A Surprising House
Imagine a home in a remote yet easily accessible location on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Contemporary and minimalist with extraordinary views of ocean, sitting above a 20 kilometer stretch of beach on six acres of land called Chachalaka.
South of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on the Costalegre coast is an area of pristine, virgin beaches. It is a place that surprises. It is unexpected. Designer John Van Dyke set out to create a home that was equally as unexpected. The property features a main home, Casa J, with two suites plus den, and a second home, Casa Arbolito. Arbolito is perfect for guests or staff. Both homes feature thoughtfully curated finishes and decor.
Casa J is influenced by mid-century architectural modernists, such as Wright, Barragan, and Nuetra. It is open in its design and incorporates the setting and views seamlessly. The house is as visually interesting as the setting without distracting attention from the ocean, beach, and landscape. The architecture and colors compliment the surroundings in all of the seasons.
This is truly a place where time lies lightly on the land. It is a place of sunrises and sunsets, walks on the beach, and impossibly starry night skies.
The homes at Chachalaka have been design for low impact to the environment. Hot water is from a thermal solar system. Rainwater is captured and used. Water comes from a well and water system on the property. Grey water is recycled and used for landscape. A leading technology, multigate micro inverter solar system, ties the property to the power grid. More power is generated than is used. In addition, the design considers thermal mass, and natural air convection.
This is a magical region waiting to be discovered. The area is known as Costalegre, which means ‘the joyful coast’ and it is indeed that. You will have a smile on your face when you see this exquisite beach and beautiful landscape. There is a diversity of flora and fauna that ranges from tropical to dry and arid. Birds of many varieties populate the coast, and some are unique to only this area of Mexico. Marine life is abundant and the area is also home to nesting sea turtles that return annually to lay their eggs on the beaches.
Chachalaka is a place that was designed to enchant, a place you won’t want to leave, a place to restore energy and creativity.
