  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Dating Life

    Dating in Puerto Vallarta

In a recent survey, in which we asked what dating groups exist in Puerto Vallarta, we plenty of laughs, in return. It’s no secret; there are a lot of single people who have relocated to Puerto Vallarta. There’s also a lot of activity, even though a few want to scoff at the idea.

Some responses were made in jest, yet made a lot of sense. The beach came in first as a place to look for a date. This might work for the younger set, but older folks seem to prefer bars. And a bar on the beach hit the top of the list. Pubs, bars, taverns, saloons… they’ve all been primary meeting places for many who boast silver and golden wedding anniversaries, so those are not outlandish ideas.

We recommend joining groups, too. There are hiking tours, house tours, kayak and stand-up-paddle clubs. Tennis, anyone? Go hang out at the local courts and challenge someone to find a doubles partner. Yoga, the gym, dance classes. Our favorite place to meet people and as a bonus, learn the local language: Spanish classes.

There are some apps, and they’re the same as everywhere… match.com, for example. You can narrow down your location and easily seek someone who has recently moved to Puerto Vallarta or is visiting.

There’s a Facebook group with a set of criteria, which will make you feel like you’ve been interrogated, but you’ll also have more trust in anyone who decides to go through the same process. For this site, PV Singles, you must live in Puerto Vallarta at least one month out of the year. It is for single people only; there apparently have been some issues with this. The Facebook group made it clear that anyone who wants to join must be committed to looking for real connections, dating and love. Seems fair enough. You will fill out a complete and honest bio and there is a time limitation, so be prepared before you ask to be a member. You cannot reach out to other members of the group without the bio completed. The instructions clearly state that you can send each member one message and if they respond with interest you are welcome to continue communications. No spam or promotions are permitted. The admin will closely monitor this and is willing to discuss any events you might like to host. It doesn’t seem like a lot to ask to be kind and courteous, but we have found in the current culture, some people still need to be schooled in this. Lastly, they ask that you respect the privacy of others. Be sensitive to what you share in a group.
There are many opportunities to meet people in Puerto Vallarta. Good luck and, above all, have fun.

    International Friendship Club

The IFC, or in Spanish Club Internacional de la Amistad, is a great place to meet people if you’re new in town. For those interested in volunteer work the IFC is an outstanding prospect. The IFC has over one hundred members, who work to fund surgeries and several charities.

The IFC Home Tours are a pastime we highly recommend if you’ve not yet taken the opportunity. From November to April, generous home owners open their doors and privates spaces, with trips leaving twice a week (Tuesday and Wednesday) for the Sea Monkey restaurant on the Malecón at Calle Aquiles Serdan. You can order tickets ahead at ifctoursforvallarta.com. You can also offer your own home for participation in the Home Tours.

The IFC Home Tours are only one way the IFC raises money. All funds go to the IFC’s caring programs, chiefly among them the Cleft Palate Surgery and Clinic program, but also dental hygiene and educational programs, general financial assistance, and several Mexican charities that reach out to families in need. Among the areas that receive aid are the Clinica Santa Barbara de Rehabilitacion, a rehab center; Casa Hogar Maximo Cornejo, an orphanage; SETAC, our AIDS organization in Mexico; Pasito de Luz, a daycare for children in need of physical therapy and special attention; a new program at Biblioteca Los Mangos for parents and children to learn and increase reading skills; ant-venom and other medical supplies for communities with minimal medical services.

There are many IFC fundraising events throughout high season, ending with a grand brunch at a chosen restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, with a variety of local entertainment and a fabulous raffle. Prizes for the raffle are donated by many businesses around town, including but not limited to retail items and jewelry from local jewelers, passes of sailing and fishing trips, shows at local venues, massage and spa treatments, music and dance classes.

The IFC in Puerto Vallarta welcomes volunteers with professional expertise in medical, educational, and other fields and is always seeking supplies and equipment. All are welcome.

As a member of the Puerto Vallarta IFC, which is open to all who are looking for the chance to help with humanitarian causes, you will also attend some wonderful and entertaining social, educational and cultural activities, and receive significant discounts from restaurants and merchants in Puerto Vallarta.

The IFC Clubhouse is located above the HSBC bank where Insurgentes, Libertad and Miramar streets meet, on the north side of the Rio Cuale. Hours are 9 am – 3 pm, Monday – Friday, October – April, and May to July Monday – Thursday 9 am – 1:30 pm.

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Climate Awareness

    The Dead Zone

No, this blog isn’t about zombies. It actually covers a subject much more frightening than the walking dead of fiction. Though the Gulf of Mexico is on the opposite side of the country from Puerto Vallarta, what happens there does not stay there. The Dead Zone has a profound effect on all of us, no matter where we live in Mexico, or anywhere else in the world.
This summer of 2019 NOAA scientists have a dismal forecast for the Gulf. The “dead zone” or hypoxic zone in the Gulf of Mexico is one of low-to-zero oxygen, which kills marine life. It covers a land mass area about the size of the state of Massachusetts; approximately 7,829 square miles. The statistic derived from a yearly prediction founded on a U.S. Geological Survey of river flow and nutrient statistics.
Due to the extremely high spring rainfall in the Mississippi watershed this year, river flow spilling into the Gulf of Mexico is at an all time high. The result is an overgrowth of algae, which dies, sinks, and decomposes, bringing an outcome of low oxygen levels and lack of nourishment for marine life. The root cause is, of course, the result of human activities, urbanization, and agriculture; and even though these events occur annually, these record highs are great cause for concern.
Consider that the discharge into the tributary rivers has risen approximately 67% in less than four decades. With this flow, 156,000 metric tons of nitrate and 25,300 metric tons of phosphorus were dumped into the Gulf of Mexico in May 2018 alone. Pure poison to ocean flora and fauna.
While the assumption of forecasters rests on typical coastal weather patterns, typical simply doesn’t exist anymore. Hence predictions of disastrous results are difficult to measure. Wind events, tropical storms and hurricanes are not easy to give long range calculations but one thing is for certain; these events are likely to occur with an increase in frequency. In the bigger picture, this phenomenon is only going to occur more often and The Dead Zone will grow exponentially.
What can you do about it?
The simplest solutions are working on your own habits for the sustainability of your environment, regardless of whether you live, in Puerto Vallarta, elsewhere in Mexico, or the United States. The flow into the Gulf of Mexico originates in thirty-one states and two Canadian Provinces. Wherever you live, you must realize that your actions are long term and far reaching. Teach climate awareness to whoever will listen and do your part.

  • The ‘Must See Try’ Vendors of El Centro, Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta VendorsPuerto Vallarta is full of hidden treasures.  I love to find new and great food at an affordable price.  Below find some of my favorite places and best vendors in Puerto Vallarta to enjoy next time you are in El Centro.

    Tacos –

On the corner of Ignacio Vallarta and Francisco Madero by the Oxxo is a great taco vendor.  They have chicken, shrimp, and several kinds of beef.  Beef is easy to find, but to get all these options is a find!  Combined with a variety of condiments including salsas of every spice level, cheese, cilantro and my favorite grilled scallions make these tacos a must! They will always have specials, so be sure to ask.  This is a great lunch, dinner or late night stop.

    Quesadillas –

On Lazaro Cardenas and Insurgentes right outside of Farmacia Gudalajara is another great stand.  They have huge quesadillas on freshly made tortillas, mounds of cheese and chicken or beef.  One of my favorite things here is the spicy salsa, but beware it is HOT.  All the toppings and condiments you could want will make his a one of a kind quesadilla.  A great stop for dinner or a late night snack.

    Gringas –

On the corner of Ignacio Vallarta and Francisco Madero you will find a very small stand that does tacos and a very yummy Mexican specialty called gringas.  A gringa is two tortillas with pastor (slow cooked pork) and melted cheese in the middle.  Add all the condiments you want and this is a treat! Open most evenings and Late nights and maybe sometimes during the day.  Everyone should try a gringa here in Mexico so be sure to stop by.

    Fish / Shrimp –

At the end of Francisco Madero on the beach is a great fish and shrimp place.  Marlin, shrimp or both on a stick with their special sauce BBQéd right in front of you.  Add salt or lime if you choose, I like it without and enjoy walking the malecon with your lunch.  A great mid day snack or lunch.

    Omelets –

On Cinco de Febrero and Constitucion you can find an amazing omelet.  Enjoy with ham, veggies or chorizo with beans, veggies, jalapenos and tortillas on the side all for 30 pesos! Good food and a lot of it for a great price.  Great breakfast stop to get you going in the morning.

    Tortas –

On Caranza and Constitucion is a wonderful torta (sandwich)stop.  You can choose from chicken, pork or cheese all the meats are pulled and perfectly cooked in broth making them moist and delicious. Add veggies and any toppings you like. Tortas here in Mexico are popular for breakfast as well as lunch so this is a great mid day stop.  Enjoy a torta here with one of their great flavored watered and have a wonderful breakfast or lunch.

    I hope you enjoy!

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Santa Maria Del Oro

    Santa Maria del Oro
This time of year for those who live in Puerto Vallarta, the steamy weather makes us turn to higher altitudes and less heat. Santa Maria del Oro. This is definitely an overnighter, taking over three hours on the northern route to get there. We make it longer by stopping for lunch in one of the small villages we pass on the way, picking up novelties and snacks from roadside stands, and stopping to take photos of the breathtaking views. Mountains, valleys and forests are the awesome landscapes on this delightful journey.
There are several hotels in the area and we recommend booking ahead. Call on your own, visit websites or see a local travel agent in Puerto Vallarta. Worthy of mention is The Laguna de Santa Maria, a destination for those looking to relax in a quiet setting. Laguna de Santa Maria is a certified Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). Santa Maria Resort Boutique Collection offers forest cabins that face the lagoon and is graced by a restaurant, docks and a pool. Yemaya Adventure Club is exactly as the name implies, for those seeking activities and the energy to enjoy them. The surroundings of the lagoon entice the sport lover and the observer, with kayaking, paddle boarding, water skiing, bumper balls, swimming. There’s no need to bring your own equipment; everything you’ll need can be found at locations around the lagoon. There is no shortage of activities in the area, with horseback riding tours, zip-lines, cycling, mountain bikes, hiking, and rappelling.
The ubiquitous colorful letters that greet arrivals in all Mexican towns are in this case SAMAO. The magnificence of Santa Maria del Oro beckons you. If you’re looking for something different and a respite from the heat, we highly recommend this escape where you’ll be greeted by wildflowers, birds and butterflies. Whether it’s a challenging hike, a visit to the waterfalls, or a simple walk alongside the water, there is something for everyone.
A with most legends in Mexico, there’s always more than one story. One of those is the tale of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet from differing tribes, who were tied together. Held close but unable to touch, they cried tears that formed the lagoon. A deeper and actually plausible origin of the lagoon is that it’s a volcano crater. No one has ever tested the depth enough to know, and many believe it will take one to the center of the earth.
The lagoon’s water changes color with the seasons, moving from light turquoise to deep green, caused by alkaline and mineral levels.

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Speak English?

    Hablas Inglés?

Quite often when a person moves to Puerto Vallarta, they haven’t taken a grasp of the language, other than “cerveza, por favor” and “donde están los baños?” That’s loosely translated as “beer, please” and “where are the bathrooms?” We know about these things, as we were in the same boat misma barca many years ago. In the mid-90’s, it wasn’t easy to find Spanish classes in Puerto Vallarta, and online choices didn’t exist. We got our start at the International School of Friendship IFC, where excellent Spanish classes are still offered.

Until you learn some Spanish, you may spend a lot of time employing one phrase. “Hablas inglés?” translates to “can you speak English?” and unless you’re seated at a restaurant in town, patronized by tourists, you are likely to get a shake of the head. It’s good to be able to order your own phone at TelMex, tell the maid you need the patio mopped today, ask the bus driver if he goes to Walmart, just to give a few examples. This is a Spanish speaking country and if you want to find your way around and get things done, it’s in your best interest to learn the language. We’ve heard the argument “but there are so many English-speaking people here now.” It was your decision to move here. Imagine if you moved to France and tried to get by speaking only English.

Besides the IFC, there are many fine schools in the area:

Melchor’s is in Versailles and comes highly recommended. We know others who’ve had great success at this school, which is located at Viena 209-A.

The Spanish Experience Center is in 5 de Diciembre on Rep. de Chile 182. It’s a good location and easy to get to.

Proulex is great for French, English and Spanish. They are located in El Centro at Libertad 105, right in the heart of everything! You can leave class and go forth to barter and buy at the local markets.

In the Plaza Marina you’ll find French Connect at local A46, another school offering three language choices.

You will get to a point you want to try out your newfound skills. Babel Bar on the Isla del Cuale is a great place to test your accent, enjoy excellent live music and fine food, and meet new friends. After all, what did you come to Puerto Vallarta for?

    Go to the Theater !

“The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” – The Musical at the New Boutique Theater

The hottest show in town is getting rave reviews!  It’s a 1978 Broadway Musical based upon a true story of a sensationalist TV news reporter’s mission to shut down The Chicken Ranch, a 150-year-old bordello in Texas.

David Restivo directs the show, with musical director Bob Bruneau and choreographer Jacobo Martinez.  The show features 26 Puerto Vallarta locals that sing, dance and act.  The local talent pool is fantastic in Vallarta and the show is reminiscent of it.

Everyone that’s seen it is raving about the show. The music, comedic timing, costumes and scenery are a throwback to the movie by the same name from 1982, featuring Dolly Parton, Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise.  The show is fun, light and refreshing.

Opening night was a fabulous hit! It was a sold out event and has continued to be as such virtually every night since.  There’s always something new ,fun and exciting each night as the cast is notorious for their impromptu hilarious dialogue. You should check it out before the final curtain comes down on March 10th.

The show is playing at the brand new  ‘The Boutique Theater’ – located on Calle Naranjo 330, (corner of Basilio Badillo) Zona Romantica

  • Purchasing A Business In Puerto Vallarta

For quite some time, my partner and I had been looking at purchase a business together that would fit our personalities and lifestyle.  While living in Vancouver BC and after examining several options, we came across Estigo Scooters, an ATV/Scooter rental and touring company for sale in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico listed by Timothy Real Estate Group.

After some serious discussions, we decided to contact the Timothy Real Estate Group and were fortunate to have been connected with Taniel Chemsian.  His professionalism and vast knowledge of the market place was exactly what we were hoping to find. He immediately provided us with all the information we needed about the business, providing helpful insight to the industry and that of the real estate market in Puerto Vallarta.

Two weeks later and after further discussions between my partner and I, we decided to put in an offer for Estigo Scooters. Taniel promptly submitted our offer and began the negotiations on our behalf.  Soon after our accepted offer, we booked our tickets and were on our way to Puerto Vallarta, where we met with the owners, physically inspected the business and carried out our due diligence.

Once we set foot in Estigo, we immediately realized this was for us and thus decided to move forward with the purchase.  Thanks to Taniel, the rest of the process ran as smoothly as possible. He made it possible for us to close and take immediate ownership of the business.

We are fortunate to have been able to relocate to this tropical paradise and live out our dream as independent business owners.

Thank you so much Taniel Chemsian and Timothy Real Estate Group for enabling this experience in such a smooth and professional way.

  • Donna’s Review: Vallarta’s House Hunters Charity Event

House Hunters filming in Puerto Vallarta
House Hunters filming in Puerto Vallarta

The House Hunters Charity Event was the Party of the Year!

The event planning all started with group of volunteers from around Puerto Vallarta who asked to be involved planning the event.  Everyone who donated their time and talents had the most wonderful experience.  We borrowed some ideas from the House Hunters International investors Derick and Zapher of San Diego, California.  They are expert event coordinators and even had an event of their own when the House Hunters Show originally aired in the United States.  Derick and Zapher also flew in for this special Puerto Vallarta viewing.

It was decided the event was to be held at Daiquiri Dicks Restaurant in the Zona Romantica.  It’s a great space for a large event and Tari Bowman and her staff did a wonderful job at handling 350 people.  The service was incredible, no wait time for drinks, and we had some deliciosos aperitivos, delicious appetizers!

Carl Timothy went to Hollywood, California and brought back the popcorn boxes and celebrity costumes.  Carl also selected old time movie tunes and themes, but I’m not sure if we heard any of them over the great music that was provided by Sylvie Scopazzo our local songstress and Jorge Hernandez on guitar.  They did a great job at entertaining all of us for the evening, thanks Sylvie and Jorge!

Our celebrity impersonators were Marilyn Monroe played by our beautiful Andrea Graham, Groucho Marx played by our perfectly funny Sebastian Lopez and Charlie Chaplin played so very real by Hugo Daniel Gomez.  All our celebrities prepared for their parts by watching old movies that their celebrities were in and once they put on the costumes the transition was fantastic as they posed for photos with all the guests and remained in character all night long.  The professional photographer of the event was Joseph Kandoll, taking great photos of the event, guests, and celebrities.  Check out Joseph’s fun photos  https://timothyrealestategroup.com/hhi .  Our hats off to Andrea, Sebastian, Daniel and Joseph!

The event was an opportunity for the community and our beloved city of Puerto Vallarta to celebrate and be proud, about Mexico; we want to show the world that people love living here, it’s safe and beautiful, and it’s one of the best places to live, work, and retire to in the world!  And we all love a great party!

One of our celebrity guests was unable to make it to the event so we were able to connect with him via Skype, it was Elvis Presley!  He apologized for not being able get to us but was thinking of us and wishing us well.  You can watch the video from Elvis played by Ron Decar of Viva Las Vegas Weddings at https://www.vegasweddingstreaming.com/play/index.php?eventID=2218 (skip about the first 5 minutes of the video)

At 9:00pm The House Hunters International Puerto Vallarta show was debuted in Mexico and everyone cheered at the first sight of Puerto Vallarta.  Then everyone cheered again for Derick and Zapher and when our House Hunter’s International agent Taniel Chemsian hit the screen everyone loved it and cheered again.  It was really great seeing how much everyone enjoyed the show.  I’ve seen it 3 times and I never get tired of watching it, I think House Hunters did a great job at showing how beautiful Puerto Vallarta is and it’s a great place to buy properties.

I spoke with the buyers Derick and Zapher and they had a couldn’t believe how many people came to the event and they are very happy with their decision to purchase in Puerto Vallarta.  Condominios Terraza Del Mar was the chosen property on HGTV’s House Hunters International. Now with as little as 20% down and you can purchase one of the few remaining three bedroom units.

The proceeds of this event benefited our charities; Becas Vallarta A.C., The Navy League’s Toys for Tots, and Asilo San Juan Diego, an assisted living facility.  Over 350 people attended the event and we were able to raise over $117,000 pesos in ticket sales and raffle tickets!  Thanks to everyone that attended the event!

    by Donna Lynn Davies

For more information on how you can get involved with one of these charities or if you would like to make a contribution, please contact Carl Timothy at carl@timothyrealestategroup.com

There was a surprising overflow turn out at the event and they were able to raise some much-needed funds for the charities.  100% of all proceeds went to the Becas, Toys for Tots, and Asilo San Juan Diego.  You can see all the images from the event here.

“People often ask us ‘where do the locals go to eat?’ We wanted to create an experience for people to learn not only where locals eat, but also the history of the dishes and their importance in Mexican culture,” Lindsay explains, “We love living here and wanted to showcase why: the food, the culture, the families, the history. Vallarta Food Tours allows us to do just that!”

Originally from Oregon, Lindsay moved to Mexico after completing her MBA at the University of Colorado, and immediately fell in love with the country’s culture, charm, history and cuisine.  Co-founder Paul Mayer was born in Mexico City and raised in Miami, another culinary hot-spot.  Some of Paul’s most cherished memories are of family get-togethers in the central state of Guanajuato, Mexico.  Those weekly Sunday gatherings were punctuated with stories, laughter and, of course, great food!

Vallarta Food Tours offers unique food and cultural walking tours.  Suitable for all fitness levels, Vallarta Food Tours are perfect for both visitors and locals alike.  Tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday at 11am.  Tickets may be purchased online at www.vallartafoodtours.com, at La Albufera restaurant (Aquiles Serdan #242) or by phone at 1-888-457-2210 from the USA or Canada, or 322.181.7196 in Mexico.
