  • Walkable Puerto Vallarta

    Walking the Malecón

    You can entertain yourself for days on end walking the Malecón. There’s so much to do, we have made a short list but you’ll discover many things on your own. And it’s all free!

    There are two points to start from, depending on your fortitude when you walk along the Malecón. The first is The Sheraton Hotel, where you will pass the stadium to the east. Besides sporting events, there are other exciting happenings at the stadium. Lila Downs, among others, have given free concerts at the stadium. This is also where the International Fireworks Competition is held when it visits Puerto Vallarta. Just south of the Sheraton on the ocean side, you may catch sight of a volleyball tournament or other international outdoor event; this space has been utilized for many attractions since it was stripped bare by the Hurricane Kena in October 2002.

    Along your way, you’ll find great places to stop of a cold beer, tacos, and other refreshments at establishments such as Mangos Beach Club or El Barracuda, where you can find a spot in the shade indoors or relax on the beach.

    Hotel Rosita is considered the northern point of the bona fide Malecón. Join in on walking tours viewing Malecón sculptures on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 (don’t be late; the guide will start without you) from November to April. Meet in front of the Millennium sculpture next to Hotel Rosita. It’s also free but you can make a contribution to the Los Mangos Public Library. The walk take about two hours, with approximately fifteen sculptures to see, great information and a wee bit of gossip, sponsored by Gary Thompson, the owner of Galleria Pacifico.

    If you’re on the Malecón in the evening, you are sure to observe all sorts of entertainment. Make good use of the tip jars. Cultural and civic shows at Los Arcos arena (the Arches) seat about three hundred people (bring a pillow; it’s hard concrete) and usually start in the early evening.

    The main plaza and Our lady of Guadalupe church is a main attraction, the site of colossal Christmas celebrations for the entire month of December; weddings, baptisms, funerals, and regular services.

    Cross the bridge to south of town and you’ll find live theater, restaurants, boutiques, jewelry stores, pubs, pizza parlors, and a growing ex-pat community. The malecón ends with a lovely walk directly on the beach, as you pass some of the finest and oldest dining establishments in Puerto Vallarta. Vendors are here in the daytime and the beach is a lively place with the pier docking departures and arrivals of small boats and fishing excursions, as well as water taxis to the southern coastline.

  • Vallarta Inspired Living News: Pancho Villa

    Pancho Villa

    It’s fun to dress up as Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata for Halloween, Mexican Revolution celebrations in Mexico, and Cinco de Mayo in the US (they don’t actually celebrate this day in Mexico). If those donning costumes knew more about Pancho Villa, who was frequently referred to as the Centaur of the North, they may change their minds. Whereas Zapata’s army was more likely to be known as caballeros (gentlemen), Villa’s troops had a bloodthirsty, brutal side. During the revolution in Chihuahua, sixty female soldiers (soldaderas) were captured and one of them, still in possession of her pistol, tried to shoot Pancho Villa. The indignant Villa marched through the group of women inquiring which lady had fired the shot. No one would speak, all in defense of the others. Villa had them tied up “like stacks of firewood or barrels,” and dousing them with kerosene, lit the group on fire. The soldaderas did not beg for mercy. Instead they screamed in rage at the maniac who would go to such lengths to defend his male ego.

    Villa, who changed his name from José Doroteo Arango Arámbula to Francisco Pancho Villa, was the commander of the Mexican army in the northern reaches of Mexico, while Emiliano Zapata, leading his Zapatistas, was the in charge of the south. They were very different leaders in many ways.

    Little is known about Villa in his younger days but he liked to claim his true father was a well known bandit, Agustin Villa, rather than the wealthy landowner who raised him, Agustin Arango. Villa was not a great scholar and didn’t waste time in school, lending his hand to his mother on their vast ranch after Agustin Arango died. Before becoming a revolutionary, Villa worked as a sharecropper, arriero (muleskinner), bricklayer and even as a foreman for the US railway. Led to a more adventurous life as a bandit, it was a natural ascendance to soldier, leader and commander of the Mexican army, a level he achieved due to his willingness to take chances others avoided.

    Pancho Villa lost his final battles of the revolution. He turned to the not so lofty occupation of a mercenary, attacking a small US/Mexico border town, which turned into the Battle of Columbus in 1916. Villa consistently evaded capture by US Army General John Pershing, until Pershing was called back to Washington DC at the outbreak of World War l.

    Pancho Villa was recruited to star as himself in Hollywood movies, and his popularity grew with corridas (ballads), the type of which we still hear to this day, aggrandizing cartel criminals as heroes and celebrities. In the end, after once barely escaping execution by firing squad and being pardoned by President Madero, Villa tried to involve himself once again in Mexican politics. He was assassinated in 1923, allegedly by order of the less tolerant President Obregón.

    Home Swapping in Puerto Vallarta

    Home swapping has become very popular in the past couple decades and Puerto Vallarta loves the idea. It gives people a chance to see our city, as well as Puerto Vallarta homeowners having an inexpensive getaway. If you consider this type of travel risky, don’t like the idea of people touching your stuff, or you have privacy issues, this is not for you. However there are a lot of people doing it these days and those with the most posh homes get to stay in glamorous New York high-rise apartments and swanky beach villas. We’ve yet to hear a bad trip story. There’s a trade at every level and once you scan the sites, you’re sure to find something with a match to your home in Puerto Vallarta. Of course, the nicer your home, the better swap you will have. Some people offer the use of a vehicle, too. It’s a great way to travel.
    There are several different ways to swap homes. Simultaneous swap is the most common. Simply swap homes on an agreed upon time frame. Non-simultaneous usually works well with second homes, great for people going on vacation and not wanting to leave an empty house. Different dates are chosen for the swap. Some companies offer point systems; you allow guests to stay in your home in Puerto Vallarta while you’re on vacation or business and redeem your points in homes participating in the program. There’s also a method commonly referred to as hospitality exchange, which give travelers the chance to be hosted in someone’s extra bedroom, while putting themselves on a list to do the same on a date in the future. Then there’s house-sitting, which sometimes includes pet care, but can often run into weeks and even months; a great way to live abroad, see the sites and not be rushed.
    Our experience has been one of making new friends outside of Puerto Vallarta, visiting places we might not ordinarily have the chance to see. Staying in suburban areas has a great appeal; especially when there’s a good public transportation system. When traveling, it’s good to get out of your comfort zone, learn about the area and its cultural contributions, and discover interesting historical facts. If you’re staying in someone’s home, you have the opportunity to meet their neighbors. Many home-exchangers let their neighboring apartments or houses know there will be someone unfamiliar staying in their place. This gives you the chance to know the locals, which is, by far, the best way to travel to any destination.

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Vegetarian Options

    Vegetarian Restaurants

    Many years ago we were delighted when Planeta Vegetariano opened on the north side of Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral. It was a great choice to treat our vegetarian friends and at the time it opened, there was nothing like it in Puerto Vallarta. Their buffet had a great variety and the place has always been clean and inviting. The best chile relleno to be found and beans you can eat forever. You’ll find them at Iturbide 270.
    Presently, there are many more choices and they’re spread from one end of town to the other. We name a few here.
    A personal favorite is Planet Detox on Prisciliano Sánchez, the road directly south of Costco that takes you to Pitillal. They have a varied menu with lots of surprises, plus cold pressed juices, smoothies, and excellent desserts. If you’re looking for non-dairy, this is an awesome place for sweets. They are in Colonia Las Moras, at Calle Prisciliano 519.
    The Yogi Bar in the Marina has amazing bowls, for breakfast and lunch. Bowls are a relatively new thing, and we love them for the fact we can add or subtract ingredients according to taste. Those with berries and açaí are our favorites and very filling. The sandwiches and waffles at the yogi bar are to over the top and for a quick pick me up, they have shots (just like tequila, only healthier options) for anti-inflammatory and energy. Service is very friendly and accommodating.
    For some excellent gluten free selections, check out The Green Place in Colonia 5 de Deciembre. Located at Honduras 309, they are open for breakfast and lunch, plus they do wonderful workshops on vegan cooking and the vegan diet. (https://www.curlygirldesign.com/) This is where you can learn to eat vegan, be totally sustained, and love your meals.
    Many restaurants in Puerto Vallarta offer vegetarian and vegan options on their menus. El Erizo de Mau in Old Town on Pino Suarez 232 is open for dinner until 11 pm and has almost all five star reviews. El Erizo is only one example of establishments where one can find delicious and well prepared dishes that are vegetarian, plus gluten and dairy free. More restaurants in Puerto Vallarta are finding it’s a good idea to appeal to all appetites. Where we were once well known for ceviche and steak houses, we now have offerings for more sustainability.   • Puerto Vallarta Living: When is it too much?

    Lessons in Not Overdoing

    Most people come to Puerto Vallarta and have a fabulous time. On the other hand, there are those who go overboard in all the wrong places, and we mean that literally.
    When you go to the beach it’s going to be HOT; you are much closer to the equator than where you hail from. If you are like the standard tourist, you’ll be exposing parts of your body that don’t likely see the sun on a regular basis. In some cases, never. We’re not talking just about underarms and backs of knees, though these are prime places to get blistered but good. Sun screen is available everywhere, in the large supermarkets, pharmacies, the OXXO’s (those 7-ll type stores that seem to be on every corner), and gift shops. This is intense heat and shouldn’t shine on you for more than half an hour, if you don’t want to look like a boiled lobster. Looking like one is almost as bad as feeling like one. Hats are advised, as well as the sarongs for sale everywhere. The sarongs here in Puerto Vallarta are called pareos and suitable for men, women and children. Wrap one around your waist and toss another over your shoulders.
    The other thing people overdo in Puerto Vallarta has to do with liquids. Water should be your main drink, all day, every day. When drinking alcohol, have a glass of water between each cocktail. It’ll keep you just as busy and make your head less spinney in the mornings. Dehydration is the number cause of self-induced trauma. When the girl in the disco, dressed as a bandolero tries to pour shots down your throat, all the while pounding on your head and demanding pesos, just say no. Avoid jello shots, which contain the most intoxicating, cheapest booze available. If you’re worried about ice, don’t be. It’s purified, just like the water that comes out of the big blue bottles. Finally, limit yourself and make a group decision about your limitations. Carry only enough cash in pesos to drink that maximum and get you back home. Drinking is a team sport, in which you make your own rules. Make sure you’re winning at the game.

    Pedicures: Our feet take a beating in Puerto Vallarta. We have an amazing collection of open toe sandals, from flip flops to fancy huaraches. Sneakers and hiking boots fill the remainder of our assortment of shoes. With toes showing most of the time, we like them to look pleasant, rather than gnarly and dirty. More than that however, is the importance of foot fitness. It’s not simply about pampering yourself. The benefits to your general health are significant.

    Pedicures and manicures are accompanied by foot and hand massages that help to improve blood circulation. This type of treatment also improves mobility for your joints. A weekly visit won’t just keep your hands and feet looking young, you’ll feel better, too! If you maintain your nails on a regular basis, you are more likely to avoid fungi and other ailments. Removing dead skin cells does more than make your hands and feet attractive; it encourages new cell development and builds strength. We’re not the only one with bad habits of picking cuticles and this leaves them dry, cracked and at times, bleeding and sore. A professional can help with this annoying tendency and it’s very de-stressing, as well.

    Manicures and pedicures have long been available and highly recommended for men and women and we love the fact that color is acceptable for males these days, especially in Puerto Vallarta, whether you are straight or gay. Why allow women to have all the fun and flash?

    You can’t beat the cost of these services in Puerto Vallarta. Whether it’s a simple procedure you’re after or a medical treatment, the prices are better than anything you will find north of the border. We love the attention to detail, even in the small spa shops, where a pedicure runs from $120 to $250 (pesos). For a complete medical treatment, we suggest visiting Dr Paty. She is a bona fide medical doctor and her staff is specially trained technicians with degrees; their clinic is inside the CMQ hospitals, in Puerto Vallarta (Basilio Badillo location) and Bucerias.

    As podiatrists (podogola), they treat infections, fungi, calluses, and other problems that afflict feet. They don’t do the expected water soak, but use an antibacterial gel. Believe it or not, this service is only $300 pesos. Appointments can be made by calling 223 0878. Check out their Facebook page for reviews.

    We also like to visit the nail salons in Puerto Vallarta to support this community and there is where we find an array of incredible colors. For Mexican celebrations, we like a combination of red and green, which also works for Christmas. Or blue and gold for Hanukkah. Sports teams give a chance to double up on color; for example…Seattle, green and blue; Denver, orange and navy blue; New Orleans, black and gold. Some technicians are adept at painting small flowers and designs.

  • Puerto Vallarta – Benito Juarez

    Benito Juárez

    Benito Juárez is a significant figure in Mexican history and we see his name in many places in Puerto Vallarta. There are streets named for him, an entire colonia (neighborhood), schools, businesses. Born on March 21, 1806, the birthday of Benito Juárez is celebrated every year in Mexico on the third Monday in March. Banks will be closed and many workers will have the day off.

    Benito Juárez is probably the most important representation of Mexican nationalism. He stands for resistance to foreign intervention. He is the premier model of a leader who would not allow meddling from outside his territory and will always be revered for this reason. We can only hope that Andrés Manuel López Obrador will follow the example of Benito Juárez.

    Benito Juárez came from very humble roots, a poor boy raised in the mountains of Oaxaca, born to Zapotec peasants who both died from natural causes when Benito was only three years old. Benito Juárez was raised by an uncle after his grandparents also died; he worked until he was twelve years old, picking corn and herding sheep. Though he could only speak the indigenous language of Zapotec, he took off on his own, walking to Oaxaca City to find his sister, who worked as a cook in the home of Antonio Maza, and was lucky at the time to be hired in the same household. Recognized for his intelligence and quest for knowledge, Benito was accepted to a seminary where he completed studies in record time. Too young to be ordained, he continued his schooling at the Oaxaca Institute of Sciences and Arts and graduated in 1834 with a degree in law. His destiny was political office and he was elected to the city council of Oaxaca in 1831 before he even finished school. In 1841, he was appointed as a civil judge.

    Benito Juárez maintained his position against the United States in the Mexican American War but when he could see it was lost, he refused to assist Santa Anna, which caused the exile of Juárez to New Orleans. With a resistance group, he was able to return to Mexico and eventually structured La Reforma, which after many struggles led to his being acknowledged as the President of Mexico in January 1858. He was later elected in 1867 and again in 1871. He thwarted the invasions of both Prussia and France and has fondly been compared to Abraham Lincoln.

    Benito Juárez will always be known for his position as a progressive reformer, who was committed to democracy; his opposition to the Catholic church and organized religion; and his objective for equal rights for the indigenous natives of Mexico.

    This year, the third Thursday of March falls on the 21st. Puerto Vallarta will have many celebrations on this day for the beloved Benito Juárez.

    Airport Arrivals Just Got Better!

    Few things excite us as much as arriving in Puerto Vallarta. Coming in over the mountains from the north, with an approach toward the sea, where Lic. Gustavo Díaz International Airport has been receiving visitors since November 1954, when Mexicana Airlines landed their first plane in Puerto Vallarta. It’s always a thrill to land and feel the excitement in the air of both tourists and those returning home. Nearly thirty years after the first airplane landed here, we would make our first ascent into Puerto Vallarta, standing in the hot sun, waiting to check through immigration and enter the terminal to find our luggage. Over the years, as we’ve seen the airport expand and watched the many changes and expansions; Lic. Gustavo Díaz International Airport has become very similar to ports all over the world and has lost its back-to-nature charm. We are happy to have restrooms with flushing toilets and air conditioning but we do miss the old days, even if the inconveniences were annoying.

    Since those early days, coming through immigration has become a long and arduous process. Even though the lines move quickly, it seems there are more people in the queue every year. Some have trouble with the forms they’ve been given to fill out while still in flight; others can’t find their passport; many are confused about where to go and how the columns are expected to file through. Delighted to be in Puerto Vallarta, they are anxious for an icy cold beer or margarita.

    Exactly sixty-five years after that first landing in Puerto Vallarta, news has reached us that major improvements for entering the country are under way. There will be an increase of fourteen new customs officers, which is nearly double, during high volume times in December through the duration of high season. Music to our ears is commitment for the acquisition of new equipment for baggage inspection, similar to that used by TSA, higher tech and more efficient. We understand this is temporary until a review will be done to establish service standards, which will expedite arrivals moving through the customs area, as well. Current equipment is archaic compared to many airports of which tourists are departing from, and to where they will return.

    In the discovery that some arriving tourists stand in lines for hours, the Director of the General Customs Administration vowed to make things better by partnering with the government, business sector and airport administration. He is determined to see that moving people around and exercising expediency so that they can get to the beach, will be high on his priority list.

    Many articles have been published in the past couple years about Mexican health care. As someone who has been hospitalized in Puerto Vallarta, both in emergency, as well as scheduled hospital visits, we can attest to the superiority.
    In Puerto Vallarta, we’ve been impressed by the prompt response when calling an ambulance, which are impeccably equipped, shiny clean, and the emergency technicians well trained, attentive and compassionate. In our experience, there was no waiting in the ER, and we were immediately whisked into an observation room, and attended to by a number of physicians.
    A family member chose to have her caesarean-section birth in Puerto Vallarta, moving from Washington State, where she felt rushed by her doctor, who she felt treated her like an uninformed child. In Puerto Vallarta, her obstetrician carefully explained everything, took his time, provided a CD of her ultrasounds and an accommodating birthing experience for the family. This was at less than tenth of the cost back in her hometown.
    Mexico, which comes in second place for healthcare in a list of five countries in a recent survey for retirees, has at least one first-rate hospital in every medium to large city. Puerto Vallarta has several hospitals and there are many specialists who we would highly recommend. Most of them speak English, which is a bonus for those who moved south of the border in their golden years, with few language skills.
    Health insurance is available, both with the expat in mind and typical national plans. Some hospitals take Medicare Advantage plans and we suggest you check with each facility to see what is offered and accepted so in case of an emergency, you know where to go. As a legal resident, you will also have access to the public healthcare system, which is under $500/year.
    Prescriptions in Mexico are astonishingly inexpensive, compared to the United States. Canadians get a break back home on drug costs, but pharmacies in Puerto Vallarta can beat their prices on many items, too. Very few drugs in Puerto Vallarta require a prescription; simply walk into the pharmacy and tell them what you want.
    Doctors in Puerto Vallarta make house calls. It’s routine for your doctor to give you a phone call to inquire how you’re doing, especially following procedures and surgeries. We had an ENT check in with us after treatment of a sinus infection. It isn’t unusual for your doctor to give you a hug or even a kiss on the cheek, and children are welcomed with open arms.

  • Vallarta Adventures: Copper Canyon

    Copper Canyon: If you’re looking for getaway that will take you on a short extended trip from Puerto Vallarta, we recommend Copper Canyon, an amazing tourist activity. It’s not only breathtakingly stunning, but also rich in history with many guide companies to help you travel in style, even on a budget. There are trains rides over the world but our favorite among them is Copper Canyon.

    From Puerto Vallarta, there are several routes to Los Mochis, your starting point, via air, bus or your own vehicle. Bus trips are by far the best deal and also give you a chance to see the countryside from an air-conditioned raised seat. Whatever method you choose to travel, you’ll arrive from Los Mochis to the colonial town of El Fuerte. This is the village made famous by El Zorro, the Mexican Robin Hood, and is the official gateway to the Copper Canyon.

    If you’re a birdwatcher, you will want to work in a river cruise down the El Fuerte River. In El Fuerte, you will board the Copper Canyon Railway for a journey that will take you to Bahuichivo, Cerocahui, Barrancas, villages on the magnificent and breathtaking Copper Canyon route. Don’t miss the Tarahumara cave dwellings. We have a friend who claimed this was the highlight of her trip and can’t wait to return. The attractions of the Copper Canyon are too many to list here; it is said that Nature practiced with the canyons up north and completed her project when she created the Copper Canyon.

    There are activities for all levels of excitement and ability. The world’s longest zipline is at your disposal and for the less courageous, there is the cable car ride. Petroglyphs, like those seen mystically throughout all of the Americas, are easy to see in the Copper Canyon, whereas is many other places a strenuous hike is required. The Taramuhara Boarding School and an old Mayo Indian village hold extra special appeal.

    Group tours aren’t for everyone but it’s really the way to go when visiting the Copper Canyon. If you want to go it alone, make sure you have a comprehensive guide book to lead you along the way. There are several tour companies who will set you up from the moment you leave Puerto Vallarta and we recommend consulting with one for all or part of your trip. Three who have received praise are Superior Tours, Mex-Eco, and Amigo Trails/Three Amigos. The cost per double occupancy ranges from $700 to $1200 USD and some include airfare. You can choose where to depart from; Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara. Prearranged trips do not include tipping or alcohol consumption.
