    Time Changes

    Spring ahead, Fall back. That’s how we’ve always remembered the method of changing clocks. Daylight Savings starts in the spring and ends in the fall, this year on October 27th in Puerto Vallarta.

    A little known fact about Daylight Savings Time or DST, is that Canada was a leader in this time-change trend. Austria and Germany were the first to employ DST in Europe in 1916, but in 1908, Port Arthur, Ontario, which is now Thunder Bay, began to turn their clocks forward by one hour on July 1st of that year. It didn’t take long before it had spread across the northern part of the continent.

    Two years into World War I, on April of 1916, clocks were turned ahead in Germany and Austria by one hour in a rationalization to minimize the use of electric and gas lighting. Saving fuel in the war effort was extremely important. England, France and other countries followed suit, but most turned back to standard time after the war. World War II brought DST back to Europe.

    Amazingly, the original plan for setting clocks forward and back was much more complicated, and comprised of switching ahead twenty minutes on each of the four Sundays in April, and doing the same with a switch back in September. Imagine changing a total of eight times a year; what we do now seems simple.

    Although the European Parliament recently voted to discontinue the use of DST, all Union members need to agree to pass it into law and that has yet to occur. It’s been a continuing discussion for several years in the United States to abolish DST. There are way too many opinions about what and how changes should be made, with states like Florida going in the opposite direction, wanting to institute it all year long. Hawaii doesn’t observe DST at all, and only a tiny slice of Arizona does.

    This past summer in Washington State, a bill was signed by Governor Jay Inslee, and passed both state House and Senate to change permanently to DST but it hasn’t been instituted into law as of this date. Oregon and California followed Washington’s lead, and British Columbia, Canada is making plans to authorize the same.

    Given all this, it won’t be long before Mexico makes the same decisions and we no longer have DST in Puerto Vallarta. Airlines have made it clear that it will be vital for everyone to be operating on the same clock. In the meantime, we still turn back on October 27th, 2019.

  • Vallarta: It’s Time You Learn More About Litibu

    Litibú

    At exactly the same latitude as the Hawaiian Islands, the curious traveler will find the settlement of Litibú, north of Puerto Vallarta. After having lived in Puerto Vallarta for several years, we’d never heard of Litibú until one day in 2003, a realtor friend gushed about the beauty and tranquility of this small and ever expanding community. Nestled on the peninsula between Sayulita and Punta de Mita, Litibú is at the southern end of the recently recognized Riviera Nayarit, which covers 160 KM (100 miles) from Punta de Mita to San Blas. With easy access from the airport in Puerto Vallarta, Litibú is a very attractive destination. Star sightings are not unusual in the area, since celebrities have discovered the privacy of Litibú, so it’s quite possible that you could find yourself having breakfast next to the likes of Sandra Bullock or Kim Kardashian, most likely without an entourage but maybe with children in tow.

    Litibú is simply the name of the bay, the meaning of which comes from the local Huichol Indians song of the birds. Needless to say, the area is wonderful for birdwatchers with over 300 species found along this portion of coastline. You’ll see everything from huge frigates and brown pelicans to tiny hummingbirds. There are common crows, gulls and vultures, as well as the grackle, known for amazing mimicry.

    When we originally ventured from Puerto Vallarta to Litibú, over a decade ago, much of the development was hidden from view. Now there are sweeping estates and charming bungalows, combined with local humble homes, some that have been there for many years. The territory is truly a photographer’s dream with flora, fauna and sweeping views. Don’t forget the tripod.

    With access to Punta de Mita to the south and Sayulita to the north, you can drive up a well maintained road for surfing lessons, taco stands, fine dining, beach cafés, live music, and all the wonderful culture that Mexico has to offer. We never fail to drop into the Litibú Grill, the pride of Litibú. The food is excellent and the view is one of the best outside of Puerto Vallarta. A little beachcombing and lunch will tie up a perfect trip for day-trippers.

    Whether you’re looking to star gaze or bird watch, give yourself a complete day or just wander north of Puerto Vallarta for an afternoon trek, go see Litibú. Signage makes it easy from either Sayulita or Punt de Mita.

    Flying with Your Pet Onboard

    There have been some new regulations in the past year regarding flying with in-cabin pets. We want to keep everyone updated as it would be a miserable experience to arrive at the airport, with Fifi and Fido ready to go, only to be told they won’t be allowed on the plane.

    Several major airlines have tightened their guidelines on flying with pets and service animals, both of which can fall into seriously different categories. There have been some regrettable incidents with passengers vs. pets and this has unfortunately caused airlines to take a second look at their procedures. Earlier this year on a Delta flight, a military veteran was mauled by a 50 pound dog that was sitting in a fellow passenger’s lap (an egregious departure from Delta policy) resulting in a lawsuit against both the airline and dog owner. Delta has banned pit bulls and animals under the age of four months, regardless of whether they are claimed as pets, service or support animals. Sadly, much of this has been caused by travelers avoiding fees for their pets by claiming them as certified support animals. Certification is as simple as going to a website and printing out a document.

    There have been incidents that have hit the media with little restraint on what is actual news, but in one case a passenger at Schönefeld Airport in Germany insisted his fifteen inch boa constrictor was a support animal, after he tried to slip it onboard unnoticed in his pants. When customs pulled him aside, curious to the unnatural bulge in his trousers, all joking was put aside and the animal was confiscated and taken to a rescue center, the passenger boarded and was given a hefty fine, giving a whole new meaning to support.

    This doesn’t mean you can’t bring your furry friends while vacationing or traveling to and from your home in Puerto Vallarta. This isn’t going to stop over a million people annually who travel with their pets, and bona fide service and emotional support animals. What it does mean is that you need to be fully aware of the rules and regulations of each airline of which you book tickets. All of the airlines spell out their rules in great detail on their websites, so there is no excuse in not having the knowledge. If you have further questions, make use of the 1-800 number.

    More precise rules now govern what is regarded as a service animal. They are not considered pets, and must be [individually trained or able to provide assistance to a person
    with a disability] and be able to prove if so demanded, according to the Department of Transportation. These animals can fly for free, just as an airline wouldn’t charge someone for bringing an oxygen supply on board. However, with both items, there are certifications and standards to be followed.

    All airlines have taken these new rules into consideration and have made many changes; we highly recommend calling the airline directly to be absolutely certain before booking your flight to Puerto Vallarta. If you are traveling with a support animal, such as a guide dog, it is imperative you contact the airline at least 48 hours in advance. They will let you know their requirements, which will include certification from a medical or mental health professional, as well as veterinarian certificates that confirm the health of the animal and up-to-date vaccinations.

  • Puerto Vallarta – Biblioteca Los Mangos

    In an old mango orchard in Puerto Vallarta, on Avenida Francisco Villa a dream came true when the library was built with the help of community support. Opened in November of 1996 and host to guests of many countries, there are books in English, Spanish and other languages. Audio and visual services are also available. Free to the public and those who live in Puerto Vallarta (even short-timers) can get a library card. Your passport and a copy of a utility bill is all you need.

    We pass along our used books to the library once we find we have a bit of a pile, and they always receive them with gratefulness and a big smile. If you have books gathering dust and at risk of mildew, get them to the biblioteca, where they will lovingly lend and take care of them. They accept books in all languages.

    You’ll find other things happening in and around this rustic building. Ballet classes, piano, yoga, sculpture and painting classes; all very affordable. Cultural activities, art shows and community events take place inside and out on the expansive lawn.

    This weekend, March 16th and 17th, you won’t want to miss the Third Annual Puerto Bazar at Biblioteca Los Mangos! Here is a chance to get some Mexican coolture. There will be entrepreneurs from Puerto Vallarta and surrounding areas, showing off art, design, music, dance and a diversity of many talents. Some contributors will include Sandy Ideas; Peekabow Mx; Je Suis; JUST-Alma PV; Little Maravillas; Sunflower Beuaty Care; Hilo & el Mar; ZARU Catering & Eventos, plus many more.

    Entrance is free, with a selection of delicious food and drinks for sale. There will be family workshops, continual shows throughout the day, and something for everyone. It’s a relaxing place to be on the weekend, away from the crowds and hubbub. You can bring dogs, too, but please keep them on leash.

    The Library is located at Avenida Francisco Villa 1000, Colonia Los Mangos. Busses, taxis and Uber will all know this destination, just south of Costco.

    Normal open hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 9 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 6 pm. Closed Sundays.

  • Vallarta Has a 4 Star Restaurant Scene

    Fine Dining In and Around Puerto – We are often asked for recommendations for dinner (and breakfast and lunch) and there are many great restaurants to choose from in Puerto Vallarta; it’s hard to pin down our favorite. Tre Piatti is high on the list of best places to eat in Puerto Vallarta. Chefs eat here. The food gets constant raves for quality and imagination. They change their menu with fresh and exciting items every two weeks. The kitchen at Tre Piatti shops and supports locally, so your produce is in season and picked at the peak. Dishes at Tre Piatti are eye-catching, innovative and delicious. The service is excellent; they treat every customer as if they’ve come home to dinner. The wait staff are gracious, and don’t be surprised if the chef welcomes you himself and gives you a big hug when it’s time to say goodnight.

    We love Vista Grill/El Dorado at Los Muertos beach. The names switch up for lunch or dinner but the food is always exceptional. Evenings at this location are breathtaking and it’s a great place to show off to guests, with the pier as a stunning foreground to jaw dropping sunsets. The service here is one of the best in Puerto Vallarta. For a change of scenery, we love the Marina. An evening stroll to view who’s in port, admire the fancy gorgeous yachts and maybe spy a crocodile. We dine at Tintoque and slip into an environment so similar to Mexico City, you might be there. The menu changes here, too so expect surprises with each visit. We do love the inventiveness. Accents on flavor and fresh décor, they offer four to five specials daily. It’s a tough choice to make, so you know you’ll return again and again.

    Go a bit further north and you’ll find the best restaurants within a several hundred kilometer range. There is nothing close to this quality or service unless you go to Mexico City. The Spice Market, a Jean Georges Vongericthen restaurant at the W Hotel isn’t simply dining out. It’s a lifetime experience, one that you’ll want to repeat as often as possible. The stickler is you must be a guest of the W Hotel to make a reservation. You can patronize this fine establishment as the guest of a guest or find yourself a good connection, but we do recommend making the effort. The other is Carolina’s at the St. Regis, and the same goes for privacy factor. This is haute cuisine and you can’t really find anything comparable within the confines of Puerto Vallarta.

    Boats in Our Harbor

    The cruise ship marina often has visitors. Sometimes yachts are huge, with heliports and large tenders to transport passengers from the boat to shore, or another vessel. Such luminaries as Bill Gates, David Geffen, Carlos Slim and other well-known seafarers have moored here in Puerto Vallarta, and managed to create mystery and curiosity, initiating the wagging of resident tongues.

    When ships of foreign navies dock, their homelands are announced by the flag that flies off their bow and their presence can often seem ominous but it’s reassuring to know that any ship in the port of Puerto Vallarta has arrived with friendly intentions. As a matter of fact, these are intentional visits, meant to build on already well established good relationships. The Mexican Navy welcomes those with focus on exchanging professional goals. Regardless of comments and attitudes coming from the current administration in Washington DC, the Mexican and USA militaries, by virtue of being neighbors, have had an ongoing sociable interaction for decades.

    Currently the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego is visiting Puerto Vallarta and the crew will be working within the community on cooperative projects. This ship has recently returned from a deployment in the Indo-Pacific, Mediterranean, Horn of Africa and Middle East, where they spent seven months successfully performing maneuvers and activities. The USS San Diego is from the US 3rd Fleet and happens to be the fourth US Navy vessel to be named after the California city and saint, being the only ship harbored in her signature city in the United States. This ship’s mission is to transport and deploy combat and support elements from the Marine Expeditionary Units and Brigades. She can carry up to 800 Marines and able to act as a debarkation for air cushion and conventional landing craft. Some have mentioned she is odd looking but her shape and design define her purpose. The basic motivation is to promote stability throughout the Pacific area of operations, to advance peace and security.

    These US sailors will be checking out neighborhoods of our beautiful Puerto Vallarta and we’ll be opening our arms to them, considering their assistance to the community during their stay. Make sure to say hello, tip your hat and let them know they are appreciated. They won’t always be in uniform but US Military aren’t too difficult to indentify. These men and women are learning about many cultures and ours will be one they shall remember with warmth and kindness.

  • The Amazing Vallarta Botanical Gardens

    If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit the Vallarta Botanical Gardens you are really missing out on an incredible opportunity to see Flora and Fauna that you won’t see in many parts of the planet. Living in the Bay of Banderas can bring a wonderful surprise around every corner and at the Botanical Gardens the trip can be something that fills the soul. Tropical plants and animals thrive only in this region can be seen with a wonderful walk through the beautiful grounds crossing bridges, wandering through a well-kept jungle and even having a delicious lunch or dinner in the second floor restaurant. Feed a humming bird or just enjoy the sound of the rivers and quiet tranquility of the Sierra Madre mountains before doing a little shopping on your way home in the gift shop. The chapel can be a wonderful place to get married in or simply give thanks. The Gardens are a perfect place to take visitors who enjoy fresh air and the wonder of Mother Nature.

    Humpbacks!

    Our beautiful humpback whales are back in Puerto Vallarta, gracing the Bay of Banderas with their amazing ballet in the ocean. There are many ways to schedule a boat ride out on the water and we recommend exploring the options before embarking on your adventure. Check with vendors on the Beach at Los Muertos in the vicinity of the pier, or with the concierge in your hotel. We enjoy going out on the smaller boats (pangas), rather than the big booze cruise vessels. The skippers are knowledgeable, have lived here all of their lives, and know more interesting information about whales than we could ever find in Wikipedia. The season for whale watching in Puerto Vallarta began December 8, 2019 and will officially go through March 23, 2020.

    It’s important to be on an authorized boat and we suggest asking to see their permit before handing over tickets. They won’t be offended. Local fishermen and dive masters are environmentally ethical for the most part. There are few rogues in the boating industry here in Puerto Vallarta. You should be asked to don life jackets, as well and though you may be the best swimmer on either side of the border, go ahead and show everyone else how responsible you are. It’s a coast guard rule and you’ll be showing respect for the captain.

    It’s easy to spot a humpback, with their obvious hump and long black dorsal fins. The fluked tail is their trademark and what you will be looking for on the water. Once you spot them, get your photos done quickly and then sit back to watch the show. The rising tail with the sea waterfalling from the wavy edges is thrilling and something many will never see again in a lifetime. It’s Mother Nature at her best.

    Although the blue whale is the largest animal in the world, humpbacks follow close behind in size. When fully grown the males average 45 feet and the females are larger and can get up to 52 feet. Whaling records show the largest to be seen was a female that was, unfortunately killed in the Caribbean. She was allegedly 89 feet long and weighed just short of 100 tons. The typical body mass of a humpback is typically over 40 metric tons.

    Winter is courting season in the world of humpbacks. They feed in the winter, closer to the poles, and then come to honeymoon around the equator. We are the lucky ones to witness their astonishing breaching, a show of fierce competition in an effort to mate.

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Art In Mexico

    Art and Sustainability in Mexico

    Along with local endeavors, like Mosayko Vallarta, and their beautification around town, especially in Parque Lazaro Cardena, we are beginning to see modern touches in Puerto Vallarta that combine art and sustainability. Guma is the brand name of products made by Alejandro Curi Chávez, an innovative Mexican designer who has made it his mission to create designs using recycled material. Guma states on their website “The development of the products is based on the properties of recycled rubber, and is carried out through the creation of an innovative processed that are friendly to the environment. Through design we seek to expand the applications of this material, taking advantage of its qualities, seeking constant innovation in collaboration with different disciplines.”

    Taking an old idea, the sole of the Mexican huarache sandal, Curi and other fashion designers created the concept for a mechanism that converts old tires, just as the original huarache was made, but even better. The idea was to place these machines throughout Mexico in areas where anyone can use them. The genius behind this uses recycling to make new shoes for practically nothing. Everyone loves and can wear huaraches and now everyone can afford them, too. In the past few years, the marketability has put prices higher than in the past.

    The applications for recycling of plastics and rubber are endless. Curi’s training at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology in New York) enabled him to join in on some incredible programs, including one referred to as Cross Pollination, an idea that was fomented with the mixing of materials for practical applications. Chairs, benches, playgrounds are some of the results, and now this Mexican designer is exhibiting his pieces in Mexico City, London and Dubai, all in high visibility events.

    Curi has furthered the shoe concept and combined efforts with the famous Mexican shoe designer Oveja Calzado, as well as another designer, Taller Nu. Together they are introducing sustainable footwear that we hope to soon see for sale in Puerto Vallarta. We look forward to being a part of and contributing to this method of Social Change.

    Yoga in Puerto Vallarta

    Yoga has become very popular in the United States, Canada and Mexico. This continent may love its variety of food, spices and special drinks but health has been on an uptrend in the past couple decades, with Yoga being in the forefront.

    Though there are several others, Davannayoga in el Centro is one of the oldest yoga schools in Puerto Vallarta. A variety of yoga classes are also available at many of the gyms in Puerto Vallarta. Davannayoga is a classic school, teaching vinyasa, hatha yago, morning yoga, meditation, restorative yoga and dharma yoga.

    Yoga Vallarta is another very reputable studio and offers Pilates, Ashtanga, Tai Chi, as well. They also have meditation, acupuncture, chiropractic and a dance studio. Yoga Vallarta is conveniently located in Old Town.

    Yoga retreats have become very popular in the Puerto Vallarta area and you can find high quality locations, with well trained instructors, and amazing amenities up and down the coast from Sayulita to Yelapa. Spas such as Xinalani, located just short of Yelapa, a short boat ride away, attract students, as well as yoga instructors looking for escape from normal routine and a chance to learn from others. It’s the most exciting relaxing environment you could possibly find. Weeklong stays might include courses in plant medicine, healing, sound bathing, and dance. Most retreats like Xinalani offer a full bar, vegan and non-vegan menus, attention to gluten, dairy and nut-free diets. Girlfriend trips are very popular and many places have special programs for families, though children under the age of five and usually not accepted. An abundance of programs, custom and standard, are available.
