  • Tonala Is Worth Visiting From Puerto Vallarta

Before the conquistadores invaded Tonalá in 1530, this city was ruled by a woman, Cihualpilli. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, located at the high point of Cerro de la Reina (Queen’s Hill), where Cihualpilli lived, ruling over her people, has a monument built in her honor. A flagpole also can be found in this location, waving one of the highest banners in all of Mexico. The name Tonalá comes from the indigenous Nahuatl Tonallán, which means “this is where the sun rises.”

We highly recommend a visit to Tonalá if you are visiting Puerto Vallarta. Tonalá is a municipality of Jalisco, bordered by Juanacatlán, Tlaquepaque, Zapotlanejo, El Salto and Guadalajara. Tonalá has a huge tianguis (flea market), which includes every possibility of purchase from pottery to antique furniture. The tianguis is open only on Thursdays and Sundays, with as many as 4000 craftsmen and vendors to choose from, especially during the Christmas holidays when tourism is high. Aptly named for her sunrises, this is when the heart of the city comes to life in the early morning hours, with tables set up and spread with millions of handcrafted items. Incredible ironwork is available, either off the shelf or made to order. Simple or ornate, it can be created and delivered to Puerto Vallarta for a very reasonable price. In darkened doorways, glassblowers form goblets, bowls, chandeliers and tiny dollhouse items. Paper flowers materialize from ingenious hands; all colors, shapes and sizes. Objects made from tin and brass, and the famous Mexican cartoneria (colorfully painted dolls, animals, clowns and toys) is everywhere. The selection of woodworking and furniture is overwhelming and must be given a complete day to itself for proper selection. Since pre Hispanic times, Tonalá has been widely known as a popular ceramics center and even boasts its very own design, the Flor de Tonalá (Tonalá flower), which can be found on bowls, vases, platters and many other ceramic pieces.

Tonalá is not just for shopping. Before heading back to Puerto Vallarta, one should see the exhibition hall and the museum at the Puebla-Museo. An astonishing collection of antique ceramics and contemporary designs is not to be missed, as well as the compellation of miniatures. Another essential stop is the Capilla de la Cruz (Chapel of the White Cross) where the first mass was presented by Franciscan monks; and the Santiago Apostal Parish, built in 1830 and one of the oldest standing churches in the country.

Tonalá has some very nice small hotels but they fill up fast during tourist season. We usually stay close by in Tlaquepaque, where the night streets are quiet and there is an abundance of places to stay. Guadalajara is where we reside when we plan to do a bit more partying and stay out late. It’s the Tonalá sunrise that we don’t want to miss.

  • Puerto Vallarta: Can I Work From Home?

    Work from Anywhere

You know that photo you see of the person working on the beach, tapping away at his laptop? It’s not a dream. It’s something anyone can do. If you want to move to Puerto Vallarta but you’re stumped about how you’ll make money in the process, there are loads of options. Writers are aware of this; it’s all about deadlines and research, but that’s not for everyone. If you are so inclined, however, there are sites like freelancer.com, which can lead you in the direction of copywriting and if you have SEO skills you will be in higher demand.

If you’re a programmer, you can work just about anywhere and depending on your skill level, there is certainly money to be made. Puerto Vallarta needs people like this, as does any growing city, but this is something you can work at from anywhere in the world, with clients all over the globe. You can also check out Virtual Assistance; though it’s a broad and somewhat diverse subject, we know people who are doing data entry, answering Skype-phone calls and updating websites, and they take their work wherever they go. Translators are always in demand. We’re not talking specifically about Spanish. You can be a translator in any language with your online skills.

Social Marketing is not going away and you can make money with the time you spend in front of sites like Facebook. Find someone to take over their fan pages; Twitter, Instagram and other sites that use social media to get their ideas and brands across. You can live in Puerto Vallarta and be employed by someone in New York, London, Toronto, Milan, Hong Kong, anywhere. It’s a job that doesn’t require a whole lot of tech knowledge and it doesn’t matter where you work from. With the use of templates, the canvass is really quite unlimited. We recommend investing in a short coding course before you come to settle in Puerto Vallarta and you’ll be set for life. We found that learning the basics of web design was a lot easier than we thought.

What’s your area of expertise? You can be a consultant and live in Puerto Vallarta, which the computer age has made very easy. Architecture, law, human resources, art, educational skills, stocks, trading; whatever your skill set. You may already be a consultant and only need to hone your online skills. There’s no reason you can’t work on your tan, while advising clients. The possibilities are endless.

Online teaching is a growing industry. ESL is something you can teach from your home base in Puerto Vallarta. It’s not necessary to be a linguist; online classes will teach you all you need to know. We have a friend in Guadalajara who has been teaching virtually for many years and Puerto Vallarta is her favorite weekend getaway.

  • Vallarta Inspired Living News: Nuevo Vallarta

    Nuevo Vallarta

Oftentimes we have disappointed tourists who thought they were coming to Puerto Vallarta but found themselves in Nuevo Vallarta instead. This happens because most travel agents haven’t been here themselves to know the difference. Vallarta equals Vallarta on paper and they seem pretty darn close on a map. Nuevo Vallarta, using the name, which lures the unaware, is in the state of Nayarit, to the north of Puerto Vallarta. They aren’t even in the same time zone as Puerto Vallarta. It’s an hour ahead of us and cause for lots of confusion, especially regarding flight times.

However, there is a lot to do and see in Nuevo Vallarta and we recommend anyone who hasn’t visited yet to get busy and make a plan. With a first class infrastructure throughout the area, Nuevo Vallarta has the second highest number of hotels and resorts in the country, so you’re bound to find something to suit you. Golden sand beaches stretch for miles and Nuevo Vallarta not only can boast a 2019 Earth Check Silver Certification, they also have been awarded Five Diamond distinction by the AAA (American Automobile Association).

Accessible by boat, two of Mexico’s premier marinas are located in Nuevo Vallarta. As well as the Nuevo Vallarta Marina, the Paradise Village Marina has been certified as Mexico’s cleanest marina. The landscape along Paradise Village Marina is the essence of luxury with care taken to preserve the natural flora and dwellings, straight out of Architectural Digest. The marina is capable of docking up to 500 vessels of various lengths, and accommodates sailors with drinking water, pump outs, excellent security and a 24 hour concierge service.

For nature lovers, there is the Sierra de Vallejo State Biosphere Reserve, covering nearly 885 square miles. Within the reserve there are three lakes and more than a dozen canals that one can take nature tours through, with the chance of spotting wild boars, jaguars and colorful, chattering parrots. This is where you’ll find the National Marshes, where twenty percent of Mexico’s mangroves are located.

For golfers, there are two state-of-the-art courses, both vast and beautiful. Jack Nicklaus Vidanta, which is a nine-hole; and El Tigre, with eighteen holes designed by the famous Texan, Robert von Hagge, said to be one of the most challenging courses in the world.

The Grand Velas Hotel in Nuevo Vallarta has received international attention for the restaurant Piaf, which has been named a Michelin Restaurant. If you want a dazzling gourmet experience, we recommend making reservations. There are several restaurants in Nuevo Vallarta that partake in the International Gourmet Festival, serving dishes with global influence. During the festival would be an excellent time to take in the sights of the region.

Nuevo Vallarta is a quick trip from the airport, Puerto Vallarta, Bucerias, and Punta de Mita, and there is something for everyone.

  • Walkable Puerto Vallarta

    Walking the Malecón

You can entertain yourself for days on end walking the Malecón. There’s so much to do, we have made a short list but you’ll discover many things on your own. And it’s all free!

There are two points to start from, depending on your fortitude when you walk along the Malecón. The first is The Sheraton Hotel, where you will pass the stadium to the east. Besides sporting events, there are other exciting happenings at the stadium. Lila Downs, among others, have given free concerts at the stadium. This is also where the International Fireworks Competition is held when it visits Puerto Vallarta. Just south of the Sheraton on the ocean side, you may catch sight of a volleyball tournament or other international outdoor event; this space has been utilized for many attractions since it was stripped bare by the Hurricane Kena in October 2002.

Along your way, you’ll find great places to stop of a cold beer, tacos, and other refreshments at establishments such as Mangos Beach Club or El Barracuda, where you can find a spot in the shade indoors or relax on the beach.

Hotel Rosita is considered the northern point of the bona fide Malecón. Join in on walking tours viewing Malecón sculptures on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 (don’t be late; the guide will start without you) from November to April. Meet in front of the Millennium sculpture next to Hotel Rosita. It’s also free but you can make a contribution to the Los Mangos Public Library. The walk take about two hours, with approximately fifteen sculptures to see, great information and a wee bit of gossip, sponsored by Gary Thompson, the owner of Galleria Pacifico.

If you’re on the Malecón in the evening, you are sure to observe all sorts of entertainment. Make good use of the tip jars. Cultural and civic shows at Los Arcos arena (the Arches) seat about three hundred people (bring a pillow; it’s hard concrete) and usually start in the early evening.

The main plaza and Our lady of Guadalupe church is a main attraction, the site of colossal Christmas celebrations for the entire month of December; weddings, baptisms, funerals, and regular services.

Cross the bridge to south of town and you’ll find live theater, restaurants, boutiques, jewelry stores, pubs, pizza parlors, and a growing ex-pat community. The malecón ends with a lovely walk directly on the beach, as you pass some of the finest and oldest dining establishments in Puerto Vallarta. Vendors are here in the daytime and the beach is a lively place with the pier docking departures and arrivals of small boats and fishing excursions, as well as water taxis to the southern coastline.

  • Puerto Vallarta: Camarones

    Eat Your Shrimp!

We eat a lot of shrimp in Puerto Vallarta. Mexican shrimp certainly deserves its high rating as far as global recognition is concerned. Shrimp is a perfect source for so many nutrients and most people are completely unaware how good of a food it really is. The highest quality protein polyunsaturated fats, and vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, B6, B12, and pantothenic acid) are found in shrimp. It is also very rich in minerals such as calcium, zinc, copper, flourine and phosphorus.)

The shrimp you eat in Puerto Vallarta is from the west coast of Mexico and is the largest specie regulated by the Mexican government when it comes to their terms of fisheries management. In other words, the major companies who bring in the shrimp you order at your favorite restaurants in Puerto Vallarta, such as Promarmex, are rooted in sustainability and committed to preserving the natural resources of the oceans. These companies don’t just comply with the rules and regulations mandated by the Mexican government (Conapesca), they also follow the NOAA guidelines, which is the USA agency that enriches life through science. Their milieu covers everything from the surface of the sun to the very depths of the oceans. These organizations continue to work hand in hand.

When we bite into this crisp, tasty crustacean, we aren’t likely to think about their abundance in the sea and how they are harvested. In many countries around the world, little thought is given to the shared environment and that shrimp have many natural predators; fish, whales, dolphins, starfish, seabirds, sharks and humans. In Mexico, due to the compliance of the laws by many of the fleet, we are assured of a continued profusion of these delightful edibles. Most boats in the Mexican waters are equipped with turtle excluders, reduction devices and other equipment meant to protect sealife.

Served hot or cold, in omelettes, salads, cocktails and for breakfast lunch or dinner, you will be able to find endless choices of shrimp consumption in Puerto Vallarta. They are usually cleaned and deveined before they arrive on our table; their five pairs of legs may be left for show but it is the muscular tail you will devour. In tomatoey sauces, dipped in butter, or smothered in diablo hot sauce, shrimp is a delicious and nutritious menu item.

    Buen provecho!

  • Puerto Vallarta: Tapatio, Whats That?

    What is a Tapatío?

Tapatío is much more than a salsa, which by the way is made and sold in the United States. Though it’s often thought to be a product of Guadalajara, it only represents this gracious city. The tagline “It’s a sauce that’s…very saucy!” is a compliment to the capital of Jalisco, the state of Puerto Vallarta. The world has received many gifts from Tapatíos and Guadalajara; they have a unique culture and their pride is well expressed in the representative song with lyrics that proclaim the soul of the provincial clean smell of a morning rose; the beautiful doves, a symbol of peace; the sweet smell of the earth; the mariachi, pottery and wonderful marketplaces. The song Guadalajara expresses a Tapatío’s love for his home. Tapatías, women from Guadalajara are known for their ojos tapatíos, large, bright and sparking, dark brown eyes, though we have met many Tapatas with blue eyes, as well as blond hair. A person doesn’t earn the name Tapatío by living in the city; one must have been born there, though many Jalscienses try to claim the moniker.

It’s not unusual to find Tapatíos living in Puerto Vallarta and many have vacation homes here; it’s a quick drive that gets shorter all the time, with improvements to highways and bridges. When we first moved to Puerto Vallarta, a trip to GDL could take as long as seven or eight hours!

Guadalajara is the second largest city in Mexico and a great introduction to the liveliness of a huge metropolitan city… a good first experience before a trip from Puerto Vallarta to Mexico City. Guadalajara is an amalgamation of three separate areas, Zapopan, Tlaquepaque, and Guadalajara proper, and each is very distinctive with its own peculiarities and personality. They complement and blend against one another well. Aside from the traffic circles, it’s a relative easy city to get around when driving one’s own vehicle, though we have found extreme ease in the application of public transportation, with taxis and Uber even cheaper than Puerto Vallarta and none of the battles between the two that recently affected Puerto Vallarta.

The cuisine of Guadalajara is world renown and chefs are very competitive in their ingenuity and creativeness. Plan to have a few good Tapatío meals during your stay and make sure to hit the Chapultepec zone.

Mariachi Plaza is a must and you will find the real spirit of Tapatíos here. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon and we have booked groups for parties who are more than willing to make the distance to Puerto Vallarta for a fiesta. Not to be missed are the tonier neighborhoods of Tlaquepaque and Zapopan (the Beverly Hills of Guadalajara) and the amazing shopping district of Tonalá, where a flea market goes on and on. We have purchased many fabulous pieces of art here at shockingly low prices. The nightlife is also great, with nightclubs for all tastes and world-class music.

  • Donna Davies: Pursuing Your Dream

I dreamed of living in Mexico since I was 17 years old.  My friends knew this about me but they all thought I was crazy and that it would never happen.

Each time I visited Mexico I felt a certain connection, something pulling me here.  What’s not to love here, the location the ocean, the beaches, the mountains, it’s paradise on earth, but the real reason is the Mexican people and their culture, if I had not fallen in love with the people, well, I would be someplace else.

After my last “Vacation Visit” in 2002 I felt, this is it, I’m going to do it, I am going to purse my dream.  I returned to Los Angeles, back to work, but I did not let the daily grind take over and get the best of me.

This was my opportunity and my time to make it all come true!

It was a bit scary moving to Mexico by myself.  But I definitely knew I wanted a more rewarding life.  I wanted something special and be where I would meet new people and do new things.

The first new thing in my new life was starting a career in Real Estate.  I knew it was what I was going to do before coming here.  It has been a very rewarding career.  Originally when I started working in Real Estate in Puerto Vallarta it was a sellers market and prices were much higher, similar to a lot of places in the U.S.  But after the economic downturn it has become a buyers market.  The buyers today are educated and more hesitant to fall immediately in love with a place and pay any price for it.  Buyers want to know everything the market has to offer them in their price range and take a good look at what properties have the best value.  If it makes financial sense for them then they are taking advantage of the great opportunities now available.

There are lots of great things about being a Puerto Vallarta Real Estate agent; such as meeting new people that have the same dream as I did in moving to Mexico.

Buyers might be starting out just looking online, wanting to know certain things about Puerto Vallarta, such as schools for their children, what is there to do, how will they meet new people, starting a business, how do they become involved in the community and where are the best places to eat!  They are also viewing different properties and trying to get some idea or a feel of what kind of property they’re looking for and what location they want to be in and what price they want to pay.  It’s a fantastic feeling and I enjoy being part of that experience with my clients.   My expertise and knowledge of the area and the market enables me to help them pursue their dream and make it come true!

I also enjoy helping sellers.  I help owners get their home market ready and my connection with the community is an added plus with the services needed for closing.  My priority is to get the seller a strong market sales price and assure a smooth and timely closing.

My favorite Puerto Vallarta areas for a great real estate investments are; the South Shore, Conchas Chinas, Amapas, Old Town, El Centro, 5 de Diciembre and La Pechuga, Hotel Zone and Marina Vallarta.  There are lots of great areas but these are my favorite locations for condos and homes, and all of them with views of Banderas Bay.

My advice to anyone interested in purchasing real estate in Puerto Vallarta is, get yourself in front of an AMPI Approved Agent that is experienced and has knowledge of the market and will be your go to person your advocate and someone who is looking out for your best interest.

  • Vallarta Inspired Living News: Pancho Villa

    Pancho Villa

It’s fun to dress up as Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata for Halloween, Mexican Revolution celebrations in Mexico, and Cinco de Mayo in the US (they don’t actually celebrate this day in Mexico). If those donning costumes knew more about Pancho Villa, who was frequently referred to as the Centaur of the North, they may change their minds. Whereas Zapata’s army was more likely to be known as caballeros (gentlemen), Villa’s troops had a bloodthirsty, brutal side. During the revolution in Chihuahua, sixty female soldiers (soldaderas) were captured and one of them, still in possession of her pistol, tried to shoot Pancho Villa. The indignant Villa marched through the group of women inquiring which lady had fired the shot. No one would speak, all in defense of the others. Villa had them tied up “like stacks of firewood or barrels,” and dousing them with kerosene, lit the group on fire. The soldaderas did not beg for mercy. Instead they screamed in rage at the maniac who would go to such lengths to defend his male ego.

Villa, who changed his name from José Doroteo Arango Arámbula to Francisco Pancho Villa, was the commander of the Mexican army in the northern reaches of Mexico, while Emiliano Zapata, leading his Zapatistas, was the in charge of the south. They were very different leaders in many ways.

Little is known about Villa in his younger days but he liked to claim his true father was a well known bandit, Agustin Villa, rather than the wealthy landowner who raised him, Agustin Arango. Villa was not a great scholar and didn’t waste time in school, lending his hand to his mother on their vast ranch after Agustin Arango died. Before becoming a revolutionary, Villa worked as a sharecropper, arriero (muleskinner), bricklayer and even as a foreman for the US railway. Led to a more adventurous life as a bandit, it was a natural ascendance to soldier, leader and commander of the Mexican army, a level he achieved due to his willingness to take chances others avoided.

Pancho Villa lost his final battles of the revolution. He turned to the not so lofty occupation of a mercenary, attacking a small US/Mexico border town, which turned into the Battle of Columbus in 1916. Villa consistently evaded capture by US Army General John Pershing, until Pershing was called back to Washington DC at the outbreak of World War l.

Pancho Villa was recruited to star as himself in Hollywood movies, and his popularity grew with corridas (ballads), the type of which we still hear to this day, aggrandizing cartel criminals as heroes and celebrities. In the end, after once barely escaping execution by firing squad and being pardoned by President Madero, Villa tried to involve himself once again in Mexican politics. He was assassinated in 1923, allegedly by order of the less tolerant President Obregón.
