  • Road Assistance Has A Color In Vallarta, Green

Angels on the Road to Puerto Vallarta: Snowbirds are returning to Mexico this time of year and many will be on the path to Puerto Vallarta. Expats who live here during the winter and early spring come from all over the United States and Canada. Each party will claim their chosen route the best, their choice of crossing the easiest, and their method of travel the quickest or most leisurely. They’re all fine as long as you use common sense.

RV travelers are known to caravan to Puerto Vallarta, stopping in groups, pouring cocktails, and discussing whose GPS system is superior. This is a practical way to travel though it’s not cheap; big rigs require a lot more fuel and can’t zip along quite as fast. What’s saved in gasoline however, can be made up for in cooking on the spot. When you travel with your kitchen, you save money on eating out.

Pulling trailers behind vehicles calls for twice the licensing and added expenses, such as insurance and equipment, plus extra fuel costs. Minivans are great for stuffing to the rims. When headed to Puerto Vallarta, a car will suffice, as long as you’re not determined to drag along everything from up north, short of that handy kitchen sink.

What happens to vehicles if they break down on the long journey to Puerto Vallarta? There’s no reason to despair. If you’re experiencing problems, pull over and raise your hood. If you’ve driven the highways of Mexico, you have seen the Green Angels, who park under overpasses along the toll roads; they will come to your rescue.Ángeles Verdes are a government sponsored AAA, the guardians of road travelers, patrolling all federal and toll highways throughout the country. They’re sometimes bi-lingual, though mechanical failures don’t regularly entail language barriers. They will provide first aid if needed and gladly supply everything from cold water to promos for tourist attractions. Chiefly, they will help with your crisis, or tow you to the nearest mechanic. One thing you can be sure of in Mexico is that if you do have a breakdown, someone will phone in your location. You can do it, too, by calling 078 from any phone.

The Mexican Tourism Ministry offers this service to all motorists, no matter where you’re from, and there’s no charge. They bring spare parts, a variety of tools and friendly mechanics. If you need major parts, that’s your responsibility but they will tow you to the next available service station regardless of distance. Tipping is appreciated and recommended, and the amount is up to you. We suggest generosity in the face of immense gratitude.

If you read your toll receipts you’ll see contact information for the Green Angels printed at the bottom of every one.

  • Vallarta: Jelly Fish Remedies

    Jelly Fish

The ocean water in Puerto Vallarta is visited by jelly fish seasonally. Whereas some types of jelly fish are indigenous around the globe, we are simply a tourist destination for a couple of the species, some harmful.

What do they look like? If you see a gelatinous blue blob on the sand while you’re walking down the beach in Puerto Vallarta and surrounding areas, avoid it and keep your eyes peeled for more. They can be very painful, even when they seem to be dead. We’ve heard them called Blue Devil, which is an appropriate label, since they will feel like you’ve stepped into a bit of hell.

Once you’ve been stung, it can take a long time for the pain to dissipate.  The pain and scarring varies from person to person but we have heard of some having sensitivity for weeks following the original injury. We’ve also had friends who’ve been stung and were hardly bothered at all, considering it little more than an annoyance.

For remedies, there are many, some absurd but worth trying. Don’t ever rub the area of the sting, especially if there are bits of jelly fish. Get it as wet as possible, using seawater and rinse it off, pouring copious amounts of water on the skin to shed any remnants of the animal.

If you have any kind of allergic reaction, get to an emergency room immediately. Swelling of the skin; hives; difficulty in swallowing or breathing indicate a serious reaction and can be extremely dangerous. We’ve been asked many times if urinating on the stings helps and we can attest to the fact that we’ve seen it work when other solutions fall short. It is worth a try, urine is clean, and make sure it’s your own and not someone else’s.

There is a cure that locals and residents claim is the best remedy and it’s not a bad idea to add it to the beach first aid kit: unflavored meat tenderizer. Pour seawater on the aggravated spot with generous amounts of tenderizer.  Let it soak in and the jellyfish bits should dissolve. Continue to rinse with seawater. Follow this with ice cold fresh water and coat with any type of cream that contains benzocaine.

If we see jellyfish on the beach, we stay out of the water in that specific area. The invasion of these creatures is an off and on event for the first few weeks in the summer but you can find beaches in Puerto Vallarta that are not affected, since jellyfish tend to float with currents so they can pass by huge swatches. It’s still safe to go into the water.

  • Vallarta Inspired Living News Chili Cook Off

    Puerto Vallarta Chili Cook-Off

Many years ago, when we first arrived in Puerto Vallarta, an event enlightened us to the camaraderie of the expat group, as no other had. This wasn’t drinks at a beach bar. This was a small sector of the population coming together to make a statement. A delightful chili cook-off with colorful characters and a sizeable, impressive donation to a local non-profit for animals. The gathering indicated not just friendship but a real sense of community. This event disappeared, much to our dismay, but returned about seven years ago at the El Rio BBQ Bar in Paso Ancho, a perfect location for the gathering. Last year’s Puerto Vallarta Chili Cook-Off, co-hosted by Kurt Sinner, owner of El Rio; the Puerto Vallarta’s American Legion Post 14; and The Jay Sadler Project, an officially recognized non-profit organization in the State of Jalisco, attracted over six hundred attendees. As popular events in any given city tend to do, this one has outgrown its shoes and finds itself again, in a new location for 2020.

Parque Parota in Fluvial Vallarta, at 48320 Av. Francisco Medina Ascencio, is just north of the Marbella complex, in the huge lot where carnivals take up residence every now and again. Any bus going in the direction of Wal-Mart will drop you off at the main entrance.

It’s a very good idea to get an advanced ticket, which are available in several locations in Puerto Vallarta, since it will save you $50 pesos off the at-gate price and allow early entrance at 11:30 am. Tickets at the gate will be $300 pesos and entrance will be at 12 noon. You can also buy tickets online at eventbrite.com.

Twenty or so chili vendors will be judged by local food critics and restaurateurs. The public will also have the opportunity to serve as judges, with a popular vote.

Along with chili, there will be several other types of food available, including but not limited to seafood, tacos, ice cream and cupcakes from various local vendors and restaurants. We’re excited about the music, which is always a treat in Puerto Vallarta, where we have some incredibly talented musicians and entertainers. Along with a beer garden, there will be martini bars, a Bloody Mary bar, and cocktail lounge.

The Silent Auction has always been a big attraction at the Chili Cook-Off and this year is no exception, with the usual donations made from generous establishments around town, plus a few new contributors. This year’s Puerto Vallarta Chili Cook-Off will be held from 11:30 am – 7 Pm on February 22, 2020.

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Turibus

    Turibus Puerto Vallarta

A thrilling new venture will begin in Puerto Vallarta this month and we couldn’t be more excited. We already know Turibus in Mexico City and other Mexican cities is a great way to see sites and get around, and have often wished for such an option for our tourist friends here in Puerto Vallarta. Turibus is a great way to learn about the city; the bilingual guides use both English and Spanish in their patter. It will be a very inexpensive trip in Puerto Vallarta, though much shorter, of course, than Mexico City. Nothing ventured, nothing gained is our way of looking at this new enterprise and we are eager to experience the ride ourselves. Our sources tell us Turibuses will begin this week with four buses and expand to two more as tourism ramps up.
To get a good head start on high season, the inauguration will be 16 August. Tickets are purchased upon embarking for $85 pesos/person; the ride lasts about forty minutes and covers El Centro and Zona Romatica. Catch it in front of the MacDonald’s at the north end of the Malecon on 31 Octobre Street.
Being on a Turibus gives you a good vantage point and helps you decide what attractions to go back and spend more time on later. It’s a perfect way to start your stay in Puerto Vallarta, get the lay of the land, plus a convenient history lesson. It will help orient you to the city, it’s safer and much less stressful than taxis, no crowding like on a standard city bus, and as an added bonus… you can see where you’re going. If you sit on the upper deck, we recommend a hat and sunscreen.
This is a big boost for Puerto Vallarta on the whole. For investors to have this kind of faith in the economy is very good for future developments and attractions in Puerto Vallarta and stabilizes businesses and real estate ventures that are already here. Turibus operates in many Mexico locations, as well as international destinations, giving further draw to the area. Once they are established, Turibus Puerto Vallarta will be adding routes from hotels and various points of interest with emphasis on the historical center of town.

Before moving to Puerto Vallarta in 1999, the president and founder of one of the fastest growing real estate agencies in the city worked as an agent for Prudential Realty in Beverly Hills. By then, he already had several years of experience in the business and had a rising and prosperous career. In fact, his last sale in the wealthy California market was the largest transaction recorded that year: a residence acquired by artist and music producer Babyface. So, what made him move to Mexico? The answer involves an opportunity, discovering a promising real estate sector and encountering a lifestyle that he defines as “inspiring.

  • 2018 ‘House Hunters International’ Disco Ball

$664,369 Pesos Raised For Vallarta Charities

The Disco Ball was the night to remember! The glittery 2018 ‘House Hunters International’ charity event lit up the perfect Vallarta night sky Tuesday, November 20th at the beautiful beachfront Oscar’s Restaurant on the Cuale River Island. This marked the fourth fundraiser event hosted by Taniel Chemsian and number one real estate brokerage house, Timothy Real Estate Group. Filled with disco era celebrity impersonators by the likes of the Village People and Sonny & Cher, the Sold Out event raised a record-breaking $664,369 Peso for benefactors Asilo San Juan Diego (Senior Assisted Living Center) and SETAC Community Health Center.

“We couldn’t be happier with how the evening turned out. Our generous friends and local businesses pulled out all the stops in support of these non-profit organizations that are so vital to our community,” said Carl Timothy, owner of Timothy Real Estate Group. “We couldn’t have done it without the support and commitment of our wonderful donors, the professional staff at Oscar’s and the local community. A big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who helped make The Disco Ball a complete success.”

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Extranjera

    Extranjera Experience
Puerto Vallarta has a great event in store for women living, or considering living in Puerto Vallarta. This event from July 12 to 14, 2019 is all about community connections for those living in Puerto Vallarta, short and long term. Extranjera translates to female foreigner, therefore it encompasses many people, even women who are nationals but have been living out of the country and thinking about relocating back home. The concept is about learning from one another, and the planners aren’t calling it a conference, retreat, meet-up or networking event, but perhaps a combination of all these things, with yoga sessions, planned walks, massage therapy sessions, cocktail hours, and dinners. Extranjera Experience kicks off with an opening circle and welcome dinner on July 12 at 6:30 pm, exact location at Parque Fluvial to be announced to entrants.
There will be conversations, presentations, and educational sessions regarding topics about what it’s like for a foreign woman to live in a place like Puerto Vallarta. Extranjera Experience will also present subjects specific to the area, and as an added bonus, spa treatments and yoga. After your confirmation and a paid deposit, a full schedule will be provided. We understand that Vallarta CoWork will be their home base, with speakers and panels arranged.
This sounds like a great networking opportunity for women in Puerto Vallarta. We recall decades ago when women were organized in a network that eventually brought some incredible people together, men and women alike, embracing everyone, with a great emphasis on the LBTGQ community, as well.
Excellent and informative speakers have been scheduled throughout the weekend and six fantastic meals will be provided (two breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners).
An event in Puerto Vallarta wouldn’t be the same without a raffle of fabulous prizes, specific to extranjeras and Puerto Vallarta, with a percentage of the contributions going to a local charity. The weekend will wind up on Sunday with a closing circle during lunch and a pool party following at Experience Central in Fluvial.
For more details and to find your application and payment information for attendance, go to https://joyandjourney.com. Tickets are $2500 pesos for the event, require a $500 peso deposit; there is early bird pricing until June 1. It sounds like a real deal.

  • Vallarta Real Estate Inspired Living: Geckos

    Love Our Geckos!

Our first experience with geckos in Puerto Vallarta began as an annoying clicking that we thought was someone monkeying around with our window latch. We got up and stumbled around in the dark, saw nothing disturbing and went back to bed. Not to sleep. The clicking continued. In time, we learned the annoyance came from a tiny creature called a gecko. Now we sleep through the night with the same comfort as Grandma’s ticking clock in the echoing foyer, knowing that everything is as it should be. Geckos are out hunting in the dark and still of the night, capturing mosquitoes and other bothersome bugs.

There are many definitions for gecko sounds and logical explanations for them. Scientists have had a lot of fun observing geckos and attempting to explain their social interactions. The geckos you hear in Puerto Vallarta chirp, bark, click, etc to deflect other males, attract females, fight, flirt, announce and claim their territory, and perhaps throw a fiesta for reasons known only to geckos. We have turned on the light at night to see as many as a half dozen on our ceilings and walls.

Geckos are only fearsome to the insects they devour and we are eternally thankful for this. Though one mosquito may do great harm to us, a gecko simply sees him as an appetizer. Geckos eat insects much larger than themselves and if you’re interested in going beyond the images of your own imagination, check out youtube for dramatic videos.

We have been startled during daylight hours when moving furniture or art on the wall, to have a gecko run out with great urgency to locate another hiding place. It is our nature to apologize. Cats will go after geckos, and since cats have nocturnal tendencies, we try to keep Fluffy cornered in bed with us, though it doesn’t always work. Cats will only eat the bodies and leave the head of a gecko for your astonishment in the morning. Geckos in Puerto Vallarta can be seen during the day; they are not strictly nocturnal, but it’s a rare occurrence to see them on a bright sunny day.

If you try to catch a gecko, we must advise against keeping them as pets. Instead consider them your own personal pets who are allowed to roam your home, much like cats do, with no boundaries. You will, in fact, most likely be left holding a wriggling tail, while the rest of the gecko escapes. Not to worry. Geckos are built to be able to release their tail along an actual predestined line, which allows them to flee quickly with nominal harm to the remainder of their body. In their own milieu, the continued thrashing of the tail provides distraction from a predator and allows the gecko to hide once again.

Geckos can live a long time in Puerto Vallarta, up to five years in the wild. So keep them around; they are considered good luck and nothing seems better than old wise geckos protecting us at night.

Fun for the Younger Set in Puerto Vallarta:  Puerto Vallarta is visited by thousands of people every year; many of these visitors are young and looking for fun and a good time.  This great Mexico beach destination has countless activities and places for every mood and budget.  It’s not necessary to spend much to have a good time.  Here are some great options for some inexpensive fun and good food.

Let’s begin with some restaurants; these will give you a good feel for Mexican cuisine at a very reasonable price.

“El Coleguita” is one of the most popular seafood restaurants in Vallarta.  Located in the Marina, with a great ambiance and view overlooking the pier. The portions are very large, enough for 2 people to share.

“Pinocchio’s”, it’s “the place” to enjoy a delicious pizza or pasta.  It is located next to the bridge that connects the Malecon to Los Muertos beach, simply tasty.

“Takos Pancho’s” The traditional flavor of Mexican Tacos.  Look for them on Basilio Badillo Street almost on the corner of Olas Alas street.

There are a few Japanese restaurants in Vallarta with good cuisine, and a variety of dishes.  “Kashi Sushi” has great prices, along with quality food and service. ¨Kashi Sushi¨ is located near the “Stadium”, 3 blocks away from the main road on Olas Altas.

If one of your favorite things when you visit Mexico is the food, there’re two places that you have to visit.  We call them “fonditas”, the first one. “El Rinconcito” is open for breakfast and lunch, and has great food. They deliver (if you’re near their location).  The second, “Dianita’s” here you’ll surely find nice local people to meet and talk to, it’s the favorite of many.  They have a great variety and different menu every day. Typical home made food with a great price. Find them in the Romantic Zone on the corner of Ignacio Vallarta and Francisco Madero.

Now, we have recommendations of bars and clubs so you can hang out, have a drink, and dance.

If you’re in the mood for being on the beach with a chair and a drink in your hand, you have to visit “Lido Beach Club”.  You are sure to have a relaxing time, listening music and looking at the ocean from under your umbrella.  Located on Los Muertos beach.

“Paradise Burger” on the Malecon is the perfect place to be any evening sitting on the balcony, enjoying a drink and live music.

“Iris Pub” is a good place to hang out with your friends. It’s a kind of alternative/rock place. Start your night having a beer and playing pool while you listen to a live local rock band.  Also located on the Malecon.

“La Noche” is a fun alternative, great drinks and good music.  Located on Francisco I. Madero street in the Romantic Zone.

“Party Lounge” is always an excellent time. Here you can drink, dance and have a great time.  Located across the street from Hidalgo Park, one block from the beginning of the Malecon.

Two other options, of the many you will find on the Malecon of Puerto Vallarta are “The Zoo” and “La Vaquita”.  Prices here are a little bit higher, but you are sure to have a fun time.

“CC Slaughter” has DJ mixed music all night.  With music and a beer in your hand you’ll be in the mood for dancing.  Located on Ignacio L. Vallarta.

In this amazing paradise called Puerto Vallarta there are a lot places to do anything you can imagine. We recommend you do your homework and look up places you might be interested in.  It’s always good to do something different than your usual.

If you know cool places where our friends can eat and have fun leave a comment.  We would like to know where you have been.

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: The Mighty Avocado

    The Mighty Avocado

Avocado toast is all the rage north of the border but it’s been a staple here in Puerto Vallarta for as long as we can remember. Some smart person suddenly thought of this new use for avocadoes and it now appears on breakfast menus in small cafés to fine restaurants.
It’s a simple recipe: Toast bread to your liking; halve an avocado and remove the seed; while the toast is hot, straight out of the toaster, lightly rub the surface with the cut side of a garlic clove. Then use a spoon to scoop out the meat of the avocado; with a fork, spread it onto the toast. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper and voila! Breakfast! Tasty and nutritional.
Little did we know there are over five hundred varieties of avocado on this planet! Though they are considered fruit, most North Americans call them vegetable. Avocado is derived from the word ahuacatl, Aztec for testicle. Along with other foods that resemble reproductive parts of the human body, it’s thought to be an aphrodisiac. Once you realize the Aztec word for soup is molli, you can almost see where the word guacamole came from. With their reptile like outer surface, avocadoes are known in some countries as alligator pears.
Avocados are first foods in countries from where they originate. Easily digestible, they are packed with fiber, loaded with potassium and high in vitamins B and C. Avocadoes have the good kind of cholesterol that increases HDL (high density lipoprotein), responsible for good digestion.
As a best food for vegetarian and vegan diets, avocadoes are dairy and gluten free. They are ready to eat when they have a soft, ripe feel to the touch and turn dark in color. To speed up ripening, they can be put in a drawer or a brown paper bag. Add a banana to the cluster and it will hurry up the process.
A bowl of guacamole is where many ripe avocadoes end up in Puerto Vallarta and we never get tired of watching it made in a molcajete, tableside. The molcajete is a stone bowl with a surface perfect for grinding with the blunt tool called tejolote. The molcajete is the Mexican version of a mortar and pestle.
To make your own guacamole at home, use one avocado for every two diners, scoop out the inside and mash with a fork. Don’t use a blender or whipping tools, as you want it to be chunky. It would end up watery if you beat it too much. For simple guacamole, ready to eat in minutes, squeeze the juice of a lime, add salt to taste and mix with a fork. Scoop with chips or plop onto a pile of nachos. For a different twist you can add onions, tomatoes, cucumber or zucchini.
