  • How do you find out what is happening in Puerto Vallarta?

    What Happens In Puerto Vallarta

It started in Las Vegas. Someone said “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” yet anyone with an ounce of brains knows that’s not necessarily true. People can hardly help keeping their mouths shut when something deliciously repeatable happens. In Puerto Vallarta, this goes back a long way. When John Huston first arrived to scout for his film The Night of the Iguana, based on the racy Tennessee Williams novel, word traveled fast, both in and out of the jungle. Locals lined up for parts as extras, people offered everything from beds and food, to property for the purpose of filming. When the actors began to arrive, it wasn’t long before news got back to Hollywood about the deeds and misdeeds of lovers and losers.

When something happens in Puerto Vallarta, chances of it staying in Puerto Vallarta are slim. Feeds on Facebook get posted all over the world and back around again. Instagram might show an entire story or just teasing trailers. Twitter only allows 280 characters per post but a lot can be said for those who know how to economize words for impact.

That said, how do you find out what is happening in Puerto Vallarta? Once the only source was message boards, online and off, but we were flummoxed as to how to find times for boat cruises, weather reports, how to adopt a dog or cat, hours of restaurants, locations of fresh produce markets, and such important information. Pre-Google, it was tough. Now it’s easy. Google “Puerto Vallarta” and you’re guided to overwhelming amounts of pages, so much so it’s bewildering at times.

What are trusted English language sources? The local newspapers have websites and they keep things relatively current. www.vallartadaily.com provides local and national news, weather updates, economy  and finances and have an events calendar that we feel safe to rely upon. www.banderasnews.com also reports local and national news, has an events calendar, plus gives reliable real estate updates. Opinion editorials are amusing and informative.

Bay Vallarta, found in print and online, is a great resource for local events, entertainment, and openings of new restaurants and businesses. PV Mirror and Vallarta Tribune are found around town in just about every business and also can be sourced online. They have loyal followings and letters to the editors can be entertaining. Gay Vallarta (www.gaypv.com) has a huge amount of information both hard copy and online and isn’t completely reserved for the LGBT crowd.

  • La Playa Puerto Vallarta Style

Puerto Vallarta’s beaches cover a lot of territory, not all within the confines of the city limits. Choose between bringing your own blanket, beverages and food, or getting table service from one of the various restaurants that grace the shoreline. Dine in style, munch nachos, or buy roast shrimp and fresh fruit off the vendors who wander in and out of the crowds. On several beaches, there are divers who will bring you fresh oysters straight from the sea and provide garnishes.

Along Playa Los Muertos, the main beach of Zona Romantica, there’s something for everyone. Loved by tourists and locals alike, the waves are generally calm enough for those lacking in Olympic swimming skills. The south end of the beach hosts beach bars and cafes that cater to the LBGT crowd, but not exclusively, and you are bound to find live music from one end to the other. The pier, the pride of Puerto Vallarta, which was completed and opened in January 2013, is the terminal for smaller boats and water taxis. It’s the perfect place for a romantic stroll at sunset.

From the Los Muertos Pier, day trippers can head south of Puerto Vallarta to beaches at Yelapa, Las Animas and Quimixto. These are highly recommended trips and during the winter season you are almost certain to spot whale, dolphin and manta ray. Some of these venues offer horse trips and day hikes to waterfalls, plus parasailing, kayaking and jet skiing.

Sayulita, north of Puerto Vallarta in the state of Nayarit, is an hour long road trip over the mountain where one will find competitively priced surfing schools and surf boards to rent. Once a well kept secret, it’s grown exponentially and can be very crowded on weekends.

Several small beaches on the road to Punta de Mita, you’re likely to find less boards in the water and fewer bodies lolling in the sand. Coral reefs off shore create great breaks and waves for those interested in putting surfing skills to the test.

Mismaloya is the beach that put Puerto Vallarta on the map, famous for the filming of The Night of the Iguana. Mismaloya was once the destination for campers and RV’ers when the backdrop was nothing but a cliff and jungle. South of the river that runs down from the mountains are a string of palapas, in complete juxtaposition of the hotel to the north on this charming beach. Mismaloya is one of the oldest settlements in the area, rich with history and colorful characters.

Though the actual beach has receded through natural causes over the years and is now lapping the steps of the hotel, the locals have stoically shifted their palapas on to more stable ground. Close to Los Arcos, Mismaloya is a perfect day trip from Puerto Vallarta for beach play, snorkeling, fishing, and hiking.

  • Rosca del Reyes In Puerto Vallarta

For a long time, we thought it quite strange to see Christmas decorations hanging in and around homes far into the New Year. In error, we assumed this was a sign of laziness! One couldn’t get around to putting the baubles away and taking down the lights and tree?

How wrong we were. No matter how long we live in this foreign country, unlike the northern regions we have come from, we are aware there are many things yet to learn.

Christmas is celebrated in Mexico until Epiphany, which is the 6th of January. However, the birth of the Christ child is observed for much longer. Candelaria, also known as Candlemas is a mix of religion and paganism. Over the centuries, certain traditions are picked up, added to the original concept and developed in to a bona fide occasion.

Candelaria takes place on February 2nd. The lucky person, who bit into the plastic baby hidden in the Rosca de Reyes Cake on Epiphany, January 6, is now obliged to feed everyone on what normally we have thought of as Ground Hog Day. This is all in celebration of the Baby Jesus being presented at the temple. This has come to be known, among other things, but chiefly as the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, which also coincides with the forty days following the birth of a child, when women are in need of being churched or purified. This was a common practice in biblical times and being a Virgin not only didn’t get Mary off the hook, it completed the sacred notion of the process. Since the Christ Child was proclaimed The Light of the World, candles became very prominent for the observation of this holiday. It is not unusual to see processions of families to local churches, including Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral. Baskets and armloads of candles are brought to the churches to be blessed for use in the home throughout the coming year. This is also indicative of the halfway mark between the winter solstice and spring equinox, the fact that spring in on her way, bringing more light in the day.

Christmas decorations left in and outside the house are a form of observation, not idleness and besides, they are pretty and make everyone merrier. We see no reason they shouldn’t be given a slight dusting once in awhile and remain all year round. Indeed, quite often they are.

  • Puerto Vallarta: Your Suitcase and You

Coming or Going; Your Suitcase and You

We’ve all suffered that airport moment, coming or going from Puerto Vallarta, anxiously awaiting our luggage to show up on the conveyor belt or tumble down an unforgiving chute.  Finding the suitcase is our first priority; hauling it is second.

Our primary recommendation is WHEELS; whether you’re dragging your junk around in a duffel bag, backpack, or a fancy, sparkly swiveling suitcase. Travel duffels and backpacks now come with wheels. Some designer, after enduring shoulders that felt like Atlas did indeed shrug, came up with this marvelous idea. What took so long?

We bought the hard body suitcase as soon as we saw fellow travelers deplaning in Puerto Vallarta … wheeling, spinning, and practically dancing through terminals and parking lots. We did serious research prior to purchase and discovered that high quality is important. If you opt for a cheap version of the hard body, be duly warned, they are prone to cracking under pressure. Same goes for soft body suitcases; less expensive brands can tear, rip and burst, spilling contents and causing unimaginable delays.

Size matters. A carry-on can be no larger than 45 inches; that’s length plus width and height. Avoid being required to check it by measuring at home. Standard major airlines specifications for checked bags are no larger than 62 inches; same LWH rules apply. If you are the person who insists on packing everything into a carry-on, remember… that baby has to go over heads and into the bin. In other words, if you can’t pick it up and hoist it, you need to rethink; and repack.

Going to some exotic place where the final leg of your journey is on a puddle-jumper (small plane with 20 or less seats), make sure you check ahead with the airline. Bag requirements are different; weight on these planes is crucial.

Our favorite bag is pink, purchased with identification in mind. We don’t care what people think when we’re lugging our belongings through the airport at Puerto Vallarta or anywhere else. We happily have a piece of luggage that  doesn’t look like everyone else’s and it stands out in a crowd!

Interiors are important, too. If you want a swim at the last minute, there are suitcases, packs, etc that have compartments for wet items. And if you want to bring that bottle of tequila to Uncle George, the hard body is for you, with straps to hold things in place.

  • Puerto Vallarta – Spray Your Ankles

This time of year, there is an abundance of conservation regarding mosquitoes in and around Puerto Vallarta. Some of us are just too delicious for our own good. We have a friend who’s tried everything under the sun (and from the pharmacy counter) but the only solution for her is to sit in front of a blasting fan, and the moskies still seem to find her. She realizes that keeping mosquitoes at bay is very important, as their stings can be more than slightly irritating and potentially detrimental to one’s health. Dengue is not something we want to contract, whether on vacation or as a full or part-time resident, no matter how lovely the local hospitals seem.

Some find that routine Vitamin B injections work to repel insects, while others claim that garlic applied to the skin is an assured repellent. Neither have any factual or scientific basis nor does the practice of eating bananas to keep the little biting buggers away. There is actually an argument about whether banana consumption is a deterrent or an attraction! You’re resigned to doing your own research on fruits and herbs, even though it’s not comforting to know one is providing constant blood transfusions to creatures that promise to buzz in one’s ear all night like a mini chainsaw.

Locals are known in the summer months to lather their bodies in an olive oil/garlic/lemon/coconut oil mixture, which the insects simply drown or suffocate.

We recommend Baygon plug-ins and raidolitos, the spiraling incense, both available in supermarkets and drugstores. They are proven repellents and though contain a certain amount of chemicals, are the most effective. After decades of experimenting with natural products, we have capitulated to using most costly yet effective solutions.

It’s highly recommended that visitors spray ankles when venturing to the beach for sunset vistas. It’s a particularly opportunistic time for feasting in the bloodsucking realm. There are many brands and varieties with and without DEET and once again, we are inclined to use the strongest repellant offered and recommend whatever the locals buy over the counter, Autan in the lotion application being our favorite.

We’re luckier here in Puerto Vallarta than neighbors further up the coast. In San Blas, for example, the jejéne is quite famous. Also referred to as a no-see-um, they do exist in Puerto Vallarta but not in the abundance as northern regions. There is a prevailing legend regarding the torture of captured prisoners. In an effort to obtain a confession, suspects were stripped naked and staked on the beach at sunset. It wasn’t long before the begging for mercy began and desired confession was achieved.

  • Puerto Vallarta: Sports, Pro or Amateur?

    Calling Pros and Amateurs!

Puerto Vallarta has long had a history of sports, with enthusiasts for baseball, soccer, tennis, and other activities dating back several decades. These traditions are honored when Puerto Vallarta hosts events, which also contribute to tourism and the image of our spectacular city.

There are few things as exciting for running aficionados as a Marathon, and Puerto Vallarta holds hers every year in April, this year on the 15th, which is double exciting since it will overlap with the anniversary of the foundation of Puerto Vallarta, 100 years in development, getting stronger and more beautiful with every decade. We look forward to cheering on participants, who will win cash prizes of $10,000, $6,000 and $5,000 pesos for first, second and third place winners, respectively.  There’s a half-marathon, as well with a start time for both at 6:30 a.m. in the port terminal. If you’re eager to participate, make sure to register by March 31 for $500 pesos; after that it goes up to $600 until close on April 13. The distribution of numbers and chips will be at the Marathon 2018 Expo Site on April 14, the day before the marathon, beginning at 9 a.m. Further information can be found at www.marathonpuertovallarta.com.

The ATP Challenger Tour Puerto Vallarta Open will be held from April 30 – May 5th at Parota Park. This is a pro tennis event and really worth your viewing time. If you love the game, you will enjoy this competition of players from around the globe. The park has recently been renovated and there’s a lot of excitement about this tour! Tennis has put Puerto Vallarta on the map over the years and this is a global tournament that commenced on the French Island of New Caledonia, on New Year’s Day, 2018. It continues throughout the year to Australia, Thailand, German, France, USA, Italy, Japan and several other countries with a list of very impressive athletes.  The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) calendar for this secondary professional circuit can be followed on sports channels and will be thrilling to witness here on our home turf. The ATP Challenger Tour Puerto Vallarta Open will be played on hard courts and it’s an honor to host this grand sports event, with prize money from $50,000 – $150,000 (USD). Be sure to pack your sunglasses, hats and sun block, along with your patience, all appropriate items for outdoor tournaments.

  • Vallarta And the Flucuating Pesos

    Counting Pesos

Recently we were informed of a disgruntled tourist in Puerto Vallarta who was very unhappy regarding being shortchanged at a convenience store. Seems the wife sent the husband for avocadoes, beer and water with a $500 peso note and he came back with $50. Some things just don’t add up and this was one of those times. Apparently he did something North Americans are accustomed to, considering he was being helpful to the cashier. He gave her an extra two pesos to round up the amount, supposedly making it easier for her to count back. Problem is… this is not an exercise that’s been adapted for the peso.

Until the Oil Crisis in the late 70’s, the peso was one of the most secure currencies in all of Latin America. Capital flight destabilized the peso for many years to come when Mexico defaulted on its external debt in 1982. President Carlos Salinas adopted a strategy called the “Stability and Economic Growth Pact” and on January 1, 1993, a new currency was introduced. The new peso Nuevo Peso in noted on each bill with MXN, whereas the old peso, which became immediately obsolete, was MXP.

One new peso was equal to 1000 of the old peso and it took Mexicans awhile to make that adjustment. Tourists remained baffled for a much longer period of time; in fact, many people still have a difficult time making sense of the exchange rate.

Perhaps due to devaluation and constant fluctuations, cashiers have never bothered to learn how to count money back and therefore, visitors are less inclined to expect it.

However, we have a word of advice. When you hand over your money, regardless of the denomination or amount of change you offer, consider where you are standing. At the COUNTER, right? As defined in the dictionary it is a long flat-topped fixture in a store or bank across which business is conducted with customers. Do your counting there, before you walk away.

Mistakes can be made anywhere and instead of abruptly assuming dishonesty, we believe a much better approach is to make a constant habit of counting one’s change before one leaves the counter. An understanding of the exchange is also very useful. Before you go on your holiday to any foreign country, study the local currency and do your best to know how it compares to your own, so that you aren’t creating constant quandaries whenever you need to make a purchase. Don’t change your money in the airport or your home bank. Wait until you are

in Puerto Vallarta or your chosen destination; we recommend using the ATM machines, as you are assured of getting the most recent daily rate. ATM’s at banks are the safest.

  • Vallarta: Social Ecology Works

    Banning Straws in Puerto Vallarta

If you need proof that social media works, consider the banning of straws in many restaurants in Puerto Vallarta. Some have moved to alternatives, such as paper/wax straws, which are biodegradable, and less damaging to the environment and animals. There are establishments who will only give customers these types of straws if they are asked; not freely offering them. Others are using clever substitutes. We have seen bamboo tubes used, for example.

We recently read an article quoting Dune Ives, the Executive Director of Lonely Whale, a nonprofit whose goal is guarding our oceans from harm and protecting marine life. Ives states that straws are a “gateway plastic,” meaning they lead the way for people to realize how easy it is to give up all types of plastic. It’s not hard to let go of our love for straws; considering the destruction to our environment, especially all waterways, it should be easy.

The Save the Sea Turtle Foundation started out in 1987 as a national project and has hit its stride as a global group, creating awareness not just for sea turtles. They are dedicated disseminating educational information about our marine ecosystems and how we slowly destroying our ocean environments. Continual publication of graphic photos on the internet and social media showing the damage and death to turtles, birds, fish and all types of sea life has brought attention to the cause of the destruction.

People around the world are acting. Straws are a symbol. There is so much garbage floating around the planet, it’s impossible to describe in a short venue such as ours. We do know that a walk in the beach in Puerto Vallarta picking up garbage and debris is an eye-opening experience.

In Puerto Vallarta, it began with one small restaurant. They let their customers know they would no longer provide drinking straws. It quickly caught on to the degree there are now businesses attached to the movement. Check out #sinpopote, which means without straw in Spanish. You can buy stainless steel straws, include a cleaner and case.  We personally have a glass straw, a gift from a stateside friend; it is sturdy, non-breakable and comes with a money back guarantee. Hummingbird Glass Straws is another company, easily found on a Google search; they have straws with cute little animals, characters and decorations. Keep an eye out in the stores around Puerto Vallarta or order on Amazon.

New York City is considering a ban on straws. In Puerto Vallarta, we are ahead of the game. With locals, residents, and tourists joining together, we can make a difference. Next up: Plastic bags.
