  • Southwest Airlines Begins Service from Houston to Puerto Vallarta

    Travellers to Puerto Vallarta from Texas and the Midwest and Southwest states have had limited airline options ….. mostly expensive.

    A new player is entering the market from this region – Southwest Airlines is beginning service to Puerto Vallarta from Houston on October 15. They will fly from their Houston hub which is Hobby Airport. Hobby is smaller and more manageable than the main Houston airport, George Bush International. Plus connections on Southwest Airlines to about 40 US cities.

    Check out schedules at www.Southwest.com. Southwest is famous for low fares so this will bring some much-needed competition to the market.

    Flying with Your Pet Onboard

    There have been some new regulations in the past year regarding flying with in-cabin pets. We want to keep everyone updated as it would be a miserable experience to arrive at the airport, with Fifi and Fido ready to go, only to be told they won’t be allowed on the plane.

    Several major airlines have tightened their guidelines on flying with pets and service animals, both of which can fall into seriously different categories. There have been some regrettable incidents with passengers vs. pets and this has unfortunately caused airlines to take a second look at their procedures. Earlier this year on a Delta flight, a military veteran was mauled by a 50 pound dog that was sitting in a fellow passenger’s lap (an egregious departure from Delta policy) resulting in a lawsuit against both the airline and dog owner. Delta has banned pit bulls and animals under the age of four months, regardless of whether they are claimed as pets, service or support animals. Sadly, much of this has been caused by travelers avoiding fees for their pets by claiming them as certified support animals. Certification is as simple as going to a website and printing out a document.

    There have been incidents that have hit the media with little restraint on what is actual news, but in one case a passenger at Schönefeld Airport in Germany insisted his fifteen inch boa constrictor was a support animal, after he tried to slip it onboard unnoticed in his pants. When customs pulled him aside, curious to the unnatural bulge in his trousers, all joking was put aside and the animal was confiscated and taken to a rescue center, the passenger boarded and was given a hefty fine, giving a whole new meaning to support.

    This doesn’t mean you can’t bring your furry friends while vacationing or traveling to and from your home in Puerto Vallarta. This isn’t going to stop over a million people annually who travel with their pets, and bona fide service and emotional support animals. What it does mean is that you need to be fully aware of the rules and regulations of each airline of which you book tickets. All of the airlines spell out their rules in great detail on their websites, so there is no excuse in not having the knowledge. If you have further questions, make use of the 1-800 number.

    More precise rules now govern what is regarded as a service animal. They are not considered pets, and must be [individually trained or able to provide assistance to a person
    with a disability] and be able to prove if so demanded, according to the Department of Transportation. These animals can fly for free, just as an airline wouldn’t charge someone for bringing an oxygen supply on board. However, with both items, there are certifications and standards to be followed.

    All airlines have taken these new rules into consideration and have made many changes; we highly recommend calling the airline directly to be absolutely certain before booking your flight to Puerto Vallarta. If you are traveling with a support animal, such as a guide dog, it is imperative you contact the airline at least 48 hours in advance. They will let you know their requirements, which will include certification from a medical or mental health professional, as well as veterinarian certificates that confirm the health of the animal and up-to-date vaccinations.

    It does get hot in Puerto Vallarta in the summertime. From May to October, the rains come down; creating humidity that rises when the sun shines intensely. Locals and residents love it since it’s much less crowded. Any tourist who can deal with the heat will also find it’s a great time to visit Puerto Vallarta.

    When we first came to Puerto Vallarta, there were few places with air conditioning including ours. Houses, restaurants and many other businesses had no windows and usually screens only in bedrooms. Of course, we’ve become spoiled like everyone else. There are other methods besides air conditioning to keep cool. Fans are a primary fixture in all rooms and on the patio. We have seen them nailed to trees with cords wrapped around trunks. Very al fresco. We use box fans in windows; they push the hot air out and create a good breeze and it saves on the electric bill, instead of using the air conditioning.

    Cotton sheets are recommended since cotton takes in body heat; the higher the thread count, the better results. Cotton pajamas or one’s birthday suit are a great idea. Some find sleeping in a hammock refreshing, with air circulating all around. We have been known to keep pillow cases and top sheets in the freezer compartment and slipping them on the bed at the last minute.

    Rub pulse points with ice cubes (wrists, neck, elbows, groin, ankles, and behind the knees). Icy cold drinks are advised but avoid alcohol; it raises internal temperatures and doesn’t really aid sleeping, contrary to popular belief. Drink LOTS of water; hydration is the best remedy. We see a lot of Pedialyte in the pharmacies in Puerto Vallarta; it’s not just for babies. Replacing electrolytes does wonders for one’s energy. Fresh coconuts, available everywhere, do the best job of replacing body fluid. Suck the water out with a straw for one of the healthiest treats on earth.

    We’ve been known to take several showers in a day. Some prefer to hop in and out without actual bathing but we like to wash away the sweat so we go through a lot of soap in the summer months. Freshness helps coolness in many ways.

    A cool, damp cloth around the neck and local markets even sell such things in stylish colors and fabrics. Place these in the refrigerator and have more than one ready for a quick cool down.

    Animal studies have not shown teratogenic effects, but caution is still warranted. Women of childbearing age taking Ambien from https://rosarydental.com/ambien-online/ should discontinue the medication if pregnancy is planned or suspected, weighing the potential benefits against the risks.

  • Vallarta, Whats in Lo de Marcos?

    Hidden beauties can be found along Highway 200 on the way to or from Puerto Vallarta. One of these gems is Lo de Marcos, a small Mexican beach town that has not been fully discovered. There are no looming hotels, large boat marinas, beeping taxis or traffic jams. Quiet and relaxing are the reviews we have received regarding Lo de Marcos.

    With an abundance of RV parks with names like Pretty Sunset, Lo de Marcos is a great place to find simplicity, peacefulness and a lack of grandeur. About an hour north of the airport in Puerto Vallarta, Lo de Marcos is easily accessible by buses that board along the highway and are well marked.

    Fondly referred to as the French Quarter, due to the abundance of French Canadians who live there, Lo de Marcos is winter home to Canadians, North Americans and plenty of Europeans, as well.

    Our first introduction to inhabitants of this unique Mexican town was at a weekly meeting, held in Puerto Vallarta on weeknights. They weren’t bothered in the least by driving all the way into town (as they stated) for the evening. It was their habit to have dinner and then head back up the highway.

    Given that, we find Saturdays a good time to journey up the coast for a day visit to the Lo de Marcos tianguis, the market held once a week in the zocalo (main square). Offerings include produce and a food court, all organic and beautiful arts and crafts with emphasis on everything being natural or handmade. We wouldn’t miss the chance stroll to the pristine beach, Playa Lo de Marcos, after our shopping is done. We love to watch the surfers before we pass on to El Atracadero, the neighborhood dock where locals fish for dinner. A short distance south of the pier you will find the piscines, tide pools where you can observe sea life in the form of tiny fish and creatures of the ocean.

    An added bonus is a marvelous golf course only fifteen minutes up the road from Lo de Marcos at Campo de Esuenos (Field of Dreams). With a green fee of approximately

    $15, it includes a new par 4 and 5 with an island green. Visitors will love the clubhouse with excellent food and occasional entertainment with a small dance floor.

    Horse trips are also available at Lo de Marcos and one only needs to inquire at one of the many palapas on the beach to be directed to a local vaquero who will happily lead tours into the jungle and surrounding areas. Buen viaje!

  • Puerto Vallarta’s Zocalo

    The local zocalo, (from Spanish zócalo socle and from Italian zoccolo) is the main square in any Mexican town, Puerto Vallarta being no exception, and is often the center of much local activity. At “El Jardin Principal”(The Main Garden) as the local plaza is called, on any given evening, decades seem to melt away while gentlemen have their shoes shined, grandmothers feed pigeons, while children run around flapping make-believe wings, and couples dance to music from the kiosko (gazebo). Sundays are reserved for the municipal band to entertain locals and tourists alike. An evening walk, after a late day Mass is the highlight of many families, who stop for treats such as fresh fried churros, ice cream, cotton candy, cheesy corn and other delights in the zocalo and along the Malecón.

    On the eve of Dia de Independencia (Independence Day/September 16) this popular plaza will be packed with revelers, waiting for the mayor to come out on the balustrade and give a long-winded, usually repetitive speech, ending with a crowd arousing Viva Mexico! Good times for all involved, with more than the usual abundance of vendors selling dinners, desserts, snacks, trinkets and memorabilia. The night ends with an amazing fireworks display; the Malecón will be full of visitors until the wee hours of the morning and there won’t be much sleep for anyone in the general area.

    The most famous zocalo is, of course, in Mexico City, rich with history, tragedy and triumph. Though the zocalo in Puerto Vallarta is quite small in comparison, it is also a well known landmark, meeting place and gathering of special events. It is the heart of all grand festivals like the Christmas Guadalupana (the processions to the cathedral, which take place the first 12 days of December); the Sidewalk Art Competition in November; major holidays such as the aforementioned Independence Day and Revolution Day, Children’s Day, and New Year’s Eve and many other celebrations.

    In an effort to maintain the appeal and originality of the downtown village, neon signs are not permitted, the streets are to remain in the old cobblestone style and city regulations make an effort to regulate architecture and other details. Nothing symbolizes tradition quite as well as the La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, the Church of our Lady of Guadalupe. With her gorgeous bell tower and luxurious interior, the street and steps to the east lead directly through the front door and to the altar.

    The Municipal Building and Tourist Office are also found on the north side of the zocalo and warmly welcome visitors with any inquiries about the city and surrounding area.

  • Puerto Vallarta – Biblioteca Los Mangos

    Puerto Bazar at Biblioteca Los Mangos

    In an old mango orchard in Puerto Vallarta, on Avenida Francisco Villa a dream came true when the library was built with the help of community support. Opened in November of 1996 and host to guests of many countries, there are books in English, Spanish and other languages. Audio and visual services are also available. Free to the public and those who live in Puerto Vallarta (even short-timers) can get a library card. Your passport and a copy of a utility bill is all you need.

    We pass along our used books to the library once we find we have a bit of a pile, and they always receive them with gratefulness and a big smile. If you have books gathering dust and at risk of mildew, get them to the biblioteca, where they will lovingly lend and take care of them. They accept books in all languages.

    You’ll find other things happening in and around this rustic building. Ballet classes, piano, yoga, sculpture and painting classes; all very affordable. Cultural activities, art shows and community events take place inside and out on the expansive lawn.

    This weekend, March 16th and 17th, you won’t want to miss the Third Annual Puerto Bazar at Biblioteca Los Mangos! Here is a chance to get some Mexican coolture. There will be entrepreneurs from Puerto Vallarta and surrounding areas, showing off art, design, music, dance and a diversity of many talents. Some contributors will include Sandy Ideas; Peekabow Mx; Je Suis; JUST-Alma PV; Little Maravillas; Sunflower Beuaty Care; Hilo & el Mar; ZARU Catering & Eventos, plus many more.

    Entrance is free, with a selection of delicious food and drinks for sale. There will be family workshops, continual shows throughout the day, and something for everyone. It’s a relaxing place to be on the weekend, away from the crowds and hubbub. You can bring dogs, too, but please keep them on leash.

    The Library is located at Avenida Francisco Villa 1000, Colonia Los Mangos. Busses, taxis and Uber will all know this destination, just south of Costco.

    Normal open hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 9 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 6 pm. Closed Sundays.

  • Vallarta Has a 4 Star Restaurant Scene

    Fine Dining In and Around Puerto – We are often asked for recommendations for dinner (and breakfast and lunch) and there are many great restaurants to choose from in Puerto Vallarta; it’s hard to pin down our favorite. Tre Piatti is high on the list of best places to eat in Puerto Vallarta. Chefs eat here. The food gets constant raves for quality and imagination. They change their menu with fresh and exciting items every two weeks. The kitchen at Tre Piatti shops and supports locally, so your produce is in season and picked at the peak. Dishes at Tre Piatti are eye-catching, innovative and delicious. The service is excellent; they treat every customer as if they’ve come home to dinner. The wait staff are gracious, and don’t be surprised if the chef welcomes you himself and gives you a big hug when it’s time to say goodnight.

    We love Vista Grill/El Dorado at Los Muertos beach. The names switch up for lunch or dinner but the food is always exceptional. Evenings at this location are breathtaking and it’s a great place to show off to guests, with the pier as a stunning foreground to jaw dropping sunsets. The service here is one of the best in Puerto Vallarta. For a change of scenery, we love the Marina. An evening stroll to view who’s in port, admire the fancy gorgeous yachts and maybe spy a crocodile. We dine at Tintoque and slip into an environment so similar to Mexico City, you might be there. The menu changes here, too so expect surprises with each visit. We do love the inventiveness. Accents on flavor and fresh décor, they offer four to five specials daily. It’s a tough choice to make, so you know you’ll return again and again.

    Go a bit further north and you’ll find the best restaurants within a several hundred kilometer range. There is nothing close to this quality or service unless you go to Mexico City. The Spice Market, a Jean Georges Vongericthen restaurant at the W Hotel isn’t simply dining out. It’s a lifetime experience, one that you’ll want to repeat as often as possible. The stickler is you must be a guest of the W Hotel to make a reservation. You can patronize this fine establishment as the guest of a guest or find yourself a good connection, but we do recommend making the effort. The other is Carolina’s at the St. Regis, and the same goes for privacy factor. This is haute cuisine and you can’t really find anything comparable within the confines of Puerto Vallarta.

  • Speaking Spanish In Puerto Vallarta

    Don’t Be Embarrassed

    While ordering meals and drinks, getting around town and shopping for groceries, you can probably get by speaking English in Puerto Vallarta, yet Mexicans love when you try to speak Spanish. They consider it respectful and it makes it seem like you really want to be here. It’s good to know a few words however the best efforts can sometimes get one in trouble, or in some cases, cause an uncomfortable situation. One of the most commonly misunderstood words in the Spanish language is embarazada. Though it sounds like the English word for embarrass or embarrassed, it actually means pregnant! Estoy embarazada means I am pregnant, not I am embarrassed and when spoken by a male can be even more awkward. No worries however, since Mexicans have a great sense of humor, will laugh with people rather than at them… and you have opened the opportunity for a valuable language lesson. People in Puerto Vallarta love to share their language with foreigners and you will find many language schools for those willing  to communicate in the area they’ve decided to visit… or live. Lessons are intensive or as brief as eager students are willing to endeavor.

    Back in the Mad Men days, some brilliant Don-Draper-type came up with an ad campaign clever enough to make any Adman very proud…all but for the exception it was potentially disastrous for the company represented, once it was translated from its native English. It took Parker Pen months to pull the ads from the Mexican market. While advertising their product in Mexico, Parker Pen made the same claim they did in their English worded ads: “Won’t leak in your pocket and embarrass you.” Translated that was “No te embarazará chorreándose en tu bolsillo” which means “Won’t leak in your pocket and impregnate you.”

    We have found it best to consult our friends in Puerto Vallarta when we have a question about language. We find that relying to travel sites is not always the best idea for advice when it comes to matters that may just get a little too personal.

  • Christmas Traditions in Puerto Vallarta

    There is nothing quite as Mexican as a ritual and when it comes to such, Puerto Vallarta celebrates with joy and earnest. What better time to incorporate Pre-Hispanic customs than the birth of Christ, so observed by the Catholic Church.

    Offerings of the gods, practiced long before the arrival and conquering of the Spaniards, over time have been adapted and modified to align with Vatican tradition. The posadas were created by the church in an effort to evangelize those whom they had invaded and it was easy to persuade a ritual-rich civilization with the stories of Jesus and Mary, seeking a place for the birth of the Christ child.

    Though from region to region there are variations in some of the dishes, the main menu maintains a strong similarity throughout Mexico. Puerto Vallarta is very involved in Christmas celebrations for the entire month of December and food is at its very heart.

    With a wealth of tropical fruits, everything from desserts to the famous ponche (punch) is rich in quality and good health. Along with peanuts, full of protein, snacking is not about junk food. Children get some of their best vitamins this time of year.

    There is, however, a lot of sugar, as well. Cane sugar, which in Mexico, is in its purest form, literally drips from much of the Christmas fare. A drink served with a spoon, the traditional punch is so sweet, it’s almost painful to the mouth but there is not stopping us from imbibing. Tejocotes, sugar cane, peanuts and mandarins seem to fall out of the sky this time of year.

    Tamales are the primary food served all the way through December, into January, when the arrival of the Three Kings is celebrated on Epiphany, the sixth day of the month. The famous Roscón de Reyes or Rosca de Reyes (King’s Ring) is shared on this day, complete with figurines of the baby baked inside. Tamales show up again on February 2, on Dia de la Candelaria or Candlemas, which is when the Baby Jesus was presented at the temple. This is a very important day in many Mexican families, when their candles are brought to the church to be blessed. The nativity figure of the Christ child is also blessed on this day and it’s all celebrated with a feast. Whoever bit into the plastic baby Jesus on January 6 is in charge of making and serving the tamales. Wrapped in corn husks and kept in steamers until serving time, they are composed of everything from meat and fish to vegetables and fruit, especially pineapple. These meals, as most traditional Mexican food, do not require utensils but are all considered “finger foods.”

  • Puerto Vallarta: Wash up!

    We can’t be reminded enough of this simple deterrent to the flu and other illnesses, which assault Puerto Vallarta at the same rate as the remainder of the world outside paradise. The initial recommendation is to get an annual flu shot. The more people get vaccinated, the more are protected and create herd immunity. This year, winter 2017 -2018, it is suggested to not use the nasal spray application (live attenuated influenza vaccine or LAIV), which is often used for children. Injectable shots are more effective, painless, and available in Puerto Vallarta. There are different strains for age, pregnant women and adults. Standard flu shots are the most common; high-dose for older people and those made with adjuvant, also for older people. Since there are constantly changing viruses, annual shots are highly advised. This year we are protected from three to four circulating flues on this continent, depending on whether we have received the quadrivalent or trivalent.

    For those planning to travel to or from Puerto Vallarta, consider it takes approximately two weeks for the antibodies to do their job, so plan accordingly. Even though October is the primary month to get vaccinated against the flu, it will be beneficial to protect yourself all through the season. It’s never too late. Flu season can last as late as May.
