want to make sure our senior friends and neighbors are OK.  We will happily help with the pickup of medications, take you to the grocery store, help with errands and more.

What really makes Puerto Vallarta beautiful is the people.  Sure, we are surrounded with the blue Pacific Ocean, green Sierra Madres and breathtaking Sunsets, but the most beautiful thing about the Bay of Banderas are our friends and neighbors.

  • 365 Fun Things To Do In Puerto Vallarta #5 Go to Yelapa

    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta
    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta

Yelapa is a small fishing town located on the southernmost cove of the Bay of Banderas.  It is only accessible by boat and you can take a boat-taxi from Los Muertos Beach, Mismaloya or Boca de Tomatlan.  There are also day cruise excursions that include Yelapa in their tours.  From Los Muertos Beach, it is a 45 minute boat ride. It is a small community of less than 1,000 people and a handful of foreign residents.   It attracts artists and bohemian-types who enjoy the amazing scenery and the lack of modern conveniences.   There are roads (more like paths) throughout the village but they are for foot or horse or burro (some bicycles) – no cars.

    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta
    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta

Of course now there is electricity in Yelapa and cell phones work everywhere in the world, so you are never fully away from civilization anymore.  But this is as about as close as you can get in Puerto Vallarta. There are a few small inns and rental properties in Yelapa so many tourists stay there for their entire vacation; however, for most it is a fun day trip.   It is quite rustic and most of the buildings are open air with palapa roofs. Most of the activities revolve around the beach; however, you can hike in the mountains to a natural waterfall that feeds into a brook where you can swim in the clean, cool water.  You can also take a horseback ride around the area.

    Waterfall Yelapa
    Waterfall Yelapa

Of course there is ample access to the freshest fish and seafood so you will love eating a big lunch while you are enjoying a perfect sunny day on the beach in Yelapa.  And what to drink?   This is the place where you can find Raicilla which comes from the stills in the mountains that surround the town.   Also called “Mexican Moonshine”, raicilla is distilled from the agave plant which is also used to make tequila.  It is considered to be mildly hallucinogenic so it must be imbibed slowly – which is easy to do as the flavor is very different.    And of course, dessert is always a slice of pie from the famous Pie Ladies of Yelapa (coconut is the best!!).

I have been going to Yelapa for 25 years.  It has hardly changed at all.  It has a communal land ownership system (ejidal) so it is unlikely that any large commercial development will happen any time soon.  It is a wonderful day trip and a great way to enjoy the immense beauty of this area.

  • Peregrinaciones In December

The Peregrinaciones or Processions are celebrated during the first 12 days of December.

Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ was given the name “La Virgen de Guadalupe”, or The Virgen of Guadalupe” in Mexico by church authorities almost 500 years ago.

In Puerto Vallarta, the Peregrinaciones  start primarily at Calle 31 de Octubre and lead down Calle Juarez to the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located across from city hall.

    Peregrinaciones In December
    Peregrinaciones In December

To many people of Mexico, ‘La Virgen” is a sign of faith and hope and on December 12th, HER day, “Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe”, thousands of people walk in procession to the church to search for help or thank her for prayers answered.

Throughout the twelve days of Christmas processions of many hotels, restaurants and other companies have their employees and their families dress up in traditional Mexican garb and walk to the church, singing Christmas carols, while holding candles, baskets of fruit and vegetables and other items to offer to La Virgen.

There are Mariachi groups also who make the procession, playing their wonderful instruments and singing along the way.

Nightly throughout the 12 days of Peregrinaciones and all day on December 12th, there are many “puestos” or stands, selling tamales, sodas, tacos, fruit, churros, ejote, pozole and  t-shirts of La Virgen and all things Christmas for you to enjoy.

If you are in Puerto Vallarta during this time, it is one of the best experiences to be had, especially on December 12th.

    Feliz Navidad!

  • Puerto Vallarta: Ojo De Venado – Protection

    Ojo de Venado

We found it fascinating when we asked a young mother in Puerto Vallarta about the bracelet on her newborn and discovered it was to ward off envy.

Ojo de Venado or Deer Eye in English, is a special seed, usually attached with a soft piece of red yarn. The child wears it until it falls off. You see surfers and divers with special necklaces and bracelets; taxi drivers and, well…anyone with an auto, with rosaries dangling from the rear view mirror. There are many talismans in Puerto Vallarta, but babies are considered especially vulnerable and have their own brand. These bracelets are seen on wee ones of all economic levels, and you can rely on loving aunties to keep the tradition going.

Many cultures share the belief that envy is a powerful emotion and can be harmful for a person who is being coveted. Nip it in the bud and make sure baby is protected with the eye of a deer, which keeps the child safe from many bad things.

Most of us love babies and many are simply curious to have a peek at a new arrival. In Puerto Vallarta, make sure your inquisitiveness is accompanied by genuine admiration. It’s not prohibitive to touch the infant’s hand or perhaps the blanket they’re wrapped in, to make sincere contact. We always ask for permission to actually hold the baby because doing so is a sure sign of respect; even if only for a quick moment, and then handing her back to her parent, or on to another admirer.

Mexican parents are inclined to believe that babies are little sponges, soaking up whatever sentiments are directed towards them. The Ojo de Venado will make sure that anyone gazing upon the innocent newborn with any thoughts that might be damaging is going to be thwarted. On the other hand, those of us who pay attention in a loving and kind way will also be absorbed; this will inform the infant there are people in the world who are to be trusted and are willing to provide comfort. North of the border, it’s usually expected to ooh and ah over a new arrival, but you would rarely ask to hold someone’s baby, and touching is simply out of the question. However, when attending events in Puerto Vallarta where newborns are present, proper behavior and interaction are much different and a lot more fun.

  • Puerto Vallarta – Frida Kahlo

    Frida Kahlo

In Puerto Vallarta, we have been a fan of Frida Kahlo for many years.  Frida is an icon in Mexico and has long been revered in many ways. She is a symbol of strength, and the ability to overcome great obstacles.

Frida’s mother was mestiza from Oaxaca who married a German immigrant; they had four daughters, Friday being second to the youngest. Frida was born in Coyocán, is a house that has been turned into a museum dedicated to her art and life. We highly recommend a stopover at La Casa Azul, as it’s known, when visiting Mexico City.

The allure and spirit of Frida Kahlo ignited a huge following, whereas she had been relatively unknown for the exception of art and history students. Her life and tribulations were brought to the big screen with a movie starring Salma Hayek in 2002 and since that time, Friday has developed into somewhat of a pop culture icon. We often wonder what Frida would think of her face and signature decorating everything from T-shirts and tequila t lipstick and nail polish. Perhaps she’d be amused and have a good laugh. Friday Kahlo created her own fashion, didn’t follow norms and was known to darken her facila hair with colored pencils. She was not a subject of beauty in her era but has been highly commercialized in current times. Considering her dalliance with the Mexican Communist party, her unapologetic stance on her own dating habits, men and women of all ages and backgrounds, and her complete authenticity, it is hard to imagine her agreement with how she is venerated today. Yet, we believe she would be a touted as a major hero in Puerto Vallarta, with the gay presence and gender bending that is encouraged in this town. It is exactly how she lived and presented herself.

Frida Kahlo suffered from polio as a child and grew up with one leg shorter and thinner than the other. Her father encouraged her to partake in sports, which were not considered ladylike at the time, and she was extremely grateful for his support. It was her photographer father who encouraged her art, as well, after she was in a horrid accident when she was eighteen and spent years in recovery. Her pain, multiple surgeries and anguish are evident in her paintings that followed. A childhood hobby enabled her to develop a livelihood that would give her worldwide fame in the art community.

Frida Kahlo abhorred Western Imperialism and campaigned against the oppressive labor conditions of the United States. Today a search for her on Etsy will lead to nearly 30,000 results. It’s interesting to speculate what Frida might think about the commercialization of her legacy.

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Acuatlón Deportivo

What is an Acuatlón Deportivo, you ask? It’s one tough sporting event, that’s what it is. This Sports Aquathlon will hold its fourth annual event in Puerto Vallarta, a three staged race that will take place on the Malecón and in the ocean. Though this is an all ages sport, it’s really for the well trained athlete. Involving running, swimming and more running, one must be in terrific shape. Anyone between the ages of nine (9) and sixty (60) are welcome to give it a go; there will be several categories, with divisions for men, women and children.

This contest will be held Sunday July 7, 2019 and begins at 8 am in front of the Rosita Hotel. We’ve heard there will be great prizes, which oftentimes means cash purses.

Open Category is ages sixteen and up with a running route of 2.5 km along the Malecón, a 1000 meter swim (500 meters each way; out, and back to shore again), with the third and final leg being another 2.5 km back the way they came.

A children’s course is being laid out in three levels. There will be Infantil for ages 9 – 11; Children for ages 11 – 13; and the teenagers course, which will be run by kids ages 14 and 15 years old.

The water of Banderas Bay is perfect for swimming this time of year. Lifeguards will monitor from the beach and in the water.

For those wanting to register, the website http://www.acuatlonvallarta.com is up and running but you’ll want a grasp of Spanish to complete your registration. Another option is to find Luigi at the Agustín Flores Contreras Municipal Stadium, across from the Sheraton. Luigi will be at the stadium daily from 5 pm – 9 pm to sign you up and take your entrance fees. It will cost you $450 pesos to register, or sign up on the website.

Your race kit will include a Acuatlón Deportivo T-shirt and swim-cap, participation medal, and your e-chip, which will record your race time. You can pick up your package on Saturday, July 6th, from 4 pm – 9 pm at Innovasport, the sports store in the La Isla shopping center. There will also be last-minute signups for $550 pesos.  There will be a mandatory pre-racemeeting at 7 pm on July 6 for all participants at the Hotel Rosita.

Water will be available along the route, along with medical staff; snacks will be offered at the end of the course.

This is a big event for Puerto Vallarta with national and international athletes expected to partake in the competition. The race has a limit of 300 competitors so don’t delay if you plan to sign up.

  • Ruben Toledo and Ralph Pucci collaborate on design.

We find these designs simple and chic and wanted to share them with you…  This is definitely part of ‘Inspired Living’… and we hope that as the real estate market in Puerto Vallarta shifts so do the design elements being introduced here.

Since meeting in the mid-1980’s, artist Ruben Toledo and Ralph Pucci International’s Ralph Pucci have mingled socially and rubbed shoulders professionally, the latter relationship spawning seven mannequin collections. When the two reconnected at a party this year, an old topic resurfaced—joining forces on furniture and talk soon yielded a signed series of limited editions aptly named Collaboration.

In his Midtown studio, Toledo had his way with existing styles of Pucci tables and seating, garnishing the cerused-oak surfaces with oil paint yet leaving stainless-steel and glass components intact. Now, a landscape of enigmatic faces populates the square side table. On the bench and dining table, silhouettes chronicle fashion evolution, from Romantic and Victorian to flapper and mod. Hypnotic eyes peer out from the console, cocktail table, and chair.

While this marked the duo’s first nonfashion alliance, after so many mannequins, the lure of display proved hard to resist. So Toledo spent 10 days in the penthouse showroom, painting murals that became the back drop for a month long exhibit and a party.

  • Being Cool in Puerto Vallarta

How to Keep Cool in the Coming Months

It’s gloriously cool in Puerto Vallarta right now. The evenings are breezy, the ocean blows cool air up toward the mountains and humidity is relatively low. The temperature in Puerto Vallarta stays mean pretty much throughout the year but right now we can feel the humidity beginning to crank up. Tourism levels dwindle down to less frenzied than winter months. It’s a great time to be in Puerto Vallarta.

Fans are your best friend during this season in Puerto Vallarta. Air conditioners are swell, but they jack up the electric bill, especially if you run them around the clock. Air conditioners aren’t the healthiest answer for cooling off, for neither you nor the environment. We favor alternatives.

Ceiling fans are in every home in Puerto Vallarta and the safest way to keep everyone cool. Make sure yours are spinning in the right direction; clockwise for best results, blowing air in a downward direction. If they’re turning the other way, you are sending air up and that doesn’t do a whole lot of good for bringing down room temperature. Fans need to be cleaned periodically, as well. Your maid will see to that, but if you do your own cleaning, bring the fan to full stop for this action. Wipe with a clean damp cloth; if it’s the kitchen fan, it will probably be greasy and a simple soap like Dawn dishwashing liquid will do the trick.

Satin and cotton (the higher the thread count the better) sheets will add comfort to the nighttime. Puerto Vallarta won’t cool off much in the summer from sunset to sunrise. Sheets with polyester blends will cause you to sweat more and don’t absorb moisture. If you aren’t comfortable sleeping in the nude, wear loose fitting cotton. The fabric takes up the sweat and will keep you cooler.

We keep a fan directed throughout the night towards the bed and have been known to put pillow cases, whole pillows, and a top sheet in the freezer right before tucking in for the night. Leave them in the freezer to cool for about half an hour, toss them on the bed, jump in, and sweet dreams.

Icing pulse points is a great way to lower body temp; wrists, elbows, neck, groin, ankles and behind the knees. Cold showers any time of day.

Always stay hydrated in the tropics. As a bonus, you’ll have more energy. Alcohol doesn’t help to keep body temperature down, though it’s hard to resist that evening cocktail or glass of wine with dinner.

Hammocks, if you find them comfortable, are great for airflow. Keep a cross breeze up with open windows and make sure they are secure.

    Que es cómo es.
