  • 911 Comes to Puerto Vallarta

    911 Comes to Puerto Vallarta

For many years we were taught to dial 066 in Puerto Vallarta for an emergency and though, thankfully, we haven’t put it to much use, we will soon be able to revert to the ubiquitous 911 that is being adopted, slowly but surely, for more global usage. Getting the world to cooperate and everybody to get on board for uniform numbers is a monumental undertaking. Though places like Tonga, Argentina, and St Vincent and the Grenadines have been using 911 for ages, other countries such as Chile, insist on using three spate numbers for fire, police and ambulance, which is amazingly confusing for newcomers, especially in cases of dire emergencies. Imagine calling the fire department and being told to hang up and dial the correct number.

Starting in January 2017, dialing 911 in Puerto Vallarta will get you all three of the above. The National Emergency Number Association (NENA) believes that unification standardizes structural and operation changes, and the project has been incredibly complicated in its enormity. The development of the C4 System (Communication, Control, Command, Computer) has created a State Coordinator for all emergency attention. Currently these centers are serving over 112 million people with more than 300 comprehensive emergency centers throughout the country, with improvements being established rapidly.

The budget for this new system come from Federal, State and Municipal sources but each state is responsible for creating and facilitating their own schemes and instruments for responding to emergency calls. Puerto Vallarta will depend on the cooperation of the government of Jalisco, coordinated with Nayarit and the immense hotel complexes in Nuevo Vallarta.

Once the call routing phase is in place by January 3, 2017, the next phase will be the locations of fixed numbers beginning March 1, 2017, followed by the geolocation of mobile numbers on June 1. Many states will be able to use 911 to call for emergency as early as October 2016. Due to over 200,000 numbers in Mexico beginning with 911, those changes will need to be made first and foremost to avoid routing problems. It’s a great idea whose time has come. Many people have 911 programmed into their mobile phones, which will soon be applicable in Puerto Vallarta.

  • Puerto Vallarta: Hands On The Wheel

    Hands on the Wheel

We have learned it’s best to keep hands on the wheel while driving in Puerto Vallarta and eyes on the road. While cruising along recently with our visiting granddaughter in the back seat, we stopped at a light and pulled out the cell phone. Our intention was to let friends know we were almost to their apartment complex so they could come and meet us at the gate to let us in for an afternoon swim. The light turned green and we tooted on along, phone to our ear, waiting for someone to pick up on the other end. In the meantime, an ominous blurping sound interrupted our forward motion and we were forced to pull over and have a conversation with an office of traffic law, who had signaled us from his scooter.

There was no argument. I knew I had been caught phone-handed. I was issued to ticket that he said would be halved if I paid it quickly. At the police station. On the outskirts of Puerto Vallarta. This is painful, because one would much rather be entertaining the grandchildren at the beach. The ticket was $75 pesos so the final cost was $37.50 pesos, a pittance. However… we had to travel, altering our schedule with visiting family in town and go to Las Juntas to stand in a line in the hot sun to pay a silly ticket. It’s not the amount; it’s the inconvenience. This is about to change in the State of Jalisco.

Pending final approval, this new regulation is expected to be take place soon, considering that at least 55 citizens a day are involved in accidents as the result of cell phones. This includes drivers of all types of vehicles, their victims and pedestrians who are distracted while texting and phoning while walking.

The fine for driving in Puerto Vallarta, while being distracted by one’s cell phone is about to leap from a paltry $75 pesos to perhaps somewhere in the vicinity of ten times that much. It won’t simply cause irritation, it will pain the pocketbook, which is exactly what authorities intend. An impact needs to be made on errant drivers.

Puerto Vallarta won’t be caught off guard. This initiative will be accompanied by a PR campaign to inform drivers in Puerto Vallarta and the wider areas of Jalisco to be alert and put the phone away. We can’t argue with the sensibility of this motion.

  • Puerto Vallarta: Happy New Year!

    İProspero Año!

We love New Year’s Eve in Puerto Vallarta. Everyone gets in on the act and the fun goes on all night long, with dancing in the streets and endless fireworks. There are so many great venues where you can hang out to say goodbye to the old year and greet the new. The beach at Los Muertos has always held a special draw for us, whether we go fancy, all dressed up, or jeans and t-shirts with tacos on the street for dinner. We’ve gone both routes, and from year to year, it can be a difficult decision, because both are a lot of fun. Many of the local restaurants on the beach have fixed menus and reservations are highly recommended. They plan accordingly and it’s a time of year for everyone to show off, too. Wherever you dine, you will most likely be served 12 grapes after your dinner, at midnight. You can munch on them while you watch the incredible fireworks display the entire length of the Bay of Banderas. Eat each grape, make a wish for the coming year, twelve months in all, and if you’re close enough to the church, gobble them down with the striking of the midnight bells. If you’re looking for love, don’t forget to wear your red underwear for good luck!

After the fireworks have ended, we love to walk down the Malecón with crowds who linger into the early morning hours. It will have cooled down considerably, sometimes getting as low as 60° F/15° C, so be prepared with a light jacket or wrap.

If the beach doesn’t interest you, there are fine dining establishments where reservations also are necessary, not along the beachfront, but those tucked in the back streets, away from much of the hubbub and noise. Entertainment is often the enticement for these venues and performances will be memorable.

An option we have participated in the past is the bonfires at the beach at Playa del Holi, which is adjacent to Peninsula, across the river, down a long dusty road. Locals set up canopies over tables, which are covered with elegant lacy cloths. Fine china and crystal are carried into the site during the daylight hours; candles and lanterns are lit after dark, and a New Year’s Eve feast ensues, usually around midnight. Barbeques dot the area with low flames and delicious odors, music from portable devices mix with laughter and singing. Iceboxes full of beverages arrive full and depart empty.

The spirit of camaraderie that exists in Puerto Vallarta begins at the unfolding of each New Year with ringing bells, raised glasses and voices, dancing and singing, and a pyrotechnical show that few can rival. Enjoy, don’t drink and drive, and tip generously.

  • Taking Pictures in Puerto Vallarta

We never tire of gazing at the large photos in the hallways of the restaurant La Palapa, on Los Muertos Beach. We recommend paying a visit; they’re in the back, past the cashier, by the restrooms. Other businesses in town have similar displays but none quite compares to these.

Though they don’t depict the entire pictorial history of Puerto Vallarta, these photos show a lot of what progress does and doesn’t represent.

The earliest photos in existence of the town are probably from about 1922. A small studio existed for a short time and portraits were the main focus of the first photographer in Puerto Vallarta, though he did produce some landscape photos as well. The first notable photographer, Rodolfo Pulido, arrived in 1930 and his business continued for several years under the auspices of his wife and daughter, who became his faithful assistants. Señor Pulido had no competition for a couple decades until Oscar Rosales Rodriguez arrived from Guadalajara with state-of-the-art equipment and began producing postcards of the area. Rosales Rodriguez carried on his business for many years and was a very well respected member of the community, attending social events and school functions with his camera. He was known for originality and getting clever shots, climbing high up in the hills to capture the panoramic views; roaming beaches to catch local action; and shooting from offshore to get land vistas from north to south.

When we first visited Puerto Vallarta, finding a place to develop instant prints was a challenge. There was no such thing as one-hour; we waited until at least the next day. We were pleased to watch competition spring up along Libertad and soon Farmacia Guadalajara got into the act and installed a fully equipped onsite lab, where we dropped rolls of film off mornings and came back to retrieve developed photos in the afternoon. This was a source of some amusement to neighborhood boys (and a few girls) who watched the machine located next to the window as it churned out interesting prints that unsuspecting honeymooners and the like could not have realized would be on such public view.

Times have changed to the point where it is rare to see anyone with a real camera dangling from their neck. Photos these days are produced on telephones and sent immediately into the universe, back home and elsewhere. If you do come across a photo session, it is more than likely a professional, such as Josef Kandoll, taking the place of Señors Pulido and Rosales Rodriguez. Though times have changed we must still fulfill the need for memories and souvenirs.

  • House Hunters Intl: Second Vallarta Charity Event!

Timothy Real Estate Group filmed their first episode for the wildly popular and highly addictive HGTV real estate show House Hunters International back in 2012. Fast-forward to 2014, the real estate powerhouse filmed three more episodes, hosted the charity event of 2012 at Daiquiri Dick’s, founded the Vallarta Real Estate Fair, launched a dynamic mobile friendly website and is working on their second House Hunters International screening and fundraiser event.

We sat down with Taniel Chemsian, the real estate agent in all four episodes, for a one-on-one Q & A:

What has been the most rewarding experience with filming House Hunters International?

Having the opportunity to promote Puerto Vallarta and showcasing all the wonderful places, people and family businesses throughout the city.

What was the biggest surprise while filming?

That it’s a lot of work. Putting a solid episode together is not as easy as it looks. It takes preparation, teamwork and commitment from all those involved.

What have been some of the challenges with filming in Puerto Vallarta?

    DSC_1205

One of the biggest challenges is the unpredictable weather during the summer months. The rain clouds tend to come in during the afternoon and we sometimes catch ourselves racing against time (and the thunderstorms) in getting a scene wrapped up before the downpour. Nobody wants to have their mascara running down their face on camera…unless you are Tammy Faye Baker.

Have you been contacted by many people that have seen the show?

The show has definitely made an impact on our presence in the market place. It has allowed Timothy Real Estate Group to reach a wider audience that otherwise would of cost millions of dollars and years to accomplish. We are grateful and appreciative of the wonderful opportunity we’ve been given.

How did you become involved with House Hunters International?

At first, they thought I was the lost Kardashian, but when I showed them my bank statement, they realized they made a mistake. Actually, the producers contacted us and I auditioned for the show…and the rest is history.

Do you have any more episodes planned in the near future for the show?

We just filmed our fourth episode this March and are scheduled to film our fifth later this summer.

What has been the biggest surprise in filming for the buyers?

All the buyers have been fantastic from the get go. They get to see what it’s really like putting a TV show together. By the end of the first day, they realize “this is a lot of work”, but the production company makes it fun and is very accommodating.

Have the buyers enjoyed the process?

I think so. The show is really about the buyers. We take into consideration why they love Puerto Vallarta, where they like to hang out, what activities they enjoy doing and why PV holds a special place in their hearts. They’re the real stars; we’re just their pretty accessories. 😉

When is your next House Hunters charity event?

    IMG 9485 ABR28mayt

    IMG 9577 ABR28mayt

Our second House Hunters International screening and charity fundraiser event will take place on Monday, November 24th, at the Mantamar Beach Club on Los Muertos Beach. The theme is going to be “Gilligan’s Island”.

How can people find out more about the event and get tickets?

We started a Facebook event page (click HERE) for the event. People can also contact me direct at taniel@timothyrealestategroup.com. We are hoping to surpass our first event in raising much-needed funds for our local charities.

  • 365 Fun Things To Do In Puerto Vallarta #5 Go to Yelapa

    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta
    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta

Yelapa is a small fishing town located on the southernmost cove of the Bay of Banderas.  It is only accessible by boat and you can take a boat-taxi from Los Muertos Beach, Mismaloya or Boca de Tomatlan.  There are also day cruise excursions that include Yelapa in their tours.  From Los Muertos Beach, it is a 45 minute boat ride. It is a small community of less than 1,000 people and a handful of foreign residents.   It attracts artists and bohemian-types who enjoy the amazing scenery and the lack of modern conveniences.   There are roads (more like paths) throughout the village but they are for foot or horse or burro (some bicycles) – no cars.

    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta
    Yelapa Puerto Vallarta

Of course now there is electricity in Yelapa and cell phones work everywhere in the world, so you are never fully away from civilization anymore.  But this is as about as close as you can get in Puerto Vallarta. There are a few small inns and rental properties in Yelapa so many tourists stay there for their entire vacation; however, for most it is a fun day trip.   It is quite rustic and most of the buildings are open air with palapa roofs. Most of the activities revolve around the beach; however, you can hike in the mountains to a natural waterfall that feeds into a brook where you can swim in the clean, cool water.  You can also take a horseback ride around the area.

    Waterfall Yelapa
    Waterfall Yelapa

Of course there is ample access to the freshest fish and seafood so you will love eating a big lunch while you are enjoying a perfect sunny day on the beach in Yelapa.  And what to drink?   This is the place where you can find Raicilla which comes from the stills in the mountains that surround the town.   Also called “Mexican Moonshine”, raicilla is distilled from the agave plant which is also used to make tequila.  It is considered to be mildly hallucinogenic so it must be imbibed slowly – which is easy to do as the flavor is very different.    And of course, dessert is always a slice of pie from the famous Pie Ladies of Yelapa (coconut is the best!!).

I have been going to Yelapa for 25 years.  It has hardly changed at all.  It has a communal land ownership system (ejidal) so it is unlikely that any large commercial development will happen any time soon.  It is a wonderful day trip and a great way to enjoy the immense beauty of this area.

  • Puerto Vallarta: Thursday Marina Market

    Thursday Marina Market

We love to take a Thursday trip out to the Marina in high season. The Marina Market was once a small shopping experience that we enjoyed before dinner at one of the fine marina restaurants. We would buy some vegetables and sometimes pick up bread or sweets from one of the bakers. This market has grown significantly and we now find we must arrive much earlier than we once did, if we want to partake in all the fabulous booths and peruse the many vendors. The Marina Malecón has been a favorite stroll of ours for the past two decades and a drink up in El Faro is often a highlight. There is much to see from up in the lighthouse and it is a great place for watching the changes in the north part of Puerto Vallarta. The Thursday Market opens at 6 pm and merchants stay open until 10 pm or until they have sold all their products, which frequently happen with the food booths.

What’s truly delightful about this market is that every item is made locally. Not only is nothing imported, every item is handmade, and you will most likely have a chance to meet the person or people who crafted your purchases. We have adorned our home and body with such items as remarkable jewelry, lovely handbags and fine clothing; gorgeous baskets and paintings; wonderful holiday decorations and amusing Day of the Dead pieces. The marvelous Huichol art is here, too, of course and they do such a great job of wrapping purchases for travel.

Fruits and vegetables are organic and a variety of bread can be found, including several grains and gluten free. We often buy dinner at the market these days, and take it home to cook or reheat. These are excellent chefs who sell everything from fine meats and cheeses, to fancy liqueurs, pizza, cookies and cakes. With nearly 200 stalls, there isn’t time to take it all in.

We have been fascinated to find local hand rolled cigars that rival the most expensive found in town and at a very fair price. Ice cream, yummy cups of corn, and the typical Mexican nieves de garrafa (snow cones) are also available.

The atmosphere at the Thursday Marina Market is very festive with live music, strolling Mariachi and visiting musicians. We love the family ambiance with a mixture of locals, ex-pats and tourists.

  • Peregrinaciones In December

The Peregrinaciones or Processions are celebrated during the first 12 days of December.

Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ was given the name “La Virgen de Guadalupe”, or The Virgen of Guadalupe” in Mexico by church authorities almost 500 years ago.

In Puerto Vallarta, the Peregrinaciones  start primarily at Calle 31 de Octubre and lead down Calle Juarez to the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, located across from city hall.

    Peregrinaciones In December
    Peregrinaciones In December

To many people of Mexico, ‘La Virgen” is a sign of faith and hope and on December 12th, HER day, “Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe”, thousands of people walk in procession to the church to search for help or thank her for prayers answered.

Throughout the twelve days of Christmas processions of many hotels, restaurants and other companies have their employees and their families dress up in traditional Mexican garb and walk to the church, singing Christmas carols, while holding candles, baskets of fruit and vegetables and other items to offer to La Virgen.

There are Mariachi groups also who make the procession, playing their wonderful instruments and singing along the way.

Nightly throughout the 12 days of Peregrinaciones and all day on December 12th, there are many “puestos” or stands, selling tamales, sodas, tacos, fruit, churros, ejote, pozole and  t-shirts of La Virgen and all things Christmas for you to enjoy.

If you are in Puerto Vallarta during this time, it is one of the best experiences to be had, especially on December 12th.

    Feliz Navidad!

  • Linda’s Puerto Vallarta Shopping Tips

    Puerto Vallarta’s Wonderful Markets

One of the most important things to good cooking is finding fresh, locally grown ingredients.  The experience of wandering through Mexico’s markets can be a beautiful experience not only experiencing the flavors of the culture but the flavors of the food.   Two of my favorite mercados in the downtown area of Puerto Vallarta is “El Mercado de Col. Emiliano Zapata”, located on the east end of Calle Lazaro Cardenas and the other is “El Mercado de Col. 5 de Diciembre”, located on Calle Brasila, near the Panteon (cemetery).
The mercado on calle Lazaro Cardenas opens very early, at 3am, because it is a main supplier to the local restaurants in Vallarta.  The seasonal fruits and vegetables are wonderful, as are the fresh herbs and even fresh juices, squeezed on the spot. Farm fresh eggs (do not put the eggs in the refrigerator!), and dried chiles and beans are also available.  There are also several fresh cheese “locales” within a block that have fresh panela and queso fresco amongst others. The mercado is open 7 days a week.

My favorite place to buy fresh fish and shellfish is the mercado on calle Brasilia.  This mercado is also open very early, with the freshest fish available that was caught early the same morning.  In many instances you can bargain a little price wise, especially if you purchase in large quantities.  Everyone is friendly and eager to assist you.  Be careful when you wear sandals because the cement it is wet and constantly being cleaned.   There is also a tortilleria on the south corner of this mercado for your convenience.  This mercado is open 7 days a week as well. Please do not hesitate to support these local markets.  It is fun, and also you are helping the local economy.
