It is essential you select the best agent for you as you begin the process of selling your home. While you may select an agent because you know them or like them, you should also look for their experience and expertise. Do they work for a reputable company? Yes, it does make a difference! A reputable firm is the best protection of your investment. Do they belong to AMPI? AMPI’s association of realtors in Puerto Vallarta expects the highest level of professionalism from their agents. While your agent should be excellent in their field of real estate, you should enjoy their company. You will be working together as your agent manages the selling process to assist you in reaching your goal of a successful sale.
If you are shopping for Real Estate in the Puerto Vallarta area from out-of-town, you may want a local real estate agent to assist you in locating a property that meets your criteria. We have created a unique Mexico Real Estate Buyer’s Guide for you. Our guide is designed to save you time and get the best price on the market.
For anyone who asks, if ever pulled over by an officer of the law in Puerto Vallarta, we always advise to keep your money in your pocket and take the ticket. There are still come cops who will accept a bribe (mordida), though we hear and see this practice less and less as the years go by. It seems to be either the older, weathered policemen who do this, or the young, fresh ones trying to make a buck peso on the side.
Here’s how it goes if you decide to take the ticket and not offer a mordida: In many cases, they will simply let you go, give you a harsh warning, (which you will deserve if you were speeding or breaking any other law involving an automobile or motorbike) rather than go to the bother of writing up a citation. They will explain that you must go to the police station to pay. Back in the day, they would take our driver’s license, meaning there was no choice going forward; we had to pay to get it back.
Some people are misled in thinking the authorities in Puerto Vallarta don’t keep computerized records. That’s not true and don’t ever rely on this type of misleading information because it can get you in a lot of trouble, including with any government department….like Aduana (customs), for example.
You will receive a citation written in Spanish, but it will contain your pertinent information, plus the amount of your fine. These tickets don’t amount to much and if you pay within a certain period of time, usually three days, they will actually half it. This means standing in line, sometimes in the hot sun, but the queue moves fast and in the end, you have not broken the law. The address of the station in Puerto Vallarta will be on the ticket and if you have any questions, ask. It is the police officer’s responsibility to make sure you understand and this is a good time to make sure you have his name and badge number.
If you do offer a mordida to a policeman, keep In mind it is illegal, and depending on the time of day, position of the sun, global news, or the mood of your apprehending officer, you could go to jail for doing so. It’s a huge risk to take and one that could ruin your day and that of any passengers who may have accompanied you on your excursion in and around Puerto Vallarta.

Fun for the Younger Set in Puerto Vallarta: Puerto Vallarta is visited by thousands of people every year; many of these visitors are young and looking for fun and a good time. This great Mexico beach destination has countless activities and places for every mood and budget. It’s not necessary to spend much to have a good time. Here are some great options for some inexpensive fun and good food.
Let’s begin with some restaurants; these will give you a good feel for Mexican cuisine at a very reasonable price.
“El Coleguita” is one of the most popular seafood restaurants in Vallarta. Located in the Marina, with a great ambiance and view overlooking the pier. The portions are very large, enough for 2 people to share.
“Pinocchio’s”, it’s “the place” to enjoy a delicious pizza or pasta. It is located next to the bridge that connects the Malecon to Los Muertos beach, simply tasty.
“Takos Pancho’s” The traditional flavor of Mexican Tacos. Look for them on Basilio Badillo Street almost on the corner of Olas Alas street.
There are a few Japanese restaurants in Vallarta with good cuisine, and a variety of dishes. “Kashi Sushi” has great prices, along with quality food and service. ¨Kashi Sushi¨ is located near the “Stadium”, 3 blocks away from the main road on Olas Altas.
If one of your favorite things when you visit Mexico is the food, there’re two places that you have to visit. We call them “fonditas”, the first one. “El Rinconcito” is open for breakfast and lunch, and has great food. They deliver (if you’re near their location). The second, “Dianita’s” here you’ll surely find nice local people to meet and talk to, it’s the favorite of many. They have a great variety and different menu every day. Typical home made food with a great price. Find them in the Romantic Zone on the corner of Ignacio Vallarta and Francisco Madero.
Now, we have recommendations of bars and clubs so you can hang out, have a drink, and dance.
If you’re in the mood for being on the beach with a chair and a drink in your hand, you have to visit “Lido Beach Club”. You are sure to have a relaxing time, listening music and looking at the ocean from under your umbrella. Located on Los Muertos beach.
“Paradise Burger” on the Malecon is the perfect place to be any evening sitting on the balcony, enjoying a drink and live music.
“Iris Pub” is a good place to hang out with your friends. It’s a kind of alternative/rock place. Start your night having a beer and playing pool while you listen to a live local rock band. Also located on the Malecon.
“La Noche” is a fun alternative, great drinks and good music. Located on Francisco I. Madero street in the Romantic Zone.
“Party Lounge” is always an excellent time. Here you can drink, dance and have a great time. Located across the street from Hidalgo Park, one block from the beginning of the Malecon.
Two other options, of the many you will find on the Malecon of Puerto Vallarta are “The Zoo” and “La Vaquita”. Prices here are a little bit higher, but you are sure to have a fun time.
“CC Slaughter” has DJ mixed music all night. With music and a beer in your hand you’ll be in the mood for dancing. Located on Ignacio L. Vallarta.
In this amazing paradise called Puerto Vallarta there are a lot places to do anything you can imagine. We recommend you do your homework and look up places you might be interested in. It’s always good to do something different than your usual.
If you know cool places where our friends can eat and have fun leave a comment. We would like to know where you have been.

We received a frantic call from a friend here in Puerto Vallarta at dusk the other evening. A bat had flown in the bedroom window of our single female friend and she was terrified. This time of year, bats are in generous supply and as this bat swooped and glided around, doing most of its acrobatics close to the ceiling, our friend stooped and kneeled, doing most of hers near the floor. With an occasional shriek, and demands for instructions on how to deal with the flying mammal, she managed to crawl/scramble to her bodegita for a broom. She reentered the bedroom just as the bat flew out the window into the darkness of night.
We explained she should be thankful; the bat most likely had come in for a little before-dinner snack; she needn’t spray her room with toxic chemicals to get rid of mosquitoes that plague her when she’s trying to sleep.
What should one do if a bat visits? First, it’s very important to know that it’s illegal to kill a bat. They are useful and eat insects, other than mosquitoes, that are harmful to humans. This is one end of the feeding chain and Darwin was right about this.
Turn on all the lights; bats are nocturnal and don’t like brightness. Open all the windows and doors. In the case of our panicky friend, this worked without even trying; the bat exited the same way she came in. The broom is not the dumbest idea but please keep in mind that bats have fragile wing structures. Their bones are very delicate and if you whack it, while trying to shoo it out, you could do severe damage. If you have the courage, use a large bowl or jar, and once the bat has exhausted itself, trap it and cap the lid. Outside, remove the cover and step aside. The bat won’t bite you unless you grab at it and you’re not likely to do that.
We know someone who tried catching a bat with a blanket but that turned out badly; she asphyxiated the poor thing and it wasn’t quite itself when she released it. She let it go only to suffer the fate of the neighborhood cats.
Bats in Puerto Vallarta are harmless. They eat insects and fruit and we’ve never heard of one being caught in anyone’s hair; that’s another silly myth. We have many that live in a huge fig tree outside our casa and we’re honored to have them as helpful neighbors.

Often falsely credited for the colonization of Puerto Vallarta, Mismaloya is a lovely settlement about twelve kilometers from the city. In 1963 the Hollywood director, John Huston, chose it for the location of his movie The Night of the Iguana based on the Tennessee Williams book of the same name. Though Puerto Vallarta was already a well established town and never the small fishing village so claimed in many publications, the greasepaint image bestowed by the invasion of Hollywood has always been hard to shake. There’s no denying that the sizzling affair between Liz Taylor and Richard Burton put Puerto Vallarta on the map in a particular way but their romance didn’t take place in Mismaloya. Indeed sets were built there and lives disrupted but Liz and Dick did their hanging out in town.
The name Mismaloya comes from the Nahuatl language and translates to “place where they grab fish with their hands” and when one watches the boats come in with their daily catch, it’s easy to see how the name was earned.
A small set for the Huston film has crumbled to ruins, and the remains of separate structures that were constructed for other movies (and often mistaken for those of the Iguana sets) are only a shells left behind. The beach, however, is a fabulous destination and a great place to schedule a boat tour for fishing, snorkeling or SCUBA diving. Many dive-masters make their home in Mismaloya. Their well equipped skiffs, called pangas, are easy to board from the beach and usually supplied with dive equipment and fishing gear.
Palapas hug the shoreline, home to many beach cafés, many belonging to families who have owned them for decades and can tell you all about the rambunctious times of when movies were filmed in Mismaloya. Excellent margaritas, made from scratch, ceviche with the freshest ingredients, and delicious nachos are well priced and well portioned.
Vendors at Mismaloya have great bargains for all the same items you would expect at Playa de los Muertos, the beach in town; silver, beads, blankets, carvings, baskets, hammocks, sarongs, etc. Don’t be afraid to bargain but remember this is how they make a living and feed their families. Mismaloya is also a great place to get hair braids, a foot massage or a temporary tattoo.
The view of Los Arcos is unparalleled and is a quick trip on a panga to this natural formation of volcanic rocks sprouting from the ocean. Angelfish and other tropical species are amazing, along with the cliff-life, including the pelicans, terns and the famous blue-footed booby. It’s long been a destination for swimming and diving. Don’t forget your camera.

Once again the third annual Vallarta Real Estate Fair held Saturday March 28th offered many local residents, tourists, buyers and sellers of real estate the information they were looking for.
With a great attendance many visitors to the Fair were thrilled with the information that was available on such topics as available healthcare, insurance, property management and rentals, interior design solutions, title and escrow services, real estate photography, dental care, investment banking in Mexico, accounting and legal services.
With two sessions of conferences participants had the opportunity to ask the professionals about changes in Mexico’s Capital Gains tax laws, Mortgages for the foreign buyer, how to handle Capital Gains tax in the US on the sale of your Mexican vacation home, how to handle rental income in Mexico and the US, and who needs to report foreign bank accounts to the IRS. Also available were professionals to help prepare attendees to successfully rent their vacation homes and explain what pitfalls to look for in property management.
The 2014 Real Estate Market report was also an interesting part of the conferences showing the participants where the Bay of Banderas market was last year and what are the current market trends for 2015. The good news was very well received!
When the local Puerto Vallarta community comes together it is always fun but the opportunity to get important information to help improve your Puerto Vallarta lifestyle and make your real estate investment experience satisfying and enjoyable at the same time is fantastic. Timothy Real Estate Group hopes to see you next year at the 2016 Vallarta Real Estate Fair.
We’ve all heard there are new regulations for traveling with laptops and it seems to have sent a lot of panic to people who depend on their computers for livelihood. We’ve traveled in and out of Puerto Vallarta countless times and have never had a problem. Sometimes we have inadvertently left the tablet or laptop in the knapsack and there have been no questions. On the other hand, going forward, we find it’s best to be on our toes and always follow the rules as best as we can. For the sake of everyone’s safety, we like to see things being done according to rule, giving polite and respectful responses when questioned by authorities. The people working in security are here for our safety, and we need to be reminded what a tedious and sometimes stressful and thankless job they are performing.
We checked with TSA to see what the current ruling is when traveling to and from Puerto Vallarta; we found that the request is for laptops to be removed from the carrier and placed in a separate bin for x-ray screening. If you are lucky enough to be of TSA Pre✓ status, you do not need to remove shoes, laptops, 3-1-1 liquids, belts, or light jackets. This information comes from the TSA site. To get TSA Pre✓ apply directly online at the TSA site. The TSA site at www.tsa.gov has a very thorough list that should answer any questions about what is prohibited from any flight. In case you don’t see an item in question on the list, there is a nifty method to get the information you need. You can take a photo with your smart phone and send a question to AskTSA on Facebook Messenger or Twitter. This service is available weekdays and holidays, during normal business hours. It’s a good thing to check if you have even the remotest thought about something not being permitted. Sometimes when you think you’ve done it all right, you end up being the subject of additional screening if an item triggers any kind of alarm at the checkpoint. This is why we need to get to the airport early.
Within the USA, firearms that are unloaded, in a locked hard-sided container and properly declared through customs are allowed to travel, but don’t ever try to bring one to Puerto Vallarta.

Sometimes we do become bored in Puerto Vallarta, believe it or not. Sipping margaritas on the beach, ziplining through the jungle, diving off the Marietas; at times we seek diversion. It is the age of the hero, with Marvel Comic Book characters on movie screens, beach towels and t-shirts; they give us inspiration.
Volunteering in Puerto Vallarta could actually be a full time occupation. There is no shortage of need. Animal rescue is huge here and it is easy to start a conversation in any bar or venue about the abundance of cats and dogs. There is the Acopio, a city-owned shelter where help is always welcome; walking dogs, bathing, grooming. The cat shelter, Purr Project is also looking for fur-friends to assist with simple veterinary needs and giving attention to their large cast of felines. Both require very little knowledge; just the willingness to pitch in. Neuter and spay clinics are always willing to teach visitors and residents alike about their efforts to keep the population down and invite anyone who wants to join the cause. It’s fascinating and educational. Fostering animals is always appreciated, too. Many are up for adoption or have already been chosen and awaiting flight to their future homes.
Orphanages never run out of things when company come calling. They love donations but make sure you’re bringing only gently used clothing when donating, and check with them first about food wishes. Puerto Vallarta has orphanages associated with churches for the most part and it’s good to have a connection when planning to pay a visit.
Pasito de Luz in Puerto Vallarta is a daycare center for children with special needs. They appreciate anyone who has experience but it’s not necessary. Mexican families drop their children off in the morning at this great facility where they can stay for a short time or several hours. Spanish isn’t necessary; all that’s required is an outpouring of love.
Tutors are a special breed of people and schools welcome those with skills who are able to assist students. Spanish isn’t always a requirement either, since the schools are bi-lingual. Check with the individual institutions and if you’re truly ambitious, post your services on one of the many Puerto Vallarta Facebook sites.
Turtle farms in and around Puerto Vallarta love to share their projects and there are never too many hands during migration time. Check Google for the most recent opportunities and we have found that simply talking to people in shops and bars is a great way to find out about prospects for volunteering and it’s a good way to meet new friends, too!

Dolphins, those happy little creatures who squeal with delight communicating with one another, seem to have a language of their own. We wonder what they would say if they had any idea how much they’ve been in the news lately.
Keeping wild creatures in captivity has never been one of our favorite subjects and leads to much discourse on both sides of the view. However, we have found that most of these discussions boil down to one thing: m o n e y.
Barnum and Bailey recently declared they would no long use elephants as of 2018 in their circus acts, which brought much praise from those who champion the freedom of all living creatures. What B&B failed to reveal in their press releases was the fact these elephants will continue to be chained and subjected to size XL cattle prods. B&B’s elephants are going into cancer research in Florida, where their blood samples will be used in an extensive DNA study. Imagine retrieving blood samples from elephants. This will allow the famed circus to stand on their self proclaimed rights to keep their elephants in the family, get paid for doing so, and thumb noses at the accredited sanctuaries with thousands of acres to roam.
As much protest as there seems to be, the popularity of swimming with dolphins is not decreasing. Those who insist on participating in this activity have not been informed that dolphins, like elephants, suffer from dramatically shortened lives in captivity. Many not only die young, they often don’t survive capture or transport in tank enclosures that are more like cells of torture.
People like to think that dolphins are much like us and enjoy our company. Given that, imagine a human under these same conditions, held in an extremely confined space with absolutely no chance for escape. Dolphins deprived of their freedom suffer from depression, behavioral abnormalities, a range of illnesses and lowered resistance to disease and death. When captured in the open ocean, they are torn from families; their feeding, resting and breastfeeding disrupted. It’s no wonder they don’t adjust well and have been known to attack human swimming partners in substandard environments.
Some tour groups insist they have an alternative, a better way to swim with dolphins, in their own environment. Boats will transport tourists to lagoons and bays. Once again, it would be fascinating to have the dolphins’ point of view on this activity, which also includes profiteering motives. Scientific investigation into this form of entertainment has demonstrated that dolphins aren’t keen to be constantly invaded in their habitats by boatloads of enthusiastic, noisy, often inebriated swimmers. They will leave their homes, seeking calmer areas to avoid being disturbed, only to be followed by humans with the capacity to track them and repeatedly disrupt their routines. Also to be taken into account are pollution and injuries caused by boat propellers.
We have experienced dolphins visiting at sea, even swimming very close to vessels. Dolphins are, after all, playful and friendly in their natural environment. If one is swimming in the ocean and approached by a dolphin, by all means, interact as safely and genuinely as possible.

We’ve recently been involved in conversations about scarcity and abundance of familiar foods during the holidays in Puerto Vallarta. We’ve talked about this before but there are always new and old ideas to share with newbies and also with faithful oldies.
This year, once again, turkeys seem to be the subject of discussion at cocktail hour; who’s having them, where to find them and how to cook them. Once was a time we couldn’t find a turkey in Puerto Vallarta but now they’re in every big box store. You’ll also find imported hams, cheeses and delights such as cranberry sauce. It’s not longer a matter of trying to duplicate what one would have prepared “back home.” Costco even has fresh bags of cranberries so you can still make your own, and ingredients such as walnuts and oranges are not scarce. On the other hand, you could try making other sauces that will delight your gourmands. Why not use papaya, mango, pomegranates, passion fruit, and make a compote that will go well with all meats.
Add some variety to your New Year’s Eve dinner. Consider tamales for your menu. They’re traditional and can be found everywhere. We actually buy ours from street vendors, have done so for a couple decades, and never had a problem. The work that goes into tamales can be left to someone else and leave you more time in the hammock.
Potatoes are always a problem. Those found in Puerto Vallarta are very high in sugar content. When mashed they end up soggy and pasty. The solution is to peel and cut them in half the previous day. Soak them overnight completely covered with water and about half cup of salt. Drain the water the next day, rinse well and cook as usual. You will feel like you are home for the holidays, if you so wish.
Vegetables are abundant here in Puerto Vallarta, fresh and basically organic. They aren’t as pretty as you will find in your fancy supermarkets in the north but they’re tasty and healthy. Carrots have robust flavor and are as pure as to leave orange stains on the cutting board. Brussels sprouts are smaller but bursting with tastiness and go well with local cauliflower and broccoli. Chayote is a Mexican vegetable that can be treated and cooked like squash and is delicious with a bit of butter and desired amount of salt and pepper. Buen provecho!
