  • Puerto Vallarta: Movies Done Right!

    Let’s Go to the Movies!

We love the movie theaters in Puerto Vallarta! Take into consideration how much we pay for a movie back where most of us come from. Film ticket prices do vary somewhat in Canada and the USA but not by much. An average seat for a first run movie in New York City is going to cost you around $16.00. In Los Angeles it’s about the same. Toronto isn’t much better with the average ticket costing about $15 CDN. How much will you pay to see Star Wars in Puerto Vallarta? The average price is $32 pesos. That’s right around $1.50 USD, depending on the fluctuation of the peso on any given day.

The seats in Puerto Vallarta are comfortable, the popcorn is great and some theaters serve alcohol and full-on meals. The theaters and lobbies are clean, plus the aisles are wide and navigable. Some theaters have recliners (in case the movie is boring you, naps are an option.) In the summer, auditoriums are usually full at all times of day, because they also have air conditioning!

We asked our friends what stands out for them in the theaters in Puerto Vallarta and they came up with interesting and helpful responses. The food gets raves at La Isla and a special shout-out to their friendly and courteous staff. The VIP Theater is considered state-of-the-art and many think their sounds systems superior, but Cinemax at Galerias seems to have the best popcorn in town and their sound system gets high marks, too. We have sadly experienced movies where the volume is turned up so high, we nearly felt our hair blowing; then again, we have also been exposed to the low level of decibels where we have strained to hear actors and missed important dialogue.

Listings for movies in Puerto Vallarta can be found in the local newspapers and are almost always correct. The best way to find listings and times is online and each theater has their own site. If a movie is listed with SUB, that means it’s in English and has Spanish subtitles. If it says DOB, you better speak Spanish. All kid movies are in Spanish and are dubbed.

Movie night in Puerto Vallarta is an inexpensive date with family, children or your significant movie buff partner. The only complaints we picked up in our survey were mainly a couple of small gripes about cheap wine, and not enough ice in drinks, but we’ve suffered much worse than that.

The best thing is the unbeatable price and everyone agrees, it’s one of the bargains that make living here a real treat.

  • Puerto Vallarta – Constitutional Holiday

    Constitution Day

Puerto Vallarta loves any day when there’s a reason to celebrate. Constitution Day, on February 5th is recognized at the official date when the Mexican constitution was created in 1917. Drafted by Santiago Queretaro, the Public Constitution of the United Mexican States, or the Fundamental Law of Magna Carta, was signed by Venustiano Carranza and has been observed as a national holiday since that time.

Mexico attained liberty from Spain in 1810 but it took nearly a century for a concrete constitution to be formed, with many drafts in the meantime. The war took a lot of steam out of Mexico, creating a downfall of the economy, widespread unemployment and insufferable economic instability. The first stable constitution was unacceptable, not only as a copy of the constitution of the United States but also for the promotion of absolute sovereignty. It wasn’t until 1957 that the constitution was amended to prohibit foreigners from taking over the Mexican government! Though it has stabilized considerably, a huge issue that wasn’t addressed for decades was racial turmoil. Mexico is long on determination and grit, but there has always been a foundation of disagreement, not unlike other nations with vast diverse populations.

Schools are given a holiday on February 5th but in the interim, they study the constitution and every student in Puerto Vallarta is expected to have a firm understanding of the fundamentals.

One of the biggest achievements of the Mexican constitution is the freedom of religion. There was a time that Catholics were persecuted and slaughtered due to their allegiance to the Catholic Church, a little known fact for non-Mexicans. Prior to the administration of Venustiano Carranza, and the writing of the constitution as we know it today, the government focused largely on annihilating the influence of the Catholic Church over Mexicans. The Cristero War was one of armed civilians at war with the government, resulting in thousands of innocent deaths. The current constitution protects Catholics and all other religious beliefs, the rights of the press and media, and the freedom of speech.

In Puerto Vallarta, Constitution Day follows quickly on the heels of the Charro celebrations and these events coincide on many levels. It’s a great time to brush up on your Mexican history, find out what all the excitement is about, and have some fun in the process. For readers we recommend The Death of Artemio Cruz by Carlos Fuentes (the translated version by Alfred J. MacAdam) for fiction; History of the Making of Mexico by William Prescott for non-fiction, which will take you from the conquering of Cortés all the day to modern day.

  • Back To My Beloved Puerto Vallarta

I recently returned to Puerto Vallarta to spend a 10-day Thanksgiving holiday with my partner and 4 other close friends. It had been a long seven-year hiatus since I last visited this beautiful vacation destination. It was great to be back!

What I love most about this Mexican seaport, besides its beautiful and remote beaches, are the people. The locals are friendly, informative, having a simple and authentic approach to life.

Taniel Chemsian of Timothy Real Estate Group recommended we stay at a villa named Villa Azul Celeste in Lower Conchas Chinas. His suggestion couldn’t have been a more perfect and ideal vacation property for me and my friends.

    View from Amapas Romantic Zone
    View from Amapas Romantic Zone

The property is about 2 miles south of downtown Puerto Vallarta and a few minutes taxi or bus ride to virtually anywhere you wanted to go. The villa was secluded and right on the water with its own pool and private beach. The staff was incredible; our private cook prepared delicious, Mexican specialties. Whatever we wanted we received. One thing to remember is if you want fresh cranberries for your Thanksgiving dinner, ask the staff to purchase them from the market early since they are imported and sell out fast.

A lot has changed over the seven years; there are more conveniences such as Costco and Wal-Mart, new shopping malls hosting prominent department stores, great new restaurants and incredible new condominium developments for someone wanting to purchase a home in this tropical paradise.

A fabulous new steak house in the Marina Vallarta recommended by Taniel Chemsian is a place called Sonora Grill. The ambiance was inviting, sophisticated and modern. The quality of the meat was incredible and the price point was reasonable.

The new Malecon, where only pedestrians are allowed to roam freely, now provides for a relaxing and comfortable venue for a little shopping and having a great lunch. The Malecon is now connected to the famous Playa Los Muertos by the new Rio Cuale pedestrian bridge.

Puerto Vallarta has developing nicely and has created a beautiful place to not only vacation but an ideal town at which to retire. During my stay I viewed a fine and affordable selection of condominium properties with Taniel. I was amazed at what your money can buy here vs. a property on any American coastline. There simply is no comparison.

I am 53 years old and definitely could see myself spending half my time in Puerto Vallarta and the other half in San Diego where I live. At these value prices, it can be easily done.

There is one more thing that I always do when I visit Puerto Vallarta and that is to take a private boat or water taxi to a more secluded beach. In the past I have been to Yelapa and love it because it is quiet and quaint with a beautiful old church and pleasant restaurants.

This time we went to a beach called Las Animas, which I highly recommend as well. The water is clear and pristine, with white sand stretching out. The beach is also dotted with 3-4 restaurants, which is just perfect. It is a wider and bigger beach than Yelapa with chase lounges and tables setup with white tablecloths.

There is nothing like spending a Sunday afternoon with great friends, sipping tequila, eating ceviche and listening to a guitar player singing old Latin pasillos and ballads. It was truly magical and a moment in time I will always remember.

Once again I thank Taniel Chemsian who has lived in Puerto Vallarta for 10 years serving the community for recommending that special day to me. Muchisimas Gracias!

  • Puerto Vallarta Living: Health Tips

    Health Tips When Traveling

We love to eat, whether we’re in Puerto Vallarta or anywhere else in the world. So far we’ve been very lucky to not experience Montezuma’s Revenge or Delhi Belly, but it’s mostly about using common sense. You can partake in the local fares and not worry about spending your vacation in a bathroom, or worse yet, emergency room. Here’s how: Drink water, lots of it and make sure it’s purified (bottled or filtered). When flying, avoid coffee, sugary drinks and alcohol. They dehydrate you and the most important thing when traveling by air is to stay hydrated.
When flying, get up and move around as much as your flight allows. We advise sitting without crossed legs, however unless you’re in First Class, that’s not likely possible anyway. Blood clots, especially in older travelers, can be very dangerous. Eat protein and avoid loads of carbs; you’ll feel much better. If you don’t take vitamins, this is a good time to start. We take a probiotic every morning. Eat fresh and don’t frequent establishments that look grubby or unkempt. Make sure you aren’t eating pre-prepared food. Yogurt is beneficial and you will see it in different forms in Puerto Vallarta; Yakult is everywhere and provides protection for the tummy.
Wash your hands and keep them off your face and out of your mouth. Hand sanitizers are great for bacteria but they don’t do the job on viruses. Keep your hands clean, every chance you get, with soap and hot water.
We recommend getting in shape before you take a trip. Walking is the best way to see things and there are a lot of stairs and hills in Puerto Vallarta, and you can expect to find them when you travel. If you are a runner, swimmer, biker, or whatever your healthy sport is, do a little research of your destination ahead and you will find the best locations and paths.
We always travel with moleskin. It is readily available in any pharmacy, as well as Body Glide. Both products can make life a lot more pleasant if you’re walking a lot. Blisters and chafing can be avoided, and Body Glide works for rubbing sandal straps, knapsacks and backpacks and is a must for anyone using a wetsuit. Be sure to have well fitting shoes, more than one pair.
Don’t overdo, over-drink, or over-think. Get enough rest each night to start out your next day fresh. Being inebriated can get you into all sorts of trouble, so limit your intake and don’t go wild. If you’re traveling in a country or town you aren’t familiar with, you’ll see things that aren’t normal to your senses. Don’t jump to conclusions and if you think you’re witnessing something odd or unusual, ask a person in a reasonable position of authority. If you feel ill, find out how to see a doctor or what types of walk-in clinics are available. Chances are the cost will be surprisingly low, someone will speak your language, and putting things off can make you really sick. Your stomach may be upset for a day or two in any foreign place; take this is stride. You’re probably adjusting. Don’t drink a lot and stick to mild foods; likely you’ll feel better in a matter of hours.
    Que es cómo es.

  • Puerto Vallarta: Taking A Panga To Yelapa!

    Take a Panga to Yelapa!

There are people who ask if Mexico is safe. It’s a question that actually upsets a lot of locals and residents here in this relatively peaceful country. Yes, there are problems, just as there are in our extremely divided neighbor to the north. However, there is very little danger to anyone visiting Mexico City, or Puerto Vallarta, or the little village of Yelapa, which we are going to promote to you in this blog.

There was much press given recently to a family’s death in Tulum, on the east coast of Mexico. It took days to find out they had died from accidental gas poisoning, but not until the news had a heyday speculating on all sorts of reasons for their sad and tragic demise. This seems to be the norm for media attention to Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta, where some criminals may come to hide and yet are always apprehended.

Smarter Travel, a popular website for those who enjoy moving around the globe and discovering new and exciting places, last month declared Yelapa one of thirteen safest places in all of Mexico. A short ride from Puerto Vallarta in an open boat called a panga, Smarter Travel makes the claim that Yelapa is “Mexico’s last authentic beach town.” Though that may be a slight exaggeration, it certainly holds an amount of truth, enough to make it worth at least a day trip to form your own opinion. It’s not only the great seafood and beaches; the prices in Yelapa are not inflated like a lot of other exotic destinations. You can also find accommodations that won’t break your bank.

The best place to hitch a ride in a delightful panga (which is simply a large open skiff, flat-bottomed, with several rows of sturdy seats) is down by the pier in Old Town Puerto Vallarta. If you don’t see the signs, ask anyone in the beachside restaurants and they will gladly guide you to a vendor who will secure your passage. If it’s a daytrip you plan, we recommend purchasing round trip tickets and making sure to note the time the boat leaves to head back to Puerto Vallarta. Not that it would be awful to be stuck in this charming little village overnight. There are a growing number of small boutique hotels, guest homes and Airbnb’s.

Traveling both to and from Yelapa, your chance of seeing whale, dolphin, manta ray and other exciting sea life is well documented. Other lovely sites are the beach boys who assist the captain and give more seats to tourists by hanging off the side of the panga while underway. They help passengers with luggage and embarkation.

If spending the night, bring a flashlight. Though electricity came to Yelapa a few years ago, the jungle gets very dark once the sun goes down. Pathways leading to restaurants, the ever famous Yacht Club and abodes are not well lit.

  • PUERTO VALLARTA REOPENING TO TOURISTS: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Puerto Vallarta will be opening to tourists starting in June with the announcement by Governor Enrique Alfaro that hotels and motels can once again begin welcoming guests.

*Important Note: The reopening of tourism activities is dependent on the approval of the Mexico Federal Government.  Be sure to check with local and state authorities before traveling.

After a decision taken 2 weeks ago to gradually reopen Puerto Vallarta businesses, various national and international airlines announced the return of flights to our popular Mexico Beach Vacation destination in June, and many hotels & resorts are preparing to receive visitors.

Airlines Offering International Flights to Puerto Vallarta:

    • Aeromexico confirmed that it would be relaunching flights to and from Canada and the United States starting June.
    • Air Canada is expected to restart operations on July 4th, with one direct flight from Vancouver to Puerto Vallarta per week.
    • Alaska Airlines will resume daily flights to Vallarta from Los Angeles starting May 31st.
    • American Airlines has already resumed daily flights from Dallas to Puerto Vallarta.
    • Delta Airlines will resume operations in the first week of June with a gradual increase in weekly flights from Los Angeles to Puerto Vallarta.
    • Sun Country will resume operations to Puerto Vallarta in July, with bi-weekly flights from Dallas that will gradually increase to daily.]

Airlines Offering Domestic Flights to Puerto Vallarta:

    • Aeromar will resume daily flights from Mexico City in June.
    • Aeroméxico already operates three weekly flights between Mexico City and Vallarta, from June, flights will be daily.
    • Interjet continues to offer twice-weekly flights between Puerto Vallarta and Mexico City, but will resume daily flights in the second week of June.
    • Magnicharters will resume operations with twice-weekly flights to Mexico City, and daily flights to Monterrey, starting June 11.
    • TAR will resume flights with different frequencies from Guadalajara, Aguascalientes, Querétaro and San Luís Potosí, starting June 1.
    • Vivaerobus continues to operate two flights per week to Mexico City and another two to Tijuana, from June 1 it will resume daily frequencies.
    • Volaris will increase the frequency of flights from Mexico City and Tijuana as of June 1.

Several Hotels in Puerto Vallarta Set to Open June

While many Puerto Vallarta hotels and resorts will remain closed, some are expected to open their doors during the first week of June, while others are waiting until July or August or have not yet determined when they plan to open.

Before resuming operations all members of the hospitality industry must obtain a Coronavirus Free certificate issued by Intedya, an international company specialized in consulting and auditing risk management systems and regulatory compliance that guarantees the correct implementation of the new health protocols, which include:

    • Periodic disinfection of rooms and public spaces.
    • Social distancing.
    • Use of masks by all the staff.
    • Delivery of an essential care kit to visitors.
    • Temporary closure of common areas (swimming pools, buffet restaurants, and event/meeting rooms).

After more than seven weeks of being closed, the restaurants on the Malecon in Puerto Vallarta opened their doors on Monday after reaching an agreement with the municipal government.

As the #StayAtHome order issued by federal, state and local authorities has not yet been lifted, all Puerto Vallarta beaches, most of the Malecon, shopping malls, bars and nightclubs, entertainment venues, gyms and spas, and most all public spaces, including parks and recreational areas, will remain closed until further notice. In addition, the wearing of face masks when out in public is mandatory.

With the announcement by Governor Alfaro, hotels are quickly preparing to open but must comply with sanitary measures so most hotels will not be ready until June 1st.

Restrictions will include closing common areas of the hotel, such as restaurants, lounges and pools until the state stay at home order is lifted.

The outlook is not flattering for this year in tourist terms due to the effects of COVID-19, said Heriberto Sánchez, leader of the National Association of Airport Transport Companies. He said that there are some predictions that groups of tourists will arrive in the coming weeks. Travel agencies from the United States have already come to review the situation in Puerto Vallarta to see if they could arrive in June.

Heriberto Sánchez highlighted that hotels must start to comply with international protocols and health standards before they open their doors.  Sánchez stressed that although people want to travel, they are expecting high sanitary measures have taken by tourist destinations to keep them safe from contracting Covid-19.

  • Where Do You See Crocs In Puerto Vallarta?

Low season in Puerto Vallarta seems to bring out our local large reptiles. We attribute this to a typical phenomenon, in which the more populated an area with people, the less likely to spot wildlife. Not that crocs are shy; they do make appearances year-round. As we have said before, the rivers travel to the ocean; therefore crocodiles can make connections to most tributaries and swimming areas. It’s wise to know the facts and stay alert. Very few incidents have been reported in Puerto Vallarta over the decades, but each and every one gets a major amount of attention, even if it’s only a crocodile crossing the road or cruising between yachts in the marina.

The common species seen in the Puerto Vallarta area is the American Crocodile. This particular groups’ milieu is wide and long, throughout Mexico; the lower coastal Pacific islands; Central America and the northern sections of South America. They can be found up to twenty miles inland in the states of Nayarit and Jalisco, where visitors to Puerto Vallarta might be inclined to roam.

The male American crocodile has been measured up to nearly twenty feet. That’s a big croc and if you see one, do your best to allow him as much space as possible. Though crocodiles have no natural predators, other than humans, it’s wise to keep some kind of barrier between them and us. They are not known to be aggressive and attacks on people are quite rare but we leave it to others to test the theory. Oddly enough, reports over the decades of aggression towards humans have usually dealt with trespassers, turtle egg poachers and, quite often, other illegal activities. Crocodiles normally hunt at night and prefer limited moonlight but disruption of their normal habits, due to domestic interference, is not a great surprise. Given that, we are aware of instances in which off-leash dogs have been snapped up by crocodiles. When a dog approaches a crocodile, barking and snarling, the reptile is going to be prone to protect himself. Apparently dogs are a real delicacy for crocs, so it’s always a good idea to keep Fido leashed and in line.

The American Crocodile is the only one of his species that thrives in both fresh and salt water, which seems to be the result of salt glands under their tongue. This is an unusual attribute, according to our cold-blooded research team.

There are places to visit crocodiles in Puerto Vallarta, view them in their habitat and learn about their routines and behaviors. The University of Costa Preserve, close to the Flamingos Development and golf Course (where you see the huge golf ball from the highway); and Estero el Salado Sanctuary, north of Galeria Liverpool, which is across from the Cruise Ship Terminal.

Bring your camera, wear sturdy shoes and a good amount of mosquito repellent.
