    Clean It Up!

    One great thing about Puerto Vallarta is the expat effort to contribute to the community. There are many events, including planting flowers, food drives for orphanages, shelters and animal rescue groups. One of our favorites, because it has such an immediate impact, is the endeavor to keep the streets clean. There are several groups gathering energy to collect trash and they’re getting a fair amount of media coverage, as well.

     

    We are thrilled to see new groups spring up from time to time, and the latest is the Colonia Clean-Up – Emiliano Zapata, doing their part in Colonia Emiliano Zapata. They had a very successful crowd last month and are scheduled for another clean-up on August 4, which is a Saturday. Anyone can join in to help out, and they plan to extend this into high season, meeting every first Saturday.

     

    The meeting point is at Lazaro Cardenas 421. That’s between Calles Aguacate and Jacarandas. They start at 9:30 am and go until 11:30 am, meeting back at the starting point for lunch and beverages, which are provided by the organizers. You can find a link on Facebook to let them know you’ll be there, so they have somewhat of a head count.

    Colonia Clean-Up will provide garbage bags, tongs, and gloves. Each person or team is assigned a specific are, all within the border of the colonia’s streets. If you want to be super efficient, you can divide recycle from garbage, and even separate plastic from aluminum cans.

     

    Some of us would really like to help with this great community contribution but can’t deal with the heat, don’t do well walking the sometimes tough cobblestone streets, maneuvering the curbs and sidewalks. We know people who love to help in any way they can but aren’t in town. For those who want to make a donation, $100 pesos will hire a neighborhood kid to represent you (only you will be aware of this representative, but everyone loves the kids being a part of the movement).     The Incredible Maple Forest of Talpa

    The lovely village of Talpa, east of Puerto Vallarta, is a wonderful getaway for a weekend or midweek for those of us without constraints. Though we have driven through, stopped for meals, shopped and even spent a night or two, it was a great surprise to learn about La Cumbre, a forest that is only a short distance above Talpa. Unexpectedly, we came across a fir, maple, conifer wooded area that has puzzled botanists for some time, due to their strength of survival, and mysterious location. Trees and plants in this setting have been traced back to the Pleistocene and Tertiary eras. This flora has survived and integrated itself into its surroundings for millions of years. La Cumbre can be found in the El Refugio arroyo, deeply veiled by the growth around it.

    This is an adventure for medium to serious hikers. Long pants and sleeves are advised, as well as sturdy shoes. Going this time of year is ideal because the rains will have washed away dust and fed new growth. To get to there from Puerto Vallarta, travel from Mascota, then southwest through the town of Talpa, and follow the paved road to Tomatlán. Keep track on your odometer and when you are approximately 27 kilometers up, look for a sign; not highly visible, that says Bosque de Maple. It’s a dirt road and you need to proceed for about five kilometers to a trailhead that has no evident marking but you’ll know when you see it. You are now in the cloud forest; carry on in a northeast direction. If you do some scouting around and you’ll easily find the camping area. It’s a dreamy space with evidence of previous visitors.

    Remember to not leave a trace. Whatever you pack in, you pack out. Respect the wildlife. Be considerate of other visitors, but this is Mexico, so you can expect most people to be friendly. We can’t stress enough how unusual it is to find Sugar Maples in a Cloud Forest in Mexico! Botanists have ventured into the region  since this discovery in the late 1990’s to marvel at what is ordinary in Vermont, Wisconsin and Ontario but seemingly miraculous such a short distance from Puerto Vallarta in the mountains of Jalisco.  It is unfortunate that the area remains unprotected by the government and some activism could help to change this, especially with a new administration. At this time it is victim to everyone from the CFE (Federal Electric Commission) to wandering cattle, illicit marijuana farmers, vandals and loggers. There is really nothing the likes of this enchanted hiker/botanist’s dream. It has survived mother nature and human ignorance but we recommend planning a trip, before someone decides it’s off limits.

    Getting Around

    Do you need a car in Puerto Vallarta? That’s very debatable, and the opinions on this issue are as varied as the assorted experiences.
    We’ve known many expats who’ve driven their US and Canadian cars to Puerto Vallarta and gone through the arduous process of getting them “Mexicanized.” We’ve done this ourselves with three separate vehicles over the years. If you love your car that much, then do it, but we have learned to purchase autos locally. If you’re only here for six months and plan to cross the border again to the north in 180 days, you can ignore the above.
    A huge difference for us was the arrival of Uber in Puerto Vallarta, however we try to use all modes of transportation equally; bus, taxi and Uber. Buses are cheap and they go just about everywhere within Puerto Vallarta proper. Buses also go to places outside the city limits that we’re still in the process of discovering.
    Some taxis and Ubers won’t allow dogs in their cars. We can’t blame them in certain cases. We have a friend who was very upset when a taxi wouldn’t allow her to bring an injured, bleeding animal in the back seat, demanding a ride to a veterinarian clinic. We came to her rescue at the time and supplied old sheets, which we always have in the vehicle to save the upholstery. Most taxis and Ubers in Puerto Vallarta have no problem letting pets ride along. We’ve advised friends coming from the beach to be respectful and not hail a taxi when you are covered in sand and dripping wet. Use common sense.
    Buses don’t have chicken crates and pigs on rope-leashes as they did years ago. No holes in the floorboards to see the road passing beneath your feet. Some buses even have AC these days! Entertainment is available, as well, especially on long routes, south to Boca de Tomatlan, for example, or north to the Marina. Minstrels of all ages with instruments as diverse as guitars or two sticks beat together will board, sing and play, then walk down the aisle with an open palm. We recommend a small offering, in hopes they will proceed to the next bus down the line.
    Uber has been a life-saver for many who reside away from bus lines or without close access to taxis. Uber can find you regardless of where you call from and they’ll drop you at your desired destination. With the simple installation on your phone and attachment to a payment source (we use PayPal), you have a great alternative. We have found Uber cars to be clean, modern, and more often than not driven by English speaking Mexicans.
    Costs for these methods are low. If you want to go carless in Puerto Vallarta, it’s inexpensive and easy-peasy. You also support the local economy.

    Social media has given new life to people who love gossip. There are countless sites to look up news about anyplace in the world but it’s important to crosscheck, investigate, and do your own research when it comes to rumors.

    In recent months, Puerto Vallarta has been touted as the safest tourist destination in all of Mexico.  Though reports have claimed there is heightened security, we haven’t noticed any differences over the years, nor have we ever felt unsafe here. Common sense is always the way to go. There isn’t any reason to believe that traveling to Puerto Vallarta is any different than other destinations in the world. We’ve always joked about the most dangerous part of visiting Puerto Vallarta is getting through the timeshare gauntlet leaving the airport. But even that is an opinionated rumor. Timeshares give a lot of support to our local economy, we have many friends who love owning them, and further, we have friends who work in the timeshare business.

    Over the years we’ve heard all types of rumors but most of them come from wild imaginations that have been exposed to thriller movies and think someone’s creative tale was based on fact. On the other hand, there have been movies filmed right here in Puerto Vallarta and some visitors are intent on revisiting the locations they thought they saw in a film. Some movies, like Beverly Hills Chihuahua show off Puerto Vallarta with lovely backgrounds and street setting. Terminator takes place in the jungle, which is almost inaccessible for the exception of a highly embellished movie set known as El Eden, several kilometers above the small village of Mismaloya. It’s all fantasy, except for the backdrop.

    TV shows that revolve around people buying real estate can make an impression on those who plan to visit. Some might think we all live in mansions here in Puerto Vallarta. There are definitely some incredible view homes, but there are also many more humble and very affordable dwellings.

    For the most part, Puerto Vallarta is as uneventful as a sleepy rural village. We do have our share of parades, festivals, charity and sports events, bike and foot races and an occasional film being made, but we if you’re looking for the type of excitement you see on television, you probably will need to go to Hollywood.

  • Get Out And Hike Vallarta

    Hiking to Las Animas

    Las Animas is a coastal village that’s lively during the day when tourists swarm the beaches, and quiet at night when residents breathe a sigh of relief until the next morning when they open their welcome arms to people who keep the commerce going.

    The best thing about hiking from Puerto Vallarta to Las Animas is what you’ll discover at the end.  Beach restaurants, up and down the shoreline, offer Mexican dishes at slightly higher prices than what one would expect to find in Puerto Vallarta. All food and supplies are brought to Las Animas by boat, adding a premium to purchases.

    There are two ways to get to Las Animas from Puerto Vallarta and we prefer the hike, which has become very popular over the past five or six years. Once was a time when you could walk the entire trail and not see a soul; these days there’s an abundance of travelers along the path, giving an air of camaraderie and liveliness. The water taxi from Boca de Tomatlan begins runs at 8 am, costs $50 pesos and takes about twenty minutes. If you take the bus to Boca, get off at the top of the highway; it’s the last stop. Parking is mostly free, but we never mind paying the $50 pesos to park in a family owned lot just steps away from the beach. There are also water taxis leaving from the pier in Puerto Vallarta where you can purchase round-trip tickets. If choosing this route, we always suggest arranging these the day before to beat the crowds in the morning.

    Wear sneakers. This is not a journey for flip flops or sandals. Be aware of your step and mindful that there will be slippery spots, especially following a rainfall.  Steps are carved out of the hillside is some places and it’s prone to be loose and unstable. Be careful to stay away from ledges that can give way, and stick to the inside of the path. Wal-Mart and Costco in Puerto Vallarta have been known to sell walking sticks and we highly recommend them as they add steadiness and a little extra bit of confidence. Handrails exist in some areas but we don’t depend on them.

    For those seeking more adventure, it’s 90 minutes further to Quimixto, where waterfalls and fresh water swimming await. Simply stay on the path along the seaway and it will take you there.

    In both villages there are locals with large snakes, iguanas and parrots who wander through café tables, willing to allow photos to be taken with their pets. Please give them at least $50 pesos for this photo op and remember this is the jungle. If you’re afraid of these animals, keep your distance and wits about you. This is their natural setting.

    Unless you’ve decided to hike on your return to Boca, don’t miss the boat back! Make sure you keep an eye on the time; the last boat usually leaves at 6 pm and there are few places to board for the night.

    This is for the gents who want to experience luxury and pampering for a very small price. For less than $10 USD, you can get a hot towel, traditional facial shave in Puerto Vallarta. It’s an experience that might change your attitude about indulgence.

    Why get a hot towel shave in Puerto Vallarta? Primarily, as far as we’re concerned, it’s about relaxation and doing something for you! A shave at home in the morning usually takes about three to five minutes, depending on trimming of beards and moustaches. Nicks are common, blades are often dulled from use and after-shave tenderness is normal. Using inferior products, soaps, and aftershave is just not smart. It’s your face; the only one you have. Give it some love. We recommend at least once a week.

    When you get a hot towel shave in Puerto Vallarta, the beard is softened, you get a closer shave and the pores open up, leaving less irritation.

    Some shops in Puerto Vallarta use traditional straight razors, while others use safety razors, with disposable blades. These edges are extremely sharp, making it possible to get very close. Disposable razors, the kind you usually have when traveling, are lightweight and the quality of the blade is lacking. A straight razor shave is going to be much closer, and make you face feel like a newborn baby; it will be smooth and last longer.

    Barbers sanitize hair clippers, scissors, blades and other tools, which is something we don’t do at home. Bacteria can occur on the skin at anytime and even the smallest abrasion can cause an infection, which explains some of the skin eruptions you get when you do quick shaves at home.

    Barbers in Puerto Vallarta are known for their great hairstyling; the cost of a shave and haircut is usually in the vicinity of $15 USD. These artists are great at styling moustaches, beards, and for a small added cost will clean up those bushy eyebrows, too.

    Walking down the streets of anywhere in Puerto Vallarta… Old Town, El Centro, Pitillal, or at one of the modern malls, you’re sure to find excellent barbershops, both modern and very traditional.

    You’ll find that barbershops in Puerto Vallarta offer complimentary cold beer or full bar. Nothing like a gin and tonic to go with your shave and haircut!

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Environmental Issues

    Environmental Issues in Puerto Vallarta

    When we decide to live here, we must be a part of the effort to face serious issues. Any fool knows there is no such thing as true paradise but we can do our best to help it be as perfect as possible. The water issues facing Puerto Vallarta are something we join the effort to do something about. Sustainability is just as possible and affordable here in Puerto Vallarta as other parts of the planet. A few months ago a project got underway to dam the El Río Los Horcones and divert the water along a pipeline to a power plant. If you’ve been held up on the highway by protests, this is what the uproar is about. Besides the fact there is no environmental impact statement to be found, nor any studies done to provide answers to what will happen to the population in the area, no one has even let the villagers know what the outcome or consequences will be. Nor have any other residents been informed. It has been only through the diligence of a couple concerned citizens that attention has been brought to this dilemma.
    In another matter, raw sewage has spewed into El Estero El Salado, with warnings to not swim near the area. This is the only registered preserve in Puerto Vallarta and some peple depend on the seafood that is linked to those waters, which cannot be eaten until this is cleaned up, with no idea as to when that might occur, not to mention the lack of control over the pipelines that cause these problems in the first place.
    This isn’t the complete fault of all the new construction in Puerto Vallarta. Nature has played her part, as well. Until this past Sunday July 7, the normal gully washers that Puerto Vallarta looks forward to every summer, which cool the air and raise the level of reserves, have been absent. Global warming is no joke, no matter how uneducated one chooses to be regarding the matter. It is beginning to have major impact on our lives. Local water reserves are at an historic low, and water service outages are planned for Puerto Vallarta, with reasons being given as routine maintenance. Anyone who’s paid any attention to this issue knows that this is abnormal. Proper management is part and parcel to the problem.
    What can you do? Letters to local papers are sincerely invited, as well as contacting representatives with your concerns. Right to assemble laws are different in Mexico, so be careful when joining protests; find out who the organizers are and what it allowed within the law. Participate to the level you can legally do so. Most of all, conserve. Be aware and alert when it comes to your own water usage and environmental concerns.

    Puerto Bazar at Biblioteca Los Mangos

    In an old mango orchard in Puerto Vallarta, on Avenida Francisco Villa a dream came true when the library was built with the help of community support. Opened in November of 1996 and host to guests of many countries, there are books in English, Spanish and other languages. Audio and visual services are also available. Free to the public and those who live in Puerto Vallarta (even short-timers) can get a library card. Your passport and a copy of a utility bill is all you need.

    We pass along our used books to the library once we find we have a bit of a pile, and they always receive them with gratefulness and a big smile. If you have books gathering dust and at risk of mildew, get them to the biblioteca, where they will lovingly lend and take care of them. They accept books in all languages.

    You’ll find other things happening in and around this rustic building. Ballet classes, piano, yoga, sculpture and painting classes; all very affordable. Cultural activities, art shows and community events take place inside and out on the expansive lawn.

    This weekend, March 16th and 17th, you won’t want to miss the Third Annual Puerto Bazar at Biblioteca Los Mangos! Here is a chance to get some Mexican coolture. There will be entrepreneurs from Puerto Vallarta and surrounding areas, showing off art, design, music, dance and a diversity of many talents. Some contributors will include Sandy Ideas; Peekabow Mx; Je Suis; JUST-Alma PV; Little Maravillas; Sunflower Beuaty Care; Hilo & el Mar; ZARU Catering & Eventos, plus many more.

    Entrance is free, with a selection of delicious food and drinks for sale. There will be family workshops, continual shows throughout the day, and something for everyone. It’s a relaxing place to be on the weekend, away from the crowds and hubbub. You can bring dogs, too, but please keep them on leash.

    The Library is located at Avenida Francisco Villa 1000, Colonia Los Mangos. Busses, taxis and Uber will all know this destination, just south of Costco.

    The Beef Dip is allegedly the hottest gay event in Puerto Vallarta of the year…for bears. Bears aren’t just big hairy, beefy guys from Chicago. They are any gay man who wants to join in on the funnest time a guy can have in Puerto Vallarta. Thousands of bears may be an exaggeration but in truth you can expect to see hundreds joining the Beef Dip, seven straight days of party, party, party. The dates are Sunday January 26th – Sunday February 2nd, 2020 and if you’re not booked yet, there is still time! There will be cruises, circuit parties with dancing going all through the night, an official Beef Dip Pub Crawl. Also on the agenda are a SPLASH pool party, beach BBQ, and booze cruise. For those still up to it, there will be a wild trek ATV tour, canopy zipline, and the week will close with a White Winter Party, which will give everyone a chance to get dressed up, rather than dressed down!

    An official welcoming party at The Blue Chairs resort from 3 – 9 pm on Day One starts the week of events with complimentary appetizers and a complimentary special Beef Dip margarita. Hosts will be available to answer questions in English and Spanish; everyone will get to check out new and seasoned bears, cubs and their admirers. This is not an experience for only gay men. Anyone who wants to participate is welcome and it’s a guarantee of fun, fun, fun. The Blue Chairs is an old institution in Puerto Vallarta, with killer views from the top floor, where the welcoming/meet and greet party will be held. You will find your official dog tags there and all the necessary identifications, which will give you discounts to many of the establishments in downtown Puerto Vallarta. Don’t forget to bring your printed ticket and photo ID to get signed in properly. We’ve heard you should also be able to pick up your tags at any of the events.

    Two parties not to miss are the Wet and Wild pool party and the Big Beef Dipper Dinner Party. For the dinner, reservations are highly recommended; you wouldn’t want to miss out.

    Protect Yourself

    Recently someone posted on a well known Facebook thread, asking what type of protection they need in Puerto Vallarta. The responses, as usual, got out of hand and the thread had to be closed, due to nastiness on the part of some commentors. This is too bad because it’s an issue that should be addressed with finesse and logic.

    As we have said before in these guest columns, guns are not legal in Mexico. There is only one gun store in all of Mexico in the capitol, Mexico City. To purchase ammunition, one must go to a separate location. Can one still buy a gun in other places in Mexico? Sure, on the Black Market… it’s so verboten just thinking about it could get you deported. Shootings in Puerto Vallarta are rare. You are much more likely to die from being run over by a bus or taxi for not paying attention when you cross the street.

    Pepper spray was brought up in the conversation and there’s a debate as to whether it’s legal. It depends on who you talk to apparently, but the laws regarding its possession and use are shady and not concise. We recommend carrying a bottle of strong perfume. It’ll likely have the same affect.

    A local Mexican commented on the Facebook thread that it’s much safer in Puerto Vallarta, not only due to gun laws, but also because most people come here to have fun, not get into trouble. He also mentioned that Mexico doesn’t target particular racial groups, making them a target of violence. Everyone is welcome in Puerto Vallarta and all of Mexico.

    What should you do to protect yourself in Puerto Vallarta? Use common sense. Don’t flash wads of cash around and avoid carrying large amounts of money. Doesn’t this apply to anywhere you travel? Regarding comments about wearing expensive jewelry; it’s far better to have it on your person than leave it lying around. If you bring it, wear it.

    It’s really okay to stay out late and party, go dancing in the clubs, and get late-night tacos on the street. Once you’re ready to go home, walk on the main streets and know where you’re going. Use taxis; there are plenty around, even in the middle of the night. Uber is in Puerto Vallarta now and rides are extremely reasonable. Get the app on your phone before you come. If possible, move around town with friends.

    In the daytime, you are safer in Puerto Vallarta than just about anyplace we have ever been; but watch out for the aforementioned buses. If you’re alone, don’t drink so much it impairs your judgment. Keep a copy of your ID on you at all times and write down the address where you’re staying. Make yourself familiar with your surroundings so you don’t get lost. Be friendly. Speak a little Spanish.
