  • What’s The Most Iconic Place In Vallarta?

The Pier and Puerto Vallarta: Periodically we see photos and old posts of the pier that was replaced by the current modern and highly designed wharf where boats continue to come and go, as they did in more humble times. Some say they like the old pier better but we find those people are similarly unhappy with other changes in Puerto Vallarta.

The day of the inauguration of the new pier, six years ago this month, was one of pride and celebration. We planted ourselves on the beach adjacent to the pier early in the day. We remained there until late at night, when an elegant fireworks show, as is the custom in Puerto Vallarta, completed a day of high level festivity, comprised of a variety of live music, dancing, parasailers, food and drink, and sacred Aztec blessings.

The old pier was one long concrete structure that ran straight out into the ocean, expanded at the end to hold a large amount of fishermen, sightseers and strolling lovers. We dangled our legs over the edge on late nights and listened to the revelry in the distance, combined with the tide crashing against the shore, drowning out all but the most insistent noise.

Boys in baggy shorts would barrel off the side of the old pier, avoiding water taxis picking up travelers to Yelapa and other seaside destinations. Lines that tempted fish hung in the water and buckets for catches sat on the edge. Lovers stole kisses under the moonlight. All these things still occur, including the boats coming and going to pick up passengers, luggage, refrigerators, chainsaws, generators and other supplies for the small villages south of us. Changes is constant.

The new pier is a showcase, and has become an icon of Puerto Vallarta. It is readily recognized by those familiar with the city and has been featured on travel magazine covers. There are times the lights go out around Puerto Vallarta and the pier suffers the same outages; yet it’s an amazingly bright beacon when the storms pass.

For those who grouse about missing the old pier, we get it. We loved the old Vallarta, too. We have learned, however, to live with the progress and appreciate the positive change. Art and education have attracted many newcomers; the reasons to move to Puerto Vallarta are endless. We look forward in the New Year and closing of a decade for more transformations, like the mosaics that have beautified our fair city by the sea. Remember the old and embrace the new.

  • The ‘Must See Try’ Vendors of El Centro, Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta VendorsPuerto Vallarta is full of hidden treasures.  I love to find new and great food at an affordable price.  Below find some of my favorite places and best vendors in Puerto Vallarta to enjoy next time you are in El Centro.

    Tacos –

On the corner of Ignacio Vallarta and Francisco Madero by the Oxxo is a great taco vendor.  They have chicken, shrimp, and several kinds of beef.  Beef is easy to find, but to get all these options is a find!  Combined with a variety of condiments including salsas of every spice level, cheese, cilantro and my favorite grilled scallions make these tacos a must! They will always have specials, so be sure to ask.  This is a great lunch, dinner or late night stop.

    Quesadillas –

On Lazaro Cardenas and Insurgentes right outside of Farmacia Gudalajara is another great stand.  They have huge quesadillas on freshly made tortillas, mounds of cheese and chicken or beef.  One of my favorite things here is the spicy salsa, but beware it is HOT.  All the toppings and condiments you could want will make his a one of a kind quesadilla.  A great stop for dinner or a late night snack.

    Gringas –

On the corner of Ignacio Vallarta and Francisco Madero you will find a very small stand that does tacos and a very yummy Mexican specialty called gringas.  A gringa is two tortillas with pastor (slow cooked pork) and melted cheese in the middle.  Add all the condiments you want and this is a treat! Open most evenings and Late nights and maybe sometimes during the day.  Everyone should try a gringa here in Mexico so be sure to stop by.

    Fish / Shrimp –

At the end of Francisco Madero on the beach is a great fish and shrimp place.  Marlin, shrimp or both on a stick with their special sauce BBQéd right in front of you.  Add salt or lime if you choose, I like it without and enjoy walking the malecon with your lunch.  A great mid day snack or lunch.

    Omelets –

On Cinco de Febrero and Constitucion you can find an amazing omelet.  Enjoy with ham, veggies or chorizo with beans, veggies, jalapenos and tortillas on the side all for 30 pesos! Good food and a lot of it for a great price.  Great breakfast stop to get you going in the morning.

    Tortas –

On Caranza and Constitucion is a wonderful torta (sandwich)stop.  You can choose from chicken, pork or cheese all the meats are pulled and perfectly cooked in broth making them moist and delicious. Add veggies and any toppings you like. Tortas here in Mexico are popular for breakfast as well as lunch so this is a great mid day stop.  Enjoy a torta here with one of their great flavored watered and have a wonderful breakfast or lunch.

    I hope you enjoy!

  • How’s The Heat In Puerto Vallarta?

    It’s Too Darn Hot!

It’s too darn hot It’s too darn hot I’d like to sup with my baby tonight Refill the cup with my baby tonight But I ain’t up to my baby tonight ‘Cause it’s too darn hot …. Ella Fitzgerald

It does get hot in Puerto Vallarta in the summertime. From May to October, the rains come down; creating humidity that rises when the sun shines intensely. Locals and residents love it since it’s much less crowded. Any tourist who can deal with the heat will also find it’s a great time to visit Puerto Vallarta.

When we first came to Puerto Vallarta, there were few places with air conditioning including ours. Houses, restaurants and many other businesses had no windows and usually screens only in bedrooms. Of course, we’ve become spoiled like everyone else. There are other methods besides air conditioning to keep cool. Fans are a primary fixture in all rooms and on the patio. We have seen them nailed to trees with cords wrapped around trunks. Very al fresco. We use box fans in windows; they push the hot air out and create a good breeze and it saves on the electric bill, instead of using the air conditioning.

Cotton sheets are recommended since cotton takes in body heat; the higher the thread count, the better results. Cotton pajamas or one’s birthday suit are a great idea. Some find sleeping in a hammock refreshing, with air circulating all around. We have been known to keep pillow cases and top sheets in the freezer compartment and slipping them on the bed at the last minute.

Rub pulse points with ice cubes (wrists, neck, elbows, groin, ankles, and behind the knees). Icy cold drinks are advised but avoid alcohol; it raises internal temperatures and doesn’t really aid sleeping, contrary to popular belief. Drink LOTS of water; hydration is the best remedy. We see a lot of Pedialyte in the pharmacies in Puerto Vallarta; it’s not just for babies. Replacing electrolytes does wonders for one’s energy. Fresh coconuts, available everywhere, do the best job of replacing body fluid. Suck the water out with a straw for one of the healthiest treats on earth.

We’ve been known to take several showers in a day. Some prefer to hop in and out without actual bathing but we like to wash away the sweat so we go through a lot of soap in the summer months. Freshness helps coolness in many ways.

A cool, damp cloth around the neck and local markets even sell such things in stylish colors and fabrics. Place these in the refrigerator and have more than one ready for a quick cool down.

  • Puerto Vallarta is The Best: Another article on Gringos

    Gringos

Newcomers to Puerto Vallarta are often surprised by how freely the label gringo is tossed around. They liken it to other labels that are seen to be derogatory and in some cases, racist. The word gringo long ago lost its power to insult, and is now how many foreigners have come to describe themselves. Perhaps it’s like the tag queer, which at one time was hurled to offend. Gay people simply owned the word, along with any other branding that existed to identify them and set them apart.

Words are simply words; it’s actions that do harm. Gringos are embraced in Puerto Vallarta and have been catered to for decades, resulting in Puerto Vallarta being one of the primary destinations south of the border.

There’s a border crossing in Lukeville, Arizona, known as Gringo Pass, with a motel and other businesses so denoted, and it has never offended in all the years of its existence. People who drive to Mexico are aware of the friendliness and acceptance they receive from Mexicans and nothing tells it like a gateway named especially for them.

There’s more than one story about how the name gringo came about and what it means. Legend has been passed down over time of US soldiers marching through the dry Sonora Desert, trying to convince themselves they weren’t being sapped of every drop of moisture in their bodies. They were said to have trundled along, singing “green grow the rushes, oh!” from the old English ballad. Hearing this, Mexicans shortened the green grow to gringo. That said, the truth of the matter is probably completely different and more likely comes from an old Spanish word gringo, which translates to gibberish and indicates someone who cannot speak the language well, nor be understood.

In the early 1970’s a book, I Like You, Gringo – But! was a best seller on both sides of the border. The author, Mario (Mike) De La Fuente, the son of a Mexican politician, was raised in the US. He was well known for a number of things before he wrote a book defusing not only the wordgringo, but the implication. De La Fuente was a college football star in Texas, as well as being recognized as a talented baseball player in Mexico. His life was spent on both sides of the international border. He was a successful businessman in Nogales, Arizona, a sportscaster, and an early promoter of the medicinal attributes of marijuana. His motto, which he expounds upon in his book (a fun read, btw), was “Work like a gringo, play like a Mexican.”

  • Vallarta: What The Heck Is A Grackle

    The Amazing Grackle

We love birds and for those who come to Puerto Vallarta with the intention of bird watching, there is a huge and entertaining variety up and down the coastline and into the jungle. Our personal favorite is the Common Grackle. They have similar manners to their northern neighbors, the crows, but have a much wider variety of vocalizations. You never know when they’re copying your ringing cell phone, a speeding car, or perhaps a crow! The grackle is a mimic and will copy whatever they fancy and often leave listeners in confusion.

People visiting Puerto Vallarta often mistake these black birds for crows, but if one takes a closer look, the similarity is evident, but they are very different birds. The North American crow is large, all black and has a big chest. They Common Grackle are more slender, very iridescent and have vivid yellow eyes. Males are bright blue around the head and upper body, while female grackles have a simple black sheen. Crows and grackles are both thieves and will steal food from other birds, out of your garbage or right off your picnic table. They are often considered pests because of their fondness for grains, and farmers carry a heavy grudge against them. They forage everywhere and can be found in bushes, shallow water, parking lots, bird baths and intruding upon the nests of other birds. They eat insects, small frogs and minnows, berries, seed, eggs and have been known to eat smaller birds and even mice. During mating, the male takes on a vampirish look, as he hunches up, unfolds his wings and lurks. They stalk and attack the unwitting female, making a lot of typical Grackle noise.

In Puerto Vallarta, the grackle is known by its Mexican name, zanate. When they were created, they were not given a sound but came into the world mute. They stole their song, according to legend, from the sea turtle. In the fable, it is said they sing the echo of the Seven Passions of Life, which are Love, Hate, Fear, Courage, Joy, Sadness and Anger. Because of their ability to mimic, the Seven Passions of life the Grackle sings of have now taken on the sound of beeping microwaves, passing taxis and tired children. That’s why we love them.

The Common Grackle in Puerto Vallarta is a smart bird and will survive long after many species have been retired, including humans, in all probability.

  • Puerto Vallarta Rocks The Vote

    Voting From Afar

We agree with those in Puerto Vallarta who are intent on discussing the issue that the upcoming election in the United States is going to be one of the most important events in the history of the country. If one party wins, there will be upheaval and chaos; the other party is determined to make serious changes that have been the subject of much debate pre-nomination. The conventions were watched closely around the world with many people having strong opinions and much at stake.

For those who have not yet taken the time to register, there is little time to waste and we know the days can flash by in Puerto Vallarta while lazing around the pool in an attempt to keep cool, sipping on a refreshing daiquiri. Take the time to head to the website www.votefromabroad.org and regardless of your political affiliation, you can easily be signed up to defend your position, even if it’s from abroad.

Don’t be afraid to be informed. Check out information about the candidates on sites other than Facebook. You will find that www.moveon.org leans to the left but has a lot of great data and for a relatively unbiased point of view, go to www.npr.org.

There are sites that can give you issues divided by party, state and local district. A couple of them are http://www.fvap.gov/links and https://www.fvap.gov/citizen-voter and those links will lead you to answers of questions and updated information about your home state and town.

Getting your vote sent in early, at least forty-five days before the election, is imperative. This length of time will be necessary to process your vote and enable officials to get back to you in the case of any questions and resolve any problems they might dicover. We have heard of voters forgetting to place signatures properly, for example.

It’s not necessary to have an address in the United States; this does not disallow you to vote if you are a citizen. Wherever you originally hailed from is the place you will register. Several states and the District of Columbia allow US citizens who have never resided in the United States to register where their parent would be eligible to vote. We encourage first time voters to exercise their rights; eligibility requires US citizens to be 18 years or older.

  • 2016 Property Taxes Are Due On Your Mexican Property

    Dear Homeowners & Property Managers

It is that time of year again and the 2016 property taxes are due on your Mexico properties. Unfortunately, property tax departments throughout Mexico do NOT send out annual tax bills. However, they have become easier to pay for foreign owners with the addition of an online system, anyone with a VISA or Master Card can pay online using the following link:

    http://enlinea.puertovallarta.gob.mx/PredialEnLinea/

Remember that if you pay your property taxes before the last day of February you’ll receive a 15% discount while payments during March only have a 5% discount. Make sure to have your Predial account number ready before you log into the online payment center. You can find this on previous years receipts, it is usually a 4 digit number (could be more) found on the top right hand side of your property tax bill in the box that says “Cuenta”. (billings are filed by number, not by name.)

    predial-example

Another reminder for foreign Mexico property owners, or anyone holding Mexican property is your trust, or “Fideicomiso,” payment, make sure to check when your annual trust fee is due.

Should you have any questions on this or any other matter, feel free to contact us at any time.

    Sincerely,

    Timothy Real Estate Group‘s Team
