  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Democrats Abroad

    Democrats Abroad in Puerto Vallarta

Democrats from the United States stick together, no matter how far from home they have flung themselves. In Puerto Vallarta, they meet monthly and have common goals. They sponsor educational programs, special events, and have an online newsletter. They keep abreast of political issues and developments, and make it their own responsibility to see that everyone, regardless of affiliation, is informed. They lobby the White House, Congress and their own state governments from whence they came when they moved to Puerto Vallarta, on issues that will affect US citizens living abroad, including national and international concerns. They take on the duty of motivating and registering voters, providing absentee ballot assistance and they organize any primary voting for those living abroad. Democrats Abroad in Puerto Vallarta is a non-profit organization.
Democrats Abroad in Puerto Vallarta elect and send a voting delegation to the Democratic Convention, which will be held next year at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 13–16, 2020. Joe Solmonese, former President of the Human Rights Campaign, was named convention CEO in March of 2019. It should be a very interesting convention, leading into the 2020 elections.
Democrats Abroad in Puerto Vallarta also elect eight members to the Democratic National Committee, which is the Democratic Party’s governing body in Washington, DC.
The Democrats Abroad in Puerto Vallarta Costa Banderas Chapter of Mexico was originally organized in November 2007, in anticipation of the election of President Barack Obama. They now boast over two hundred members, consisting mostly of US citizens who reside in Puerto Vallarta, as well as communities to the north in the state of Nayarit.
For the purpose of this present blog, we are posting their next meeting, which is Wednesday, September 18, 2019, at the new location of La Dolce Vita Bistro on Basilio Badillio. La Dolce Vita serves the same Italian menu as their original location, which is located on the Malecón. The meeting will be held from 5 – 7 PM and the restaurant will offer 2-for-1 margaritas and daiquiris for $70 pesos. There will also be beer and wine available, plus a full bar. La Dolce Vita Bistro has great pizza, which we encourage attendees to taste following the meeting.
All are welcome. For more information or to join the Democrats Abroad in Puerto Vallarta Costa Banderas Chapter of Mexico visit democratsabroad.org or email to cb.democratsabroad@gmail.com.

  • Puerto Vallarta A Community That Stands with Love in Adversity

A Community That Stands with Love in Adversity

Timothy Real Estate Group wants our staff, friends and clients know that Puerto Vallarta has been through hurricanes, torrential storms, and even a little flooding with no problem.  We made it through the global economic downturn in 2008, and we will make it through this strenuous period as well.

    How do we know this?

Because Puerto Vallarta is full of residents who love their home.  Both the locals & people from all over the world have moved to this beautiful town after falling in love with it.  Vallarta’s beauty, great weather, wonderful culture and friends from all nations is a beautiful place to call home and the heart of this destination is now and will always be the people who love this place.   And we know and believe in the power of love in the face of adversity.

For myself, I moved to Puerto Vallarta because I fell in love with the residents, and because I have always dreamed of living near the ocean.  When I moved from Los Angeles, I comforted myself by saying “If I don’t like it, I can always move back”.  I had a private office in Beverly Hills with a wonderful realty company that had been holding my office for me for a year. One day they called to see if I was coming back to work.  That was a pivotal moment for me because I had no hesitation in responding:  no.   I have never regretted that decision for a moment and I am more committed than ever to helping my adopted community.

It is comforting that our community is full of giving and caring neighbors.  We know that many of our friends and neighbors may be having a difficult time right now and we want to help.  Many of the local businesses may be starting to suffer and we want to make sure our senior friends and neighbors are OK.  We will happily help with the pickup of medications, take you to the grocery store, help with errands and more.

What really makes Puerto Vallarta beautiful is the people.  Sure, we are surrounded with the blue Pacific Ocean, green Sierra Madres and breathtaking Sunsets, but the most beautiful thing about the Bay of Banderas are our friends and neighbors.

We are here when you need us and we are easy to find, just pick your favorite mode:

  • VAllarta: Whats An INAPAM Card

INAPAM Card INAPAM is a great benefit for retirees living in Puerto Vallarta. Who doesn’t like to save money, given the opportunity? The goal of INAPAM, officially Instituto Nacional de las Personas Adultas Mayores, is to provide programs for those over the age of 60 years who wish to stay active. This covers a lot of territory. INAPAM’s focus is making sure that elderly people in Mexico are taking advantage of their due rights and opportunities. INAPAM has been around for a long while but it was only at the turn of this century that the government began implementing the program to affect coverage for families, run at both a state and federal level. They provide education on the topics of mental and physical health, host cultural activities and help care providers get the training they need to assist with elderly living situations.

Anyone can get an INAPAM card, as long as you’re 60 years or older and have the proper papers. You are entitled to some great discounts in Puerto Vallarta if you qualify. Property taxes are chief among them. You already get a discount if you pay early and with your INAPAM card you will get a full 50%.
To get your very own card, go to one of the DIF offices in Puerto Vallarta; there are several locations around the city. It helps to speak Spanish but it’s not completely necessary; we know those who’ve managed to stumble their way through the process but it rarely takes only one visit. Bring originals and copies of passport, electric (CFE) or water (Seapal) bills in your name, and any residency card you may possess. It is not necessary to be a permanent resident of Puerto Vallarta but if you are, if might speed up the process. If you come fully prepared, there’s a good chance of you leaving the DIF office with your INAPAM card in hand. Arrive early, no later than 8 am and get your name/s on the list. The office doesn’t open until 9 am but a guard will be there to take names, which will allow you to receive a number ahead of those who come later. By 9 am, that list will be a couple dozen people long and it’s too late then. Take a book, knitting, a friend to talk to, or whatever helps you pass the time, because, like the immigration office, they’re in no big hurry. You’ll also need photos for your card; the photographer (we recommend Plaza Caracol) will know the correct amount required.
As stated, the discount for your Predial (property taxes) is worth the trip, but there are many other advantages. In Puerto Vallarta you’ll get a discounted bus fare, which doesn’t seem like a big deal but you also get the same discount on tour buses, traveling distances all over Mexico. Some restaurants give discounts if you show your card. Ask. Traveling within the country by air can also be discounted. If you have a Mexican driver’s license, it will cost you half price for renewal; theater tickets are cheaper; special events are discounted. INAPAM puts on events specifically for cardholders.
Our advice is to arrive at the DIF office very early, as they are known to run out of cards on busy days.

  • 365 Fun Things To Do In Puerto Vallarta #5 Go to Yelapa

    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta
    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta

Yelapa is a small fishing town located on the southernmost cove of the Bay of Banderas.  It is only accessible by boat and you can take a boat-taxi from Los Muertos Beach, Mismaloya or Boca de Tomatlan.  There are also day cruise excursions that include Yelapa in their tours.  From Los Muertos Beach, it is a 45 minute boat ride. It is a small community of less than 1,000 people and a handful of foreign residents.   It attracts artists and bohemian-types who enjoy the amazing scenery and the lack of modern conveniences.   There are roads (more like paths) throughout the village but they are for foot or horse or burro (some bicycles) – no cars.

    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta
    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta

Of course now there is electricity in Yelapa and cell phones work everywhere in the world, so you are never fully away from civilization anymore.  But this is as about as close as you can get in Puerto Vallarta. There are a few small inns and rental properties in Yelapa so many tourists stay there for their entire vacation; however, for most it is a fun day trip.   It is quite rustic and most of the buildings are open air with palapa roofs. Most of the activities revolve around the beach; however, you can hike in the mountains to a natural waterfall that feeds into a brook where you can swim in the clean, cool water.  You can also take a horseback ride around the area.

    Waterfall Yelapa
    Waterfall Yelapa

Of course there is ample access to the freshest fish and seafood so you will love eating a big lunch while you are enjoying a perfect sunny day on the beach in Yelapa.  And what to drink?   This is the place where you can find Raicilla which comes from the stills in the mountains that surround the town.   Also called “Mexican Moonshine”, raicilla is distilled from the agave plant which is also used to make tequila.  It is considered to be mildly hallucinogenic so it must be imbibed slowly – which is easy to do as the flavor is very different.    And of course, dessert is always a slice of pie from the famous Pie Ladies of Yelapa (coconut is the best!!).

I have been going to Yelapa for 25 years.  It has hardly changed at all.  It has a communal land ownership system (ejidal) so it is unlikely that any large commercial development will happen any time soon.  It is a wonderful day trip and a great way to enjoy the immense beauty of this area.

  • Solar Energy Has A Hold In Vallarta, Finally

Solar Energy in Puerto Vallarta: Solar energy is not new. It was discovered and developed in 1839. Because coal was available by mining and created a lot of jobs, solar took a back burner to other forms of energy. When science and the general public began to be aware of the impact of oil and coal retrieval and their uses on the environment, solar was back in the forefront, getting much more attention. In 1881, the first real solar panel was produced by Charles Fritts, who discovered that dim, diffused light was capable of producing energy, as well as exposure to bright sunlight. The real breakthroughs didn’t occur however until the early 1940’s when Russell Ohl patented the solar cell design that has been adapted for the types of panels that are in use today.

It takes more than one panel to produce any efficient amount of energy, so most installations require several modules. Solar power in Puerto Vallarta becomes more popular with time and the price becomes more affordable. Most owners of these systems are amazingly delighted to receive their monthly power bills, and the cost of installation has become more reasonable with competition.

Developed structures will usually require a number of modules, to be determined by the size of the space being serviced; plus an inverter; a battery pack for storage, which is optional; interconnection wiring; and a solar tracking device, which is also optional but recommended.

We’ve heard of some people who’ve bought the equipment in the USA, carted it down, and found someone to do the installation here in Puerto Vallarta; however that’s not necessary. There are several reputable and reliable companies in the greater Puerto Vallarta area. We suggest you consult with a minimum of three, letting them know up front that you are getting competitive bids. Don’t go with the lowest bid; it may not be the best or worth your money. More importantly, make sure the company you hire will be willing and able to help with the coordination with CFE (the electric company). Before you get started, gather your past bills and have them handy for your installer. If you don’t have them for any reason, they are available on the CFE website and printable. Do your due diligence and ask about brand, origin of manufacturer, guarantees and warranties, extra equipment, KWH-per-area ratio, and cost of installation. Make sure to ask questions and keep notes. We’ve heard of homes having bills as little as 25 pesos, which we’ve been informed is the minimum.

This is a lifetime investment and worth every peso, recoverable in as short at time as two or three years. It’s good for your resale value, too.

  • Peregrinaciones In December

The Peregrinaciones or Processions are celebrated during the first 12 days of December.

Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ was given the name “La Virgen de Guadalupe”, or The Virgen of Guadalupe” in Mexico by church authorities almost 500 years ago.

In Puerto Vallarta, the Peregrinaciones  start primarily at Calle 31 de Octubre and lead down Calle Juarez to the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located across from city hall.

    Peregrinaciones In December
    Peregrinaciones In December

To many people of Mexico, ‘La Virgen” is a sign of faith and hope and on December 12th, HER day, “Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe”, thousands of people walk in procession to the church to search for help or thank her for prayers answered.

Throughout the twelve days of Christmas processions of many hotels, restaurants and other companies have their employees and their families dress up in traditional Mexican garb and walk to the church, singing Christmas carols, while holding candles, baskets of fruit and vegetables and other items to offer to La Virgen.

There are Mariachi groups also who make the procession, playing their wonderful instruments and singing along the way.

Nightly throughout the 12 days of Peregrinaciones and all day on December 12th, there are many “puestos” or stands, selling tamales, sodas, tacos, fruit, churros, ejote, pozole and  t-shirts of La Virgen and all things Christmas for you to enjoy.

If you are in Puerto Vallarta during this time, it is one of the best experiences to be had, especially on December 12th.

    Feliz Navidad!

  • Linda’s Puerto Vallarta Shopping Tips

    Puerto Vallarta’s Wonderful Markets

One of the most important things to good cooking is finding fresh, locally grown ingredients.  The experience of wandering through Mexico’s markets can be a beautiful experience not only experiencing the flavors of the culture but the flavors of the food.   Two of my favorite mercados in the downtown area of Puerto Vallarta is “El Mercado de Col. Emiliano Zapata”, located on the east end of Calle Lazaro Cardenas and the other is “El Mercado de Col. 5 de Diciembre”, located on Calle Brasila, near the Panteon (cemetery).
The mercado on calle Lazaro Cardenas opens very early, at 3am, because it is a main supplier to the local restaurants in Vallarta.  The seasonal fruits and vegetables are wonderful, as are the fresh herbs and even fresh juices, squeezed on the spot. Farm fresh eggs (do not put the eggs in the refrigerator!), and dried chiles and beans are also available.  There are also several fresh cheese “locales” within a block that have fresh panela and queso fresco amongst others. The mercado is open 7 days a week.

My favorite place to buy fresh fish and shellfish is the mercado on calle Brasilia.  This mercado is also open very early, with the freshest fish available that was caught early the same morning.  In many instances you can bargain a little price wise, especially if you purchase in large quantities.  Everyone is friendly and eager to assist you.  Be careful when you wear sandals because the cement it is wet and constantly being cleaned.   There is also a tortilleria on the south corner of this mercado for your convenience.  This mercado is open 7 days a week as well. Please do not hesitate to support these local markets.  It is fun, and also you are helping the local economy.

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: The Best Beach Town

What Makes Puerto Vallarta the Best Beach Town?

Puerto Vallarta was once a quiet port, agriculture being its main contribution. In the mid-60’s all that changed when John Huston decided to film his steamy movie The Night of the Iguana, based on the Tennessee Williams novel. The heat wasn’t just on screen however, and Hollywood gossip columns were on fire with rumors, photos and some substantial facts about the star Richard Burton’s ongoing offset affair with Elizabeth Taylor. With the mountains of preceding publicity, the huge success of the film put Puerto Vallarta on the map; this small town began a sensational climb to notoriety. Today, suites in the remodeled love nest of Burton and Taylor can be rented, in a luxurious setting known as Casa Kimberly, surrounded by splendid dining, tequila bar, pool and the incredible Puente del Amor, the Bridge of Love.
The Bay of Banderas, where Puerto Vallarta is nestled in the same latitude as the Hawaiian Islands, is the largest natural bay in Mexico. If you’re coming from Los Angeles it’s a quick flight of three hours, and a mere four and a half hours from New York. In the bay, one can find isolated beach havens and hopping hotspots, with a bit of everything in between. This makes Puerto Vallarta a destination for celebrities and busy people of all types, looking for a quick getaway with premier vacation necessities.
From Los Muertos to Playa de Oro, the most well known beaches in town, one will find gay beach clubs, high end restaurants, family friendly attractions, and peaceful retreats. Playa Sayulita, less than an hour from Puerto Vallarta, is a surfer’s paradise. El Anclote, in Punta de Mita has endless calm water where kids and adult can safely wade. Playa Mismaloya is a prime place to jump aboard a small skiff (panga) for a well guided fishing tour or buck the waves over to the famous rock formation Los Arcos for snorkeling and scuba diving.
Weddings and other elegant celebrations are common on the beaches, as well as the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe or one of the lesser known churches, all gorgeous, warm, and hospitable. Professional wedding planners abound in Puerto Vallarta.
Puerto Vallarta has world class golf courses, numerous hiking trails, and day or overnight trips to places like the mountain village of San Sebastián del Oeste, a rural community situated among the pines of the majestic Sierra Madre range. Puerto Vallarta has two world-class well-appointed shopping malls between the airport and central area of town; one on the ocean side and the other across from the cruise ship terminal, where vessels visit daily. Puerto Vallarta is a birdwatcher’s paradise and abundant with wildlife, in the jungle and sea. Puerto Vallarta has fishing, horseback riding, kayaking, plus the must-see Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens, for nature lovers of all kinds.

  • How do you find out what is happening in Puerto Vallarta?

    What Happens In Puerto Vallarta

It started in Las Vegas. Someone said “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” yet anyone with an ounce of brains knows that’s not necessarily true. People can hardly help keeping their mouths shut when something deliciously repeatable happens. In Puerto Vallarta, this goes back a long way. When John Huston first arrived to scout for his film The Night of the Iguana, based on the racy Tennessee Williams novel, word traveled fast, both in and out of the jungle. Locals lined up for parts as extras, people offered everything from beds and food, to property for the purpose of filming. When the actors began to arrive, it wasn’t long before news got back to Hollywood about the deeds and misdeeds of lovers and losers.

When something happens in Puerto Vallarta, chances of it staying in Puerto Vallarta are slim. Feeds on Facebook get posted all over the world and back around again. Instagram might show an entire story or just teasing trailers. Twitter only allows 280 characters per post but a lot can be said for those who know how to economize words for impact.

That said, how do you find out what is happening in Puerto Vallarta? Once the only source was message boards, online and off, but we were flummoxed as to how to find times for boat cruises, weather reports, how to adopt a dog or cat, hours of restaurants, locations of fresh produce markets, and such important information. Pre-Google, it was tough. Now it’s easy. Google “Puerto Vallarta” and you’re guided to overwhelming amounts of pages, so much so it’s bewildering at times.

What are trusted English language sources? The local newspapers have websites and they keep things relatively current. www.vallartadaily.com provides local and national news, weather updates, economy  and finances and have an events calendar that we feel safe to rely upon. www.banderasnews.com also reports local and national news, has an events calendar, plus gives reliable real estate updates. Opinion editorials are amusing and informative.

Bay Vallarta, found in print and online, is a great resource for local events, entertainment, and openings of new restaurants and businesses. PV Mirror and Vallarta Tribune are found around town in just about every business and also can be sourced online. They have loyal followings and letters to the editors can be entertaining. Gay Vallarta (www.gaypv.com) has a huge amount of information both hard copy and online and isn’t completely reserved for the LGBT crowd.

  • The Singing Queens Of Vallarta

The Singing Queens of Puerto Vallarta: We’ve seen some fine drag shows in Puerto Vallarta. Our favorites are, of course, those entertainers who use their own voice for vocals but we don’t mind a lip-syncing, if it’s good.
There are several venues in Puerto Vallarta to see great drag theater. With each passing year, we find these shows more professional. That might mean more expensive but for $250 pesos, you won’t find anything this good on the north side of the border.

With high season just around the corner, some favorite acts will be returning to Puerto Vallarta. Miss Conception is scheduled to open her International Tour from January to March performs at The Palm on Olas Altas this coming season. The amazing costume changes and her humor will keep you on your toes, and stunned by her enormous talent.

Joanna also performs at The Palm in Puerto Vallarta and has an impressive vocal range. She does her own singing and is also hysterically funny. Her impressions are knockout and she nails Cher, Adele, Streisand and several others. Imports, such as Dame Edna from England and Mama Tits from Seattle are also highly recommended, though perhaps a bit raunchier than some of the others.

Dueling Queens is a show to catch at Act ll on Basilio Badillo. Five hilarious actors will have you rolling with laughter and jumping with glee! Their show is for all ages; young, old, gay or straight, you will laugh yourself silly. Other quirky queens to catch are Chi Chi Rones (both she and Joanna are part of the Dueling Queens), Sutton Lee Seymour, Hedda Lettuce, all witty and fun. They all have very different acts and you’d be sorry to miss any of them. Mama Tits will take you on a journey of her own personal life that will have you screaming with laughter and trickling a little tear, as well.

There are other drag shows in Puerto Vallarta that aren’t necessarily family friendly but they’re a lot of fun, especially for the LGBT crowd. Bar Fiesta on Lazaro Cardenas has English lip-syncing in the front of the club and Spanish in the back. It’s not professional but it’s definitely engaging and amusing.

We’ve been told the Luna Lounge in Bucerias is also very good. Grab an Uber or Taxi and take the trip north for some extra special fun. There are lots of great dinner places in Bucerias, too, so you can make a night of it.

Check out the local papers for times and locations and book tickets without delay once you arrive in Puerto Vallarta. Cassandra Shaw’s Jewelry on Basilio Badillo pins up posters of all the local acts and they also sell tickets for certain events and performances.
